ADHD’ers are often creative thinkers… and research is linking ADHD to greater Divergent Thinking among other creative skills✨ In general, thinking is broadly divided into two types: Convergent Thinking (factually and logically based) and Divergent Thinking (imaginative and possibility based)✨ All of us fall somewhere along the continuum between Convergent and Divergent - and knowing what is our style of thinking, helps us maximize it as a strength✨ It also helps us understand when tasks are requiring one way of thinking that is in contrast to our own style of thinking - we can learn how to merge the expectations with our style for a smoother outcome✨ Studies have suggested that ADHD’ers may possess certain cognitive and neuro-biological traits that contribute to heightened creativity✨ More specifically, research shows that ADHD’ers might demonstrate greater “Divergent Thinking”, which basically means that when posed with a question or a problem, divergent thinkers are better able to generate a wider range of imaginative solutions or ideas✨ Do you find this to be your experience of ADHD - either for yourself or your child? And if so, how does it play out at work or at school? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The neuro-biology of ADHD and Divergent Thinking is fascinating - and I’ll review that in my next post! Have a read through the visuals —> more details to come! ~~~~~~~~ #adhdawareness #adhdcreativity #adhdstrengths #adhdparenting #adhdparents #adhdsupport #adhdkids #tdah #tdahinfantil

I believe you when you tell me you've tried everything to help your child. Most of the parents I've worked with have been working tirelessly to find SOMETHING, anything that will help their child's challenging behaviors calm down, even just a little. Some traditional approaches worked, but then didn't. Some were disastrous and made the behavioral symptoms worse. Many have been told by multiple providers, "there's nothing I can do to help you. I've tried everything." I am sorry if this has been your experience. I know you are doing everything you can think of to help your child. And also, if you have not had anyone tell you about your child's unique brain, how it works, and how this is tied directly to the challenging behaviors you're managing each day, I want to encourage you to walk down this path with me to learn this and more. There is more hope for us than anyone ever leads us to believe. Ready to begin learning how to parent from a brain first lens? 🧠💬 Understanding Anxiety Triggers in ADHD 💬🧠 For many with ADHD, anxiety is a common companion. Recognizing what triggers anxiety can be a big step in managing it effectively. 5. Routine Changes: Unexpected changes in daily routine or last-minute plans can cause anxiety due to the preference for predictable patterns and structured environments. 6. Decision Making: Having to make decisions, especially under pressure, can be particularly challenging and anxiety-inducing for those with ADHD. Understanding these triggers is crucial for developing coping strategies and seeking appropriate support. Let’s keep the conversation going to foster a supportive community for those dealing with ADHD and anxiety! 🌟 Do you have any triggers that you would like to share? We are all unique individuals in this world where no two people are alike. We are all perfectly imperfect who think, feel and behave differently. Having ADHD means that some parts of our brain function differently which can lead to poor choices or behaviours. When we understand how to improve our brain function, we can improve our lives. I know because I have changed the way I think, feel and behave by making adjustments to my life in a smart and healthier way. I am focussed, I am motivated and I can concentrate without using any meds in a calm and relaxed way. It's time for a Reset! It's time for a new type of therapy and lifestyle. The issue with ADHD is not no focus at all...it is a struggle with directing focus and attention to where it needs to be, while tuning out everything else. People with ADHD are paying attention to EVERYTHING at the same time...they want to do everything at once, and are seeing and hearing everything...this makes it hard to get anything done as they can't get themselves to shift their attention where they need it... #adhd #adhdlife #adhdkids #adhdparents #adhdproblems

Advocacy is important for our children within the school system. Often our children cannot speak up for themselves and explain that they find school work really intolerable boring! (It's because of their brain, not a choice). It's up to you and me as parents, to explain to our child's teacher what's going on so that your teacher can find way of engaging with her. ADHD’ers: there is amazing research being done looking into the positive benefits of nature and the outdoors🌲 In particular in the areas of attention and working memory 🌴 If you have access to forests, gardens or parks, it would be worth purposefully building in a few “green brain breaks” into your child’s day 🌿🍃🌱 (and yours as well!) … reference for this study for those who are interested: Mason, L., Ronconi, A., Scrimin, S. et al. Yesterday, I shared a photo of me in high school. It got me thinking about time and deadlines. (If you missed it, you should check it out. 🤣) One of many things my clients have in common is that their brains often struggle with time - time management and time awareness. Time management is the ability to: ✨ estimate how much time is available, ✨ how to use it and ✨ how to stay within time limits and deadlines. And time awareness (the awareness of the passing of time) is a huge part of time management. For a brain that struggles with time awareness, one simple way to enhance this skill is to collect some data. How good is your brain at estimating time? How long will that chore take? How long will this project take? How long does it take you to walk the dog or walk to the bus stop? My recommendation? Time it and write it down! Better yet, before you time it, write down your estimate. How long do you THINK it will take? And then, actually time it. Once you collect some data, you can make a better, more realistic plan! 5/15/2024, 12:57:59 AM

This is one of the most controversial quotes I forever hear. ⁣ ⁣ This may have an effect on SEN children but not all of them. ⁣ Archie has to have his game in moderation not to do with screen time more so for the fact he gets so emotionally involved in the game he can’t seem to switch off when his time is finished. ⁣ ⁣ However he’s fine with his iPad/ film in bed. ⁣ This helps him regulate himself and not focus on the fact that he’s actually in bed and it’s time for bed, sometimes when watching a film it will make him fall asleep (it’s never an exciting film or one he hasn’t watched before because then that is a different story) ⁣ ⁣ I sit strongly on the fence with this because I feel every child uses screens for different reasons. ⁣ So whilst I’m not suggesting everyone should try this, I would also suggest to give a try. ⁣ ⁣ So many professionals have told me in the past how bad it is for ASD & ADHD children to have screen time, many have said to avoid whilst on melatonin but I honestly feel it’s each to their own. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ So if your new to the SEN journey and this is already working for you and others advise you against it, just keep doing what works for you, your child and your household because it’s not anyone else getting your child settled and asleep it’s you 🩵 ⁣. #adhd #adhdawareness #asd #autism #pda #pathalogicaldemandavoidance #adhdsupport #adhdlife #adhdparenting #adhdparents #adhdparent #adhdmom #adhdmum #adhddiagnosis #adhddad #adhdcommunity #adhdkids #adhdkid #adhdchild #adhdhelp #adhdstruggles #autistic #autismacceptance #autismmom #autismmum #autismparent #autismparents #autismparenting #pdaparenting #asdsupport

NO two people in the world are the same, just like people with ADHD ADHD is a spectrum of different thoughts, feelings and behaviours Some people present as anxious with a low mood, where the noise is in their head leading to procrastination and avoidance For others they are hyperactive and impulsive leading to risk taking and thrill seeking How can they both be labelled as ADHD??? In a society where behaviors are rarely seen as symptoms and are almost always seen as willful and intentional, it makes sense that we'd default at times to a behavioral lens that tells parents they need to be stricter parents when their child is "misbehaving". . While this is tempting when overwhelm and exhaustion sets in, I promise you it is not the path to less challenging behavioral symptoms, nor will it lead to a stronger relationship with your child. I care about you and your precious (limited) energy, so want to point you in another direction where peace and joy truly is possible. . Ready to begin learning how to parent from a brain first lens? “BE YOURSELF!” 👍😀 What in the world 🌍 does that really mean? 🤷🏻‍♀️ For today’s Dear ADHD Family Coach® Tuesday, I dive in to try to answer this question. 🤦‍♀️ Some might say it sounds more like a personal essay than an advice column. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Either way, this truly took me out of my comfort zone and yes, I almost didn’t pick this question to answer. But isn’t that the point? My answer is not perfect. It might not please everyone. Heck, it might even piss off a few people. But it is unapologetic me! 🙋🏻‍♀️ Warts and all! I know super meta! 😜😉 I hope you’ll have a read. Hear what I had to say to this lovely man who was trying to make sense of it all as it pertains to his #adhd. One thing to note, I am super sensitive to the whole, “I need to be fixed” mantra. Especially, as a coach who hears this all day long. No one needs to be fixed. 😶‍🌫️ As you’ll read you’ll see that I feel Be Yourself is less of a look and more of a feeling. This Dear ADHD Family Coach® column was originally written for @ADDitudeMag #lesliejosel #orderoochaos #orderoutofchaos #adhdawareness #adhdproblems #adhdparenting #adhdsupport #adhdlife #adhddad #adhdmen #adhdkids #adhdadult #adhdcoach #adhdcoaching #adhdexplained #adhdstruggles #adhdparents #adhdhelp #adhdparent #adhdfamily #adultadhd #beyourself #beyourselfalways #selfesteem #loveyourself #selflove #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #mentalhealthawareness

I saw this post on the BBC and it stings a bit because of the message. I had to fix the headline. I‘m 100% behind having a positive lens. Remove unnecessary barriers to support and treatment and we can do anything anyone else can do (within reason***). The problem is this narrative that we have special powers and if you were just a bit better at having ADHD, you would be able to do all sorts of good stuff. You can‘t even do ADHD right you massive loser. The real troubler is the implication that our disorder is just a matter of willpower. The quote in this article is that instead of getting bored easily "I push through that”. Well. I can’t push through it. Because it’s a neurological disorder of exactly that problem. Ironically, focussing on the handful of people with ADHD who seem to have no trouble turning their brain into an ADHD superpower, takes away from how many of us experience ADHD. This sort of thing has a really powerful effect on the vast majority of us who can‘t choose what we hyperfocus on. If your ADHD is a creative superpower. If you can focus on something you want to do for hours every day or “push through“ your ADHD. I‘m not sure we have the same challenges. I can‘t do those things. ***I can't be an ADHD-treated commercial airline pilot for example. It's illegal. #adhd  #adhdawareness  #adhdproblems  #adhdlife  #adhdparenting  #adultadhd  #adhdsupport  #adhdbrain  #adhdisreal  #adhdwomen  #adhdprobs  #adhdmemes  #adhdentertainment  #adhduk  #adhdtips  #adhdcoach  #adhdawarenessmonth  #adhdadult  #adhdparents  #adhdstruggles  #adhdexplained  #adhdchild  #adhdfamily  #adhdsolutions  #adhdparent  #adhdcoaching  #adhdinspiration  #adhddad  #adhdhe

Simplicity is a biological need of an ADHD brain✨ Yet there is absolutely NO simplicity in an ADHD brain✨ So what can we do? This post reviews some environmental and cognitive strategies that can help reduce the overwhelm that comes from having a “dysregulated” (aka super dynamic) outer and inner world✨ Soooo many thoughts, a messy room or desk, too many choices, forgetting strategies in the moment...✨all play a role in overloading the executive functions in our prefrontal cortex! We will often need external help to set up an environment that offers us simplicity✨which in turn, can help reduce the executive function overload And we’ll need support in keeping our environment in a state of “simplicity”, but when we are able to keep coming back to simplifying —> it is a calming neurological experience✨ I often travel for work, and I notice that I am way calmer when I’m not around my cluttered home... I wear more interesting outfits because I’ve reduced the amount of clothes I have to choose from✨ With less “stuff”, I have less visual reminders of “things I need to clean, or fix, or sort”… and more cognitive room to think, create and relax✨ The best (and only) way I can accomplish any sort of simplicity in my environment, is to have another person with me to help the process along. Sometimes just having ONE spot in your home with reduced visual clutter/simplicity, can really help. What are your strategies to bring simplicity into your life? Or what are your challenges in bringing some form of simplicity into your day? ⬇️ I’m still a work in progress in this area and I suspect I always will be, but I love knowing that I can calm my brain by getting help to simplify my surroundings when needed✨ Food for thought!! Have a great day everyone! ✨✨✨✨✨ #simplicity #adhdclutter #adhdawareness #adhdbrain #adhdwomen #adhd #adhdtips #adhdsupport #adhdparenting #adhdparents #adhdkids #adhdchild #adhdchildren #parentingadhd #adhdunderstood #adhdlife

There are so many fears that prevent us from living our life to the fullest such as: The fear of the unknown The fear of not being in control The fear of being judged The fear of failure The fear of not being good enough The fear of being rejected These fears can create a coping strategy called PROCRASTINATION !!! An avoidance strategy to prevent a possible negative outcome No one has to live with any of these fears. 'It all goes on in the mind!' When most of the time these thoughts are not even real! Link en mi bio ⬇😉 #coachparatdah #deficitdeatencionehiperctividad #adhd #adhdparents #psicoeducacionentdah #capacitacionentdah #impulsividad #hiperactividad #inatencion #padrestdah #familiascontdah #tributdah #expertaentdah #niñostdah #tdahyautoestima #comunidadmamastdah #grupodeapoyotdah #niñoscontdah #adolescentescontdah

It can be one of the HARDEST things to do, but staying calm when our kids are being difficult or are very activated is so important. They feed off our energy...our calm will help bring their calm, while our escalation will only make things worse. Staying calm shows them that we are in control and gives them space to feel all their feelings and come back down. I know it's tough but it is so worth practicing. What helps you stay calm? #positiveparenting #parentinghacks #parentingtips #momlife #adhdkids #adhdparents

Enabling your child vs Supporting your child It can be tough to determine the difference when you feel you're doing too much for your child as they get older. Should I be "making" him pack his own bag for school? Should I be "making" her hang up her towel every night? It's down to what's the biggest priority. If your priority is getting your child to school on time, then letting go of the expectation of an independently packed school bag might achieve that. A fight every morning will not support that goal. It's about mindfully thinking about what the priority and having a plan to support that need. Sunlight and ADHD✨ Thought I’d repost this from 5 months ago as it bears repeating! ✨Sunlight (especially early morning sunlight) can increase your natural dopamine supplies in 2 ways: 1. As the skin turns sunlight into Vitamin D, it also triggers more dopamine production ✨ 2. As specialized cells in the retina (which affects the size of pupil dilation) are activated in bright light, other cells connected to these retinal cells trigger more dopamine production✨ AND… there seems to be a cumulative effect if you are exposed to sunlight on consecutive days✨ So, get out first thing in the morning for 20 minutes of sunlight to start your day (and your child’s day)☀️if you can! Try walking to school with your kids, or eating breakfast outside, or sitting outside and planning your day…. [other ideas welcomed!!] If sunlight isn’t readily available - supplementation with Vitamin D3 can also help in the production of Dopamine ✨ Also, if sunlight isn’t available during the dark winter days, look into light therapy devices that are made for SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), as they will trigger similar pupil and skin interactional precursors to dopamine✨ Note: The darker your skin, the more sunlight you will need! ⬇️ “Vitamin D synthesis is highly dependent on the concentration of melanin in the skin as melanin absorbs and scatters UVR-B, resulting in a less efficient conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol to previtamin D3. Therefore, dark-skinned individuals will experience slower vitamin D synthesis than light-skinned ones” [reference below] Have a great day everyone! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bonilla C, Ness AR, Wills AK, Lawlor DA, Lewis SJ, Davey Smith G. Skin pigmentation, sun exposure and vitamin D levels in children of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. BMC Public Health. 2014 Jun 12;14:597. doi: 10.1186/1471-2458-14-597. This weekend has been stunning. How are you feeling? If you’re feeling out of sorts. A but weird. Like you don’t really know who you are with your ADHD then go into nature. It’s what I do. "Non-compliance" in a child or teen is a big trigger for many parents...understandably so. And, in kids/teens with brain-based differences, it's a fairly common challenging behavior. Why is that? Because it requires cognitive skills that these kids struggle with. It is a brain thing.
