For the photography buffs out there, it will probably come as no surprise to you that this amazing looking photo was created by none other than Bernard F. Eilers (1878-1951). Back in the day, there were only a few prominent Amsterdam photographers who used lighting the way Eilers did - I’m a big fan for sure. In today’s post you see the Raadhuisstraat 50-44, looking in the direction of the Herengracht. On the right, a small part of the ‘Van Gendt’ shopping gallery is visible. Entrevías, Vallecas 1959 vs 2024. Un grupo de niños se arremolinan en un día soleado de verano a la sombra de la parroquia de San Carlos Borromeo, en su fachada que da a la calle del Conde Rodríguez de San Pedro 1, muy cerca de la Avenida de Entrevías. La parroquia de San Carlos Borromeo conocida como “la Iglesia roja de Entrevías” por su implicación con los problemas de exclusión social de los vecinos, en la actualidad es un centro pastoral. En la imagen podemos apreciar entre otros detalles, un puesto de helados, unos botijos de agua a la sombra de la fachada, niños sentados y asomados en las ventanas de la parroquia y un niño que porta un cartel que anuncia las películas que en aquel momento se proyectaban en el desaparecido Cine Entrevías: “Los ángeles del volante” con Fernando Fernán Gómez, José Luis Ozores y Manuel Moran entre otros grandes y “La niña de la Venta” con Lola Flores y Manolo Caracol. The old photo is from Facebook, on the ‘Oor Dundee Pals’ page and shows a view looking down Well Road. Off in the distance is the Hawkhill and the Princess Cinema at its junction. The building on the left with the billboard on the wall is the Astoria ballroom. This later became the Queen’s Theatre and eventually it was owned by the University. All the buildings have been demolished except the cottage on the left. The row of 4 cottages are now used for university staff. See map of how area used to look. “I can buy myself flowers” How would it feel to have a stranger on the wall? Would you be more comfortable with flowers? What if I tell you the person in the portrait is not actually a human, but instead something made up or imagined..? An object? A robot? The future is here, and so is the past. Art-ificial Intelligence is all around us. As an experiment, and to create a bridge between the past and present I have created imaginary people from different eras, (who are not a real people at all) and placed them inside vintage frames from the past. To be met by eyes 👀 looking back at you when you enter a room can be both intriguing and maybe a little disturbing. But it is a very effective way to create a focal point in interior design.
