On this day in 2009, Captain Richard Phillips who Somali Pirates abducted is rescued. Phillips was captain of the Maersk Alabama when four Somali Pirates boarded it. The crew of 20 sank the Pirate's speed boat by repeatedly swinging the rudder of the Maersk Alabama and swamping the small boat. The crew members locked themselves in the engine room while the pirates boarded. The crew lured one of the pirates into the room and held him for 12 hours. The crew tried to exchange the captured Pirate for Phillips, but the remaining pirates grabbed the ship's rescue boat with the captive Phillips. The Pirates accepted the exchange, and received the captured Pirate, but did not return Phillips in exchange. On April 9, a standoff began between the USS Bainbridge and the pirates in the Maersk Alabama lifeboat, where they continued to hold Phillips hostage. In fairness, I’m just taking the piss, because most of the time, his movies are more often than not, impressive and well made. United 93, 22 July, The Bourne films, and Bloody Sunday just to name a few. When I originally watched Captain Phillips back in 2013, I thought it was a really solid work. I probably would have rated it higher than I did now. I think because I had quite a good memory of what happens in the story, and how it all plays out. On a repeated viewing, it doesn’t hit as hard or even as emotionally. Outside of Tom Hanks getting rescued at the end, which I think was the best part of his performance. I will say that the tension throughout is what keeps this movie going. From the first signs of the pirates encroaching on the vessel is intense. I also think a lot of what happens between the pirates and the crew onboard is the best part of Captain Phillips. I will say that once they get Tom Hanks onto the life boat, the pace sort of ceased. It doesn’t really pick up until the final minutes when the Navy steps in and kills the pirates. When a cargo freighter passes just outside Somalian waters, some men in a motorboat approach the freighter and start shooting at it. The Captain, Richard Phillips deduces they're pirates so he tries to keep them off the ship but fails. They come on board so Phillips instructs the crew to hide. The pirates go to the bridge and tell Phillips they want money and when Phillips offers what they have which is about $30,000, the leader has his mind set on getting millions. He plans to take the crew hostage and hold them for ransom. But since they are hiding he goes off to find them. Eventually the crew captures the leader. His companions who have Phillips, demand they be allowed to go in the lifeboat. They let them but they keep Phillips.
