Earlier in the year, I enjoyed learning how to harvest and prepare young nopal leaves from the cactus on our property. My favorite was the sliced, roasted leaves, using them in chili and gumbo. Now, it’s prickly pear season. Those beautifully colored fruit of the same cacti, often referred to as tuna, are now gaining the attention of the local deer population. Fortunately, I have been able to scavenge a few to start a prickly pear liqueur, along with a few Meyer lemons. Cleaning the fruit does require rubber gloves due to the presence of tiny spines known as glochids, even in the spineless variety of cacti. Intense color is a clue to nutrient density of fruits and vegetables, and prickly pear is no exception. The fruit can also be used fresh in juices, as a tincture, or dried to use in teas. High in B vitamins, C, polyphenols, antioxidants, and other nutrients that support the immune system, healthy blood sugar and inflammation balance, fiber, and minerals. I’ve also seen information on the juice being used as a hangover remedy, which would explain the benefit of liver support. It’s actually a fruit, go figure, although one would think it was a vegetable. (I only have good things to say.) It’s super low in calories, so you can eat a lot of it. In one of my stories you voted that you would like to learn more about skincare ingredients and some cactuses grows a very special fruit called "prickly pear' it looks a bit like a green/purple pear with tornes on and it is difficult to harvest. The prickly pear is filled with seeds that can be pressed to produce a very precious oil. Each seed contains only 5% of oil, so the production of 1-liter prickly pear seed oil takes about one ton of fruits to extract 25 kg of seeds (1 million prickly pear seeds). The oil contains 150% more vitamin E than Argan oil and 60 % Linoleic Acid which makes it absorb easily into the skin.
