DO YOU NEED TO FIDGET TO FOCUS? 🤔 If you answered yes then you are not alone! Experts believe that engaging in an activity that uses a sense other than what’s required for your primary task — called “Secondary Focusing” — can enhance focus and improve performance. 🤩😀 Doodling ✏️ , beading bracelets, manipulating legos, even balancing on a yoga ball are all mindless “fidgets” or activities you can do while working on the primary task. For fidgeting to be effective it needs to be deliberate. Intentional fidgeting doesn’t distract you from the primary task and allows you to clear your brain 🧠 so you can focus on the primary task at hand. So the next time you are trying to fight the urge to fidget; stand up 🚶🏻♂️, move around, 🏃🏼 even chew gum 😛! Experiment with a variety of strategies unit you find the one that works for you. This mirror is hanging out in the gap where the old medicine cabinet was… and it’s cracking me up. We (by this I mean he) will patch the drywall hole, then I will patch the paint - sort of. And then we (him again) will cut the mirror from a beside-the-road-find for the old frame I found at an auction years ago. I have already painted the frame. Then he (I have given up) will hang the mirror and it will be lovely. But for now, this tiny little imposter has the spot and does the job and it works so I shouldn’t complain. We all know this is not the thang that was designed for that spot!! We all know that it wont be this way forever. We can FEEL the amusing not-rightness of it. And Mama’s mental health is getting a little thin with the mess in the house. #sayalittleprayerforme And patching this kind of fun-the-first-time painting isn’t all that fun. So maybe next time I will wait for the drywall to be done before I pitch the paint. Or maybe not. Right now I am thinking about creating a support group for us folks who are living with the anti-perfect house. So I post this for your amusement but also as a reminder that what IS… is TEMPORARY. And what is coming… is soooo much better. Cause Girl - God is in the renovation business!! Can I get an amen?! And don’t pray for me for patience if you love me, that would just be mean. Seriously, stop it right now. I thought you loved me. #sigh This is the little bathroom makeover that is supposed to hold us over until the actual take-it-down-to-the-studs bathroom renovation. Building a roadmap that honors their strengths and needs will give them the tools and resources to maximize and strengthen his homework muscle. 💪🏻 Something I do for ALL of my students... I create a Personal Homework Profile for them. 🤔 A Personal Homework Profile takes the whole student into account. It aims to identify each student’s strengths and needs, then throw in a little fun, energy and creativity to help them get started. Here are a few questions to get you and your student started: What time is best for you to start homework? Do you prefer a noisy or calm environment to get your homework done? What type of snacks do you need to have beside you? Do you need music to keep on task or do you prefer quiet? Can you work fast and furious or do you need constant breaks to accomplish your work? PREEMPT THE WHY! Don't leave what you say open for interpretation! Even better, preempt the why by ⬇️ Here's an example. Instead of saying: "Can you come downstairs?" which is vague, open-ended, and can lead to debate. BE SPECIFIC! Try this instead: "Please come downstairs for 10 minutes so we can go over Saturday's game" When you answer before they ask, "why" WITH specifics they will know what is needed AND how long the task will take them #timechallenge! DO YOU NEED TO FIDGET TO FOCUS? 🤔 If you answered yes then you are not alone! Experts believe that engaging in an activity that uses a sense other than what’s required for your primary task — called “Secondary Focusing” — can enhance focus and improve performance. 🤩😀 Doodling ✏️ , beading bracelets, manipulating legos, and even balancing on a yoga ball are all mindless “fidgets” or activities you can do while working on the primary task. For fidgeting to be effective it needs to be deliberate. Intentional fidgeting doesn’t distract you from the primary task and allows you to clear your brain 🧠 so you can focus on the primary task at hand. So the next time you are trying to fight the urge to fidget; stand up 🚶🏻♂️, move around, 🏃🏼 even chew gum 😛! Experiment with a variety of strategies unit you find the one that works for you. Selective Hearing? Not quite. Your child heard what you told them. BUT they didn't remember what you told them. Maybe you told them too many things at once. 😣 Maybe you told them too long ago. 😳 Maybe you told them when they were distracted 🎮 📝 BUT One change can make all the difference! Any instructions or requests should be given in bite-sized pieces. If you’re giving your child multi-step directions or instructions, give them one at a time so they have a chance to process each one. And want to really help them with their #WorkingMemory. Have them repeat it.... BACKWARDS. I learned this method from a middle school teacher! She explained that when she wants her students to truly solidify the information she has taught, she has them repeat it to her backwards. Her reasoning? That the brain has to work harder to recall information when it remembers backwards, so it’s more likely to stick.
