BACKBENDS ✨ I couldn’t finish this series without adding this gem 💎 Every single exercise is high up on my favorites list. BACKBENDS ✨ I couldn’t talk about spine extension without incorporating this bad boy High bridge on the Cadillac or tower is the finest, the realest, the most intricate way to target spinal articulation from the head to the tail Prepping for high bridge takes a long time as tension anywhere in the shoulders, neck, upper T-spine will mean that this exercise will completely miss its mark and result in a bad experience It’s a balance of knowing where to grip and where to be soft, when to hold on, when to let go. SPINAL EXTENSION ✨ Yes I’m still over here working on spinal extension. I have a few more post ideas to share and then I’ll move on I’ve spent all month finding ways to mobilize the spine in various ways to optimize spinal extension and in all themes I’ve explored I most say I’ve been the most inspired by this one As an anterior tilted person I’ve been in a happy place all month. Next month I’ll have to fix myself 🥴 This series is done with the short barre from the tower, but a Thera-band will likely work and probably be less restrictive 1- scapular glides (the shrug and the unshrug) 2- Spinal extension and shoulder hyperflexion 3- single arm hyperflexion with scapular retraction 4- spine extension with elbow flexion and downward rotation of the scapula with combo of elbow extension and upward rotation of scapula 5- same as above with slight hyperflexion of the shoulders and minus the spine extension 6- full spinal extension coupled with shoulder hyperflexion and scapular upward rotation 7- bow pose from yoga with the assistance of the dowel. BACKBENDS ✨ Finding mobility in the upper T-spine and cervical spine is probably the trickiest for our clients. They’re not movers, they often sit at a desk all day, they haven’t been taught breathing mechanics and they carry stress as a result in their upper trunk. BACKBENDS ✨ One of my favorite go-to exercises for spine extension is this one. I love starting small, seeing if I can obtain articulation in my clients upper T-spine with ease. Spine extension does not recruit traps, yet for most people it does, simply because they are overused. In order to get to the erectors, the multifidi, the semispinalis, interspinalis and intertransversarii the superficial muscles need to be relaxed. Simple, small, repetitive motions that recruit underlying supportive muscles are needed to create a meaningful experience for the intended purpose. To achieve softness you have to approach gently. We live in a fast paced world, our movements really don’t need to be In slides 2 and 3, I explore rotation to target clavicles. Think wide and narrow. Think scapular glides with retraction and protraction, think arm bone coming out of socket to be suctioned back in. These are all cues that can help with fascial flossing (it’s what I call repetitive movement with minimal force) Slide 4 is the final exercise with full spinal extension and flexion. It feels good, most individuals can do it with ease and most of all, they feel happy after and impressed with what they could achieve. BACKBENDS ✨ Our theme this month @thecornerstonepilates is #backbends These often tend to be misinterpreted and feared, but backbend is just another name for spine extension, and gentle spine extension is just as important as big moves In this sequence I prepare the spine for backbends through a series of gentle pelvic and spine drills I’m using the tower springs - 2 x 🔹 springs with the sling from @balanced_body at the base of my ribs for the entire set. I’m also seated on the short box and my blue springs are sprung at the top rung of the vertical tower barres 1- using hands pressing into thighs for kinetic chain feedback, I’m exploring range of motion for flexion and extension staying within end ranges that feel good to me 2- you cannot access the spine without assessing the mobility of the hips. Mobilize to stabilize. These are teeters - not side bends. Think like a weeble wobble doll. The sling supports the ribs and you want to knit the front to fill the back here 3- the pelvic walk. If SIJ is healthy this will feel great, if your SIJ is flared up perhaps avoid slide 3 and 6, or gauge how your body responds. Pelvic walks are a great tool to isolate the pelvis from the spine and the legs to be able to incorporate it back into the body without the feeling of being stuck 4- Hands to base of skull, by eliminating the feedback of the hands on thighs this becomes more of an open chain exercise and allows you to explore greater ROM 5- combining spinal flexion (mainly thoracic and cervical) and extension with the rocking motion to create a sense of mastery of the body while fine-tuning the breath and the intended goal of a backbend 6- the final variation of the beginning sequence as my next post will explore different levels of how to access this glorious movement. The Drop Back is one of those cool skills that feels a million miles away when you first start exploring it. But… just like everything else, if you approach it systematically, with consistency it’s very doable once you have a solid bridge. There are many ways to go about this, but this is a step by step process that takes the fear of falling on your head into account by doing some less daunting drills. All along the way we’re building both confidence as well as strength by focusing on keeping those glutes really strongly engaged and taking each portion nice and slow and controlled. Doing the last few steps with cushions or a spotter is very helpful in case you bail, but also for developing trust in yourself. The grass is also a nice place to practice these. 😁 Hope this helps! SPINAL EXTENSION w/ assistance If I want to instantly feel good, all I have to do is a series of back bend exercises and I’m happy from the inside out, they give me energy, they make me feel alive, they make me smile. That’s a lot of power for one single motion The catch is that’s not what my body needs but since I’m all about balance I give myself the same recipe I give everybody else: a lot of what you want and sneak in some of what you need In slide #1 I’m using a short dowel and the long box and peeling off the box, my toes are wrapped under the foot barre In slide #2 I’m using the short box, my hips are externally rotated and I’m using a lot of glutes and adductor strength to peel into a spine extension In slide # 3 I’m gaining the most range of motion but the barre is now over my ankles and I’m still externally rotated in my hip joints. More glute max and medial adductor strength I’m using all springs and the carriage isn’t moving. Make Your Neck Training More Challenging ⬇️ Read & Share ⬇️ The first neck exercise I got introduced to was the Mckenzie tuck 👇🏼 🔵 Literally tucking your chin until it disappears (like in the exercise above)👆🏼 🔵 It’s like the plank of neck training. Most people begin their neck strengthening journey with this exercise. 🔵 It’s great for beginners because it requires zero load, and most people feel confident doing it for this reason. BUT 😅 Like the rest of the spine, people have developed a fear of loading their neck 😱 Somewhere down the line someone did a really good job of convincing them it’s dangerous‼️🫠 So people get stuck doing basic chin tucks forever, just like they get stuck doing planks because of a fear of rounding their spine 🫣 The truth is, our neck has many functions, and each one of them can be progressively overloaded, just like any other part of the body. ⚠️This isn’t a personalised neck training routine, it’s just a little insight into a couple of the exercises I’m currently working on ⚠️ Are you afraid of training your neck? A beautiful extension focussed practice today @kindredyogalife . I find extension so so difficult. I didn't used to bend that way but for a balanced body we need to take it into extension. Extension of my spine makes me feel so strong, stacked and integrated. Not only are you opening you mid back (thoracic) but you are strengthening your back muscles, shoulders, abs, glutes, quads and hip flexors. It's a full body movement pattern. Saturday Bends Just a few pieces from my Bendy session today. Shoulders and Spine feel like a dream and some new territories were explored. As intense as back bends can be, they also give me a sense of relief that few other training elements match.
