Stalker (1979) dir. Andrei Tarkovsky A guide, whose profession is titled as a Stalker, takes a writer and a professor into a place known as The Zone. In The Zone there's said to be a place called The Room that is said to grant a person's deepest desire. The three men navigate the desolate landscape in search of said room. I love a movie with a premise as simple as this. Because though, yes it is a pretty simple and straightforward with its plot, what Tarkovsky does with it is rather profound. The cinematography is beautiful and gorgeous, giving the chilling atmosphere of The Zone a real presence. And it being a Russian film, you'd think that this was a commentary on Chernobyl, but that would be incorrect. Chernobyl would occur seven years later leading some to think that movie was prophetic as today there are guides in Russia who call themselves Stalkers who take tourists into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone to find "The Room" which is allegorical for really anything. There's one more thing that makes this movie standout. A pretty large chunk of this film's cast and crew, including the film's leads and the director died of lung cancer in the short years after this movie. The waters that makes up for a lot of this movie's chilling atmosphere in which the characters were trudging through, were actually poisoned with nuclear waste. Though they didn't know it at the time. Oh and just about half of the film had to be shot again because an inexperienced cinematographer ruined the shots and they went unchecked. Tarkovsky had to basically shoot the first half of the film again with half the budget. Yeesh. This sounds like one of those "Heart of Darkness" type of films. Stalker (1979) Dir. Andrei Tarksovsky Synopsis: A mental mutant leads pilgrims to a mysterious room where dreams come true. "Stalker" is another film where I am finding myself struggling to figure out what to say. It's a film that is so incredibly complex and ambitious that it demands admiration, even amongst its surprisingly few naysayers. I've only seen one other film by Tarkovsky, which was "Nostalghia", which I despised, equating it to cinematic NyQuil. Tarkovsky was a filmmaker who used the medium to argue that style and substance are one in the same. The camera work is so painfully deliberate, leaving each shot on the screen for both far too long and just the right amount of time simultaneously. I've seen the word "hypnotic" used a myriad of times to describe his work, and I can't help but agree. I dozed off at one point in this film, and I wasn't even tired. It was as if I had become so absorbed into this film's setting that I struggled to remain conscious. If the phrase "every frame a painting" applied to any singular film, it would likely be this one. Speaking of consciousness, now would be a good idea to try and tackle what this film is actually about. When I wrote my review for "Saint Maud", I mentioned that I despise spirituality in nearly all its forms, and so most films exploring that subject do absolutely nothing for me. Even though this is clearly a religious film, I still was deeply riveted by the images and emotions that are left lingering on the screen. "Stalker" is a mediation on consciousness, and what it means to exist. The film, or at least its protagonist, supposes the idea that the reason this world is as hopeless as it is is because of a lack of faith. I disagree with this wholeheartedly. Faith is what makes the world hopeless. Not believing in anything is too painful for many people, and so they spend their lives searching for a higher meaning beyond what is in front of us while we are conscious. Existence is now. Existence is inside all of us. Existence is between all of us. "Stalker" is a film that reaffirmed this belief at a very deep level. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

- STALKER (1979), score 10, 3rd viewing. The best film from one of the undisputed greatest directors of all time and my 3rd-favorite film of all time. A visual masterpiece of meditation, austerity, and decay. The story is basically three men journeying through an alien realm of probability to find the answer to their heart’s deepest desire. But… what if you grant that wish and no longer have any reason to live? The themes are religious, metaphysical, philosophical, and ultimately human. I always preface this film by warning, “It’s glacially slow, quite long, and very philosophical.” So far, everyone that I’ve warned that way comes out saying they really, really enjoyed it. It may seem daunting, but this is a film every film lover must see. Thank you from the bottom of my soul to the Austin Film Society for allowing me to see this on the big screen.

More than not being a movie for everyone, I think Stalker is not a movie for every mood. It’s goal is not to entertain but to question, to make the audience reflect on humanity, choices and meaning. The story revolves around a teacher and a scientist who wish to go to a restricted area called the Zone, and hire a man sensible to its whims and thoughts, the Stalker. Whilst they enter the Zone looking for the Room which will supposedly make their wishes come true, their journey through existentialism and spirituality is what ends up captivating and engaging the audience. The cinematography is incredible, savage and dreamy at times, and it establishes the perfect scenario for the psychological and mental expedition that the teacher and scientist take, the emotional vs the logic. Filled with metaphors and hidden meaning in almost every scene, the Stalker is proposedly a slow movie. This, if approached with the right perspective, sets the tone to all the layers the movie is trying to convey, and allows the audience to fully embrace and perceive the poetic message Andrei Tarkovsky is trying to pass. Not only I think that Stalker is a must watch, I think it is a must watch more than once. Tarkovsky uses the film medium to expose philosophical questions and with this, he puts the viewer in a great active role in Stalker, as the film only makes sense with a viewer to make sense of it.
