El castillo de Eilean Donan es una fortaleza situada sobre la pequeña isla del mismo nombre que se alza a un lado del lago Duich, al noroeste de Escocia (En gaélico significa ¨Isla roja por el color de las algas que quedan al descubierto durante la marea baja) En 1719 fue ocupado por una expedición española que tenía como objetivo levantar militarmente a los escoceses contra la corona inglesa. Tras un mes de ocupación, tres fragatas inglesas penetraron en el lago Alsh y desde allí bombardearon masivamente la fortaleza hasta que las tropas españolas se rindieron y fueron hechas prisioneras. El castillo de Eilean Donan quedó entonces abandonado en estado de ruina hasta que John MacRae-Gilstrap lo restauró entre 1912 y 1932. Hoy sigue siendo la residencia oficial del Clan MacRae. El castillo actual comenzó a construirse en 1220 por orden de Alejandro II de Escocia sobre las ruinas de un antiguo fuerte usado por los pictos, como defensa frente a las incursiones vikingas. After leaving the Isle of Skye we visited the Eilean Donan Castle. Situated on an island where three lochs meet, it was first inhabited around the 6th century. Eilean Donan Castle fortification was built in the 13th century. Originally built to protect the land from the Viking invaders who raided and settled in much of North Scotland and the Western Isles. From here we headed south for Fort William, with a couple of stops to see some iconic sights. First one being the Glenfinnan Viaduct. The iconic viaduct has a 1000ft span and is 100ft above ground. Known for scenes in Harry Potter where Hogwarts Express is travelling along it. Construction on the viaduct started in 1897 and was opened in 1901. It is the longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland.🤓 From here we then decided to visit the Corpach shipwreck. Built in 1975 as a fishing vessel, there is very little information on how the boat ended up washed up on the shore in 2011. Some say it was the sailors onboard distracted by Ben Nevis during stormy waters… We ended our day at the Glen Nevis camping and caravan park.
