Ivan the Terrible, Part One (Sergei Eisenstein, 1944). It's been many years since I've seen this. These photos I found online make me want to see it again. Ivan the Terrible comes in two parts though the second part was condemned by Stalin and not released until after his death. The film tells the story of the great monarch who unified Russia under his rule ("terrible" is how Ivan is remembered in the west, but the Russian word means something more like formidable or awe-inspiring). The photography is sensational as is the montage (Eisenstein practically invented editing as an artistic practice with the Odessa Steps sequence in Battleship Potemkin, 1925). And the story is a sweeping but nuanced and insightful one of power and power corrupted. As a young man, at a time when film was fighting to be recognized as art, Eisenstein was foundational to the understanding of film history.
