In 563, a monastery was founded on the Island of Iona by the monk Columba, who had been exiled from his home in County Donegal. Iona lay within the Kingdom of Dal Riata, a Gaelic kingdom whose territory extended from Ulster all the way up the west coast of what is now Scotland. Iona grew to become one of the most important Christian centres in the British Isles, playing a pivotal role in converting the Gaels, Picts and Northumbrians of Northern Britain to Christianity. It set up a network of monasteries throughout Britain and Ireland including Lindisfarne on Holy Island, founded by St Aidan in 634 at the request of King Oswald. It's funny listening to the ongoing debates about manipulation in landscape photography 😂 As I've often explained in my captions, every photographic image is merely a representation not an accurate depiction of reality. Every photographer has their own opinion on how much manipulation is acceptable. A popular opinion doing the rounds is that photo manipulation is okay as long as the artist discloses that he did. This is sanctimonious trite and laughable! 🤣 Instagram won't allow captions that long. 📜 Besides it would make very boring reading if one tried 🥱 Am I being dishonest if i fail to disclose that I took today's photo with a focal length of 30mm because that is less real than if it was 400mm? Would it be deceptive unless I disclose that I captured it with a full-frame camera, not a crop-sensor one? That in post processing, I pulled down the highlights and raised the shadows, among a hundred other adjustments? Or would it be more honest if I let a preset algorithm designed by some unnamed employee at Canon edit the RAW file and convert it to a jpg file? You see?! Where does it end? Do we insist landscape painters disclose if they used palette knives or brushes? If they painted with oils, acrylics, or watercolours? If they removed an object from a scene? Or added one in? Travelling by train to go on holiday may not seem like the easiest option. Trains don’t go everywhere up here in Scotland! But there are some excellent routes that are easy for families and have lots of great things to do. We chose to visit Pitlochry by train, staying at the excellent Pitlochry Hostel, run by @hostellingscotland . It’s less than a 10 minute walk from the station, so excellent for those arriving by train. And has great facilities for families. The family rooms consist of bunk beds, we had 2 bunk beds and an en-suite shower/toilet room. Under 18’s must have private rooms, they can’t be in the shared dorms. So you always have a room to yourself with kids. Downstairs are 2 living areas, so you can sit and read, chat and play games together. On one wet afternoon we came back early to dry off and just relax in the living area playing games and reading. There’s also a large dining room beside the well equipped kitchen. In hostels you can cook your own food and eat it in the dining room. Just make sure you label the bags holding your food, so nobody takes it and they can throw it out if you accidentally leave it! Obviously you need to wash your own dishes too. Or if you have kids they can do it for you! 🙈 We had booked the ‘wee breakfast’, which is a continental breakfast with a large range of items. It makes it easier than bringing more food stuff with us! At Pitlochry hostel they have a separate breakfast room for those having the wee breakfast. Right by the garden where you can watch the birds feeding. Hostels are a lot easier for budget travelling with kids. Definitely a great way to explore Scotland, with plenty of room to relax and make your own food. Have you been Hostelling before? Bonus points if it was in Scotland! AD
If you find yourself at the end of the road in Rodel, on the southern tip of the Isle of Harris, take the time to look at the stonework near the gate of St Clement’s church. • The local story goes that the stonemason placed the heart in the wall in honour of the woman from Harris who he fell in love with. But the woman would not move to back to the Isle of Lewis with him. How fitting that this heart is broken. • The other local story is that a man put the stone into the wall because he was a stonemason and he needed to build a wall.
