Despite our efforts, Saint Joseph Catholic Church began demolishing this beautiful Marietta house this week. Known locally as Campbell Hill or Sugar Hill, this house was originally built for John Campbell in 1852. The house itself was constructed of stone and brick and the exterior walls were reportedly two feet thick. The masonry structure was gutted during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain in 1864, but was quickly restored and enlarged in the years following the Civil War. The house and property were sold in 1938 and additions were built on both sides of the main house. In 1952 the house was sold to Saint Joseph Catholic Church. Through the years the house served as a convent, Parish meeting space, and, most recently, a rectory. Cobb Landmarks met with Catholic Construction Services, Inc. twice to advocate for retaining at least the original masonry portion of the house. In the end, the church decided not to spend the funds needed to renovate the house. What's replacing the house? Parking spots, according to a site plan provided to Cobb Landmarks. Yes, the house had asbestos and lead. Almost every historic house owner has to address this at some point. Most people have these materials removed rather than demolishing the entire structure. The reality is that you’re still supposed to remediate and abate the building before it can be torn down, so, in the end, you have to do it either way. Some say the house had fallen into disrepair with mold and other issues. How did it deteriorate to the point of being declared unsalvageable? Who was responsible for maintaining the house? Some say the cost was too high to renovate. Renovating this house was estimated to cost $2 million. Building a new rectory is estimated to cost $1.2 million (plus the added demolition cost). The church is in the midst of a capital campaign with the goal of raising $5.5 million and has reportedly raised $4 million. We are sad to see this local landmark (and significant piece of Saint Joseph's history) being sent to the landfill.

Le secteur des rues Berri et Jean-Talon en 1961, à l’aube de la construction de la station de métro Jean-Talon. Berri marque la borne ouest de la terre acquise le 25 avril 1659 par Simon Després, dit Berry. Cette terre va de la rivière Saint-Martin (rue Saint-Antoine) aux environs de la rue Sherbrooke, entre les rues Berri et Labelle. Sous ces apparences diverses, la rue Berri cache une autre réalité qui, depuis les années 60, modifie considérablement le mode de vie des Montréalais. Sous cette rue roule désormais le métro, reliant le sud et le nord de la ville. Abstraction faite d’une interruption entre le boulevard Rosemont et la rue Jean-Talon, la rue Berri s’étend du fleuve à la rivière des Prairies. Son développement s’est fait cependant très progressivement. Ouverte avant 1818, entre la rue Saint-Louis et Saint-Antoine, elle est prolongée jusqu’à la rue de la Commune en 1895, lorsque l’on exproprie des terrains pour la construction de la gare Viger.
