REFORMER AND THE ARC ✨ On to some side-lying magic. This took an interesting turn as I didn’t plan the way things would turn out. But in the end as simple as this looks, it’s a little wicked. Try the whole sequence but only if you’re not holding tension in your upper body, maybe save it for later if you don’t feel you can melt into your trunk Still on 2 🔺 springs and this will definitely work better if you’ve tried my last 2 posts first The goal is hip mobility for stability and strength 1- single leg press (as simple as it sounds and looks) 2- hold with internal and external rotation of hip. Try to get your trunk to stay still while you mobilize the hip. When you tilt your pelvis back allow the front of your hip to crease deeper and you when you tilt your pelvis forward try to thrust your pelvis in a way that your hip bone pushes forward into your skin. It’s a bit of witchcraft but your hips will be surprisingly freer at the end 3- add a quasi-chest opener. Sweep forward as the hip goes back and backwards as the hip moves forward - feel for your obliques getting a twisting motion 4- this is the melting torso exercise. I’m using softness in my upper body to be able to stabilize myself on the arc without gripping (not an easy feat) and lifting my pelvis. Note a sticky mat might be required on the arc 5- as above but with a hold because it is inspired by Pilates, and add a lower leg reach. PILATES AND THE ARC ✨ If you saw my last post, the basis is the same but I’ve removed the ball behind my back. I find clients tend to have more mobility through the spine after doing the warm up with the ball so I introduce the arc alone after. I’m still using 2 🔺 springs The theme of this series is spine mobility, so as I push the carriage I explore flexion, extension and rotation. There’s also a hint of fascial flossing through the posterior chain to see if I can yield more favorable results 1- like an an curl - I use the load to find extension and my abs to return me back to base 2- a full spinal rotation without the base turning - very reminiscent of classical Pilates but I also added plantar flexion and dorsiflexion for the win 3- a pulse in both contralateral directions to attempt a release through the posterior oblique system 4- an ode to climb a tree, testing flexibility in the hamstrings (and today for me is limited so not the best visual but you’ll get the idea) 5- a take on semi circle with the arc 6- semi-circle in the opposite direction 7- the richest move in the sequence - pure bliss (also you should note an improvement in clients range of motion or your own for that matter if you’ve tried the full series including the previous post) Save to try later 🤍 #pilatesarc #pilates #pilatesreformer #moveyourspine #reformer #reformerpilates #precision #pilatesvideo #pilatesflow #reformerexercise #advancedreformer #movewell #pilatesinstructor #pilatesteacher #burlington #burlingtonpilates #oakville #oakvillepilates #reformerarc #spinemobility #pilatesprinciples

THE ARC AND REFORMER SERIES ✨ I’ll be sharing lots of ideas and progressions over the next few posts using the arc on the reformer With all the craze with the new viral SNL video and how they depict Pilates, I’ll stick to what Pilates is actually about and hope this trend dies soon Pilates has always been and will always be about the 6 principles Breath • Control • Concentration • Centering • Flow • Precision The integrity of the method is currently tainted but I believe we’ll prevail and come out stronger in the end if we don’t lose sight of this and become part of the masses. I’ll choose to be a dinosaur hard on this one 🦕🦖 I’m using 2 🔺 springs 1- with the ball behind my back, I’m focusing on my rectus abdominis contracting as I push out with my legs. The ball offers feedback for the push and helps me contract my front line 2- with an external rotation in my hips I am still using the ball as feedback but going a little deeper with the focus, cueing for the zipper on a sleeping bag starting from the inside of the heel and zipping up the midline, through pelvic floor and ending at the navel 3- adding a closed kinetic chain rotation. Both hands are involved with a gentle push in order to feel the stretch around the ribs, obliques and even contralateral cervical erector spinae muscles 4- using the hold on the ankles, creating a lengthening for the back body (hands can glide up the legs if need be) 5- using the press on the carriage to create lengthening in the front body cueing for wide collar bones yet soft shoulders 6- one final rotation for t-spine with longer levers and connection into ball to create awareness that the lumbar spine does not actually rotate and one should never cue twisting from low back…. This series is pure contemporary Pilates. BACKBENDS ✨ I couldn’t finish this series without adding this gem 💎 Every single exercise is high up on my favorites list. SPINAL EXTENSION ✨ Yes I’m still over here working on spinal extension. I have a few more post ideas to share and then I’ll move on I’ve spent all month finding ways to mobilize the spine in various ways to optimize spinal extension and in all themes I’ve explored I most say I’ve been the most inspired by this one As an anterior tilted person I’ve been in a happy place all month. Next month I’ll have to fix myself 🥴 This series is done with the short barre from the tower, but a Thera-band will likely work and probably be less restrictive 1- scapular glides (the shrug and the unshrug) 2- Spinal extension and shoulder hyperflexion 3- single arm hyperflexion with scapular retraction 4- spine extension with elbow flexion and downward rotation of the scapula with combo of elbow extension and upward rotation of scapula 5- same as above with slight hyperflexion of the shoulders and minus the spine extension 6- full spinal extension coupled with shoulder hyperflexion and scapular upward rotation 7- bow pose from yoga with the assistance of the dowel. I had an amazing time attending the Stott Pilates Advanced Reformer Course @seabreezepilates this month. I started training as a Pilates Teacher in 2014, with a Stott Pilates Matwork Course. Brigitte was the IT ( together with @alisonsalmond_osteopilates ) on that course, and it was great to have her again after so many years. This course really challenged me, but also reminded me of the joy of moving for the sake of simply moving, because it feels great! It gave me a chance to explore and push my limits, and made me quite proud of my body and what it is capable of! I completed my Advanced Diploma of the Pilates Method (10839NAT) with National Pilates Training (RTO21719) in 2018. This life changing decision opened a new door for me that I wasn’t expecting. BACKBENDS ✨ Finding mobility in the upper T-spine and cervical spine is probably the trickiest for our clients. They’re not movers, they often sit at a desk all day, they haven’t been taught breathing mechanics and they carry stress as a result in their upper trunk. As Pilates instructors our job is to help them understand just enough about movement so that they can be aware when they’re in a faulty pattern but not overburden them with information that won’t stick We’re not teaching future Pilates instructors, we’re facilitating optimal movement in and outside the studio In this sequence, which is unfinished and I’ll get to that in a second, I’m targeting ways to build support through the shoulder mechanics so I can finish with high bridge using the push thru barre 1- articulated bridge to find space between the vertebrae 2- single leg on push-thru with segmentation of hips then spine articulation 3- seated flexion and extension of upper t-spine and c-spine 4- reverse table 5- reverse table with increased load through shoulder mechanics to pull the body through and push it back up (could be a great warm-up for tendon stretch) 6- add a single leg lift 7- prep for high bridge (the goal was to take it on to the push thru barre, but I didn’t feel ready so I decided to stop - I can try again when there’s someone in studio to monitor me) If you succeed in my last attempt I’d love for you to tag me as I’d love to see it 🤍 #knowyourlimits #listentoyourbody #pilates #pilatesreformer #reformer #reformerpilates #precision #pilatesvideo #pilatesflow #reformerexercise #advancedreformer #movewell #pilatesinstructor #pilatesteacher #burlington #burlingtonpilates #oakville #oakvillepilates #backbends #spineextension #upsidedown #advancedpilates

BACKBENDS ✨ One of my favorite go-to exercises for spine extension is this one. I love starting small, seeing if I can obtain articulation in my clients upper T-spine with ease. Spine extension does not recruit traps, yet for most people it does, simply because they are overused. In order to get to the erectors, the multifidi, the semispinalis, interspinalis and intertransversarii the superficial muscles need to be relaxed. Simple, small, repetitive motions that recruit underlying supportive muscles are needed to create a meaningful experience for the intended purpose. To achieve softness you have to approach gently. We live in a fast paced world, our movements really don’t need to be In slides 2 and 3, I explore rotation to target clavicles. Think wide and narrow. Think scapular glides with retraction and protraction, think arm bone coming out of socket to be suctioned back in. These are all cues that can help with fascial flossing (it’s what I call repetitive movement with minimal force) Slide 4 is the final exercise with full spinal extension and flexion. It feels good, most individuals can do it with ease and most of all, they feel happy after and impressed with what they could achieve. SPINAL EXTENSION w/ assistance If I want to instantly feel good, all I have to do is a series of back bend exercises and I’m happy from the inside out, they give me energy, they make me feel alive, they make me smile. That’s a lot of power for one single motion The catch is that’s not what my body needs but since I’m all about balance I give myself the same recipe I give everybody else: a lot of what you want and sneak in some of what you need In slide #1 I’m using a short dowel and the long box and peeling off the box, my toes are wrapped under the foot barre In slide #2 I’m using the short box, my hips are externally rotated and I’m using a lot of glutes and adductor strength to peel into a spine extension In slide # 3 I’m gaining the most range of motion but the barre is now over my ankles and I’m still externally rotated in my hip joints. More glute max and medial adductor strength I’m using all springs and the carriage isn’t moving. THE PURPOSE ✨ One of my favorite parts of teacher training is explaining the “why” to future teachers. The creative process is one thing but if it doesn’t make sense then the exercise won’t necessarily add up to anything constructive. That doesn’t mean you should avoid it but know your why. Do you want a useful sequence or just something hard? This set up was inspired by @foundationpilates thank you for your creative process that allowed me to copy and play with it to make it my own When I started on the 1st slide I thought what a great way to target glutes and obliques. Then I thought if I add a rotation I’m targeting the posterior oblique system. If I add a prop, I’m also lengthening levers so it’s an added challenge to stability but I’m also creating a feedback loop for my proprioceptive neurons. If I use my adductors to press out, I’m changing the focus and the goal (obviously) but if I add the rotation towards the body coupled with the adduction then I’m working on anterior oblique system. SHOULDER LOVE ✨ One of my A-HA moments from 12 years ago was finding out that my shoulder blades and my arm bones have different functions and that when we say shoulders it’s referring to the humerus and not the scapula. Coming from the fashion industry I viewed shoulders as a unit. Shoulders were where we created holes in garments to make sleeves. In neuroscience shoulders are connected via nerves to alpha (upper) motor neurons to initiate movements In greek mythology, we carry the weight of the world on our shoulders or we can have broad shoulders (I believe this is from a Jewish proverb), we can use our shoulders for someone to lean on, we can carry a chip on our shoulders, we can brush a shoulder off Most people have tense shoulders, which comes from poor posture and poor breathing mechanics I am fortunate to have a shoulder sister @johanna_pilates whose love of shoulders rivals my own 🥰 Whatever your use of the word shoulder or your love / hate relationship with it, moving it in all the various ways it can move is essential Try these sleek shoulder moves. LATERAL SLING ✨ I made the mistake of filming this video and then the phone rang and I had to book a new client in and then I ran out of time as my next client came in so I never got to do my other side. That night I couldn’t sleep as my whole right lateral system felt worked and my left one didn’t. To clarify I couldn’t sleep because my body felt uneven physically, it was uncomfortable not because of neurosis about it (mental fixation). Also note that sometimes it’s a fine line All this to say this series is fire if you’re looking to target the lateral system in a BIG way. STRETCHES ✨ Many of you do this as well, you just lay on the reformer and start moving and see what sticks. Out of about 45 minutes, I got at least 4 worthy exercises, the other ones didn’t really seem like they would connect here. I posted my favorite first as I love a good spine mobility sequence. I think this is teachable, to clients that are body aware without spine conditions The second post was inspired by @bonniezeitner I knew I’d figure out a way to get a psoas stretch one day 🤍 thanks for the inspo The 3rd one is taken from boomerang on the mat. REVERSE SWAN 🦢 This series has earned my respect in that it can be graceful and yet can bring you to literally tap out From exploring discomfort in my last post to control of the entire kinetic chain to a reverse push-up is bound to bring up some interesting surprises On my 2nd slide I can get 4 in that’s all I got. MOVING IN DISCOMFORT ✨ Recently I’ve started to challenge my body, from practicing deep splits to exploring back bends again to hoisting myself up on a pole, whatever the way I’m exploring the discomfort, the unknown, the opposite of feeling safe all the time. But gently. With the self-awareness only a skilled Pilates instructor has. In this series I’m testing new territory. Isometric superficial front line hold, scapular elevation, depression, upward and downward rotation without tension and an interplay of a rec fem release. Actively using my back body to create a release in my front body. Advanced Tree🌲Leg to side This may look a bit out of your league😳😅because the stunning Cheyanne has amazing hip mobility as an accomplished dancer😍However, there is a basic version of Tree, which is very achievable for most body types. For example, the extension is optional and the leg doesn’t have to abduct all the way out there lol, it can just stay pointing upwards to ceiling (hands holding leg). STABILITY: spine during articulation; pelvis and spine resisting rotation against leg movements. MOBILITY: hip flexion of gesture leg; spinal articulation; hip horizontal abduction; pelvis on femur of supporting leg (in footstrap). CORE SYSTEMS ✨ . Fresh out of my 2nd complete reacher training course and always so inspired to see my students grow and evolve and literally fall in love with the process . We ended this past weekend with core systems and I was feeling creative with my content to target all 4 systems at once. This series is challenging yet feels really good all at the same time .
