I wanted to see The Defiant Ones for so long it feels good to have finally seen it! The Defiant Ones has an entertaining story and uses it to study the important subject of race. Bringing the story to life, and helping to make the film as good and effective as it is, are the wonderful Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis. I was a fan of both actors before watching this film but I am an even bigger one now! At 16, he moved to New York City looking to become an actor. His most prominent movies include 1958’s The Defiant Ones (Pluto TV), 1959’s Porgy and Bess (Amazon Prime Video), 1961’s A Raisin in the Sun (Peacock), 1961’s Paris Blues (Pluto TV), 1963’s Lillies of the Field (Amazon Prime Video), 1965’s A Patch of Blue (YouTube), 1967’s To Sir with Love (YouTube), 1967’s In the Heat of the Night (Pluto TV), and 1967’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (Apple TV). Poitier became the first black man to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1963’s Lillies of the Field. He won an Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievement in 2001. Fils de Reginald James Poitier, un planteur de tomates et d'Evelyn Outten, Sidney Poitier naît lors d'un voyage de sa mère à Miami en Floride, dans le quartier de Coconut Grove. Citoyen américain de ce fait, il grandit aux Bahamas dans le village de ses parents, sur l'île Cat mais, afin de prévenir une tendance croissante à la délinquance, son père l'envoie à 15 ans rejoindre son frère à Miami. À 16 ans, Sidney Poitier quitte le sud pour s'installer à New York où il exerce différents métiers. Alors membre de la troupe de l'American Negro Theater, il est repéré par un directeur de casting durant une répétition et décroche un petit rôle dans une production de "Lysistrata" à Broadway, s'attirant de bonnes critiques. À la fin de l'année 1949, il se voit offrir un rôle dans "No Way Out" de Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Nommé pour l'Oscar du meilleur acteur en 1958 pour le film "The Defiant Ones", il remporte cette récompense en 1964 pour "Lilies of the Field". Il devient ainsi le premier acteur noir à remporter ce prix. Obra maestra cuyo disparatado diálogo final pone el broche de oro a una de las mejores comedias corrosivas de la historia del #Cine. La primera colaboración del tándem formado por Billy Wilder y Jack Lemmon fue esta parodia maravillosa del cine de gánsteres. En «Con faldas y a lo loco» cada escena es mejor que la anterior. Un clásico lleno de ingenio y humor. Su interpretación de Jerry (Gerald)/Daphne le valió a Jack Lemmon su primera nominación al #PremioÓscar al mejor actor. #UnitedArtists quería que #BobHope, #DannyKaye y #MitziGaynor protagonizaran la película, pero Billy Wilder lo rechazó de pleno porque quería a #FrankSinatra. Billy Wilder quedó a comer con él para que se uniera al proyecto. Sinatra nunca apareció y el director abandonó la idea de contar con el cantante debido a su informalidad. Al final el cineasta estadounidense de origen austríaco contrató a #TonyCurtis, que venía de estrenar #Fugitivos ( #TheDefiantOnes, 1958), de #StanleyKramer, la odisea de dos fugitivos encadenados y condenados a huir juntos. Ambos desean lo mismo, alcanzar la libertad, pero aun así las tensiones raciales no tardarán en enfrentarlos. Más tarde entró en escena Jack Lemmon, aunque Billy Wilder jugaba con las cartas marcadas: en febrero de ese mimo año se había acercado a la mesa que ocupaba el actor, que ya había ganado un Óscar al mejor actor de reparto por #EscalaEnHawái ( #MisterRoberts, 1955), de #JohnFord, en el restaurante Domick’s, y le contó de qué iba la película: «Son dos hombres que huyen de unos gánsteres porque corren peligro sus vidas, se disfrazan de mujer y se unen a una orquesta femenina«. Con una premisa así ¿qué actor se resistiría a aceptar un papel? Por esa razón, y cuando la opción Sinatra había sido abandonada, Lemmon sería el compañero de Curtis en la nueva película de Wilder.

Just easing the tension.”-Damn this one truly hit hard, as I grew up watching the ‘Rocky’ films, ‘Happy Gilmore’ and ‘Predator’. The iconic Carl Weathers has sadly passed away at the age of 76, with his family stating he passed away peacefully in his sleep. As mentioned, he’s somebody who has been part of my life for pretty much the the entire time through his work. He was such a charismatic performance with undeniable screen presence. It’s why Apollo was so easy to like despite being the “villain” and why they just had make him friends with Rocky. His hand shake with Arnold in ‘Predator’ is so iconic, and I mean his scenes with Sandler in ‘Happy Gilmore’ were so much fun. There’s other excellent roles of his such as his work in ‘Action Jackson’ and ‘The Mandalorian’.
