I don't see many people talk about these 2 movies, I always found them entertaining and probably time for re-watch. From what I remember, they are like a Russian version of Blade or Underworld.. perhaps just not as good. I probably should read the novels by Sergei Lukyanenko also. Night Watch (2004) Among normal humans live the "Others" possessing various supernatural powers. They are divided up into the forces of light and the forces of the dark, who signed a truce several centuries ago to end a devastating battle. Ever since, the forces of light govern the day while the night belongs to their dark opponents. In modern day Moscow the dark Others actually roam the night as vampires while a "Night Watch" of light forces, among them Anton, the movie's protagonist, try to control them and limit their outrage. R.I.P. à tous les coins du livre qui ont souffert pendant tout mes trajets en transport en commun 🙈. Dans mon envie de découvrir des histoires d'horreur autour du globe je suis tombé sur ce petit roman. C'est une histoire plutôt courte,dans laquelle le personnage principal part en quête de fossiles en Sibérie pour faire fortune sur le marché noir. Comme on peut s'y attendre rien ne va se passer comme prévu. C'est plutôt prometteur pour un jeune auteur. (‘Viy’, 1967) The titular Viy, the monster that even vampires and werewolves are scared of(!) . The monster’s heavy-lidded eyes which have to be opened for him such that he can unleash his power reminds me of Balor of the Evil Eye from Celtic legend (thanks, ‘Slaine’ from “2000AD”). . I’m unsure what the moral of the story is (or even if there is one). I note that, right at the end, Khoma’s two mates disagree over what supposedly happened, and they argue about whether Khoma’s even dead. I hope he made it out alive; sure, he beat Pannochka-as-witch half to death, but she’s a bride of Satan, and he’s a priest(?), so… he can be forgiven for zealousness? For a film from the 1960s, and from an administration not famed for its opulence, forcing the central conflict onto two characters - Khoma (Leonid Kuravlyov, 1936 - 2022) and Pannochka (Natalya Varley) enables the scale of the production to be reduced without lessening its impact. . Likewise, the rear-projection(?) effects also forces the focus tightly on to the protagonist and antagonist, all the better to make them either seem overwhelmed (like Khoma), or be the eye of the storm (like Pannochka). At first, this “ridden through the air” seemed crazy. Then, it reminded me of (what I’ve read about) voodoo ceremonies, where the faithful (or even the houngan) is “possessed” by the summoned loa, and it’s referred to as being “ridden” by the spirit. . Силится посчитать, когда же он умер. Когда флиртовал с девицей из отдела снабжения, избегая взгляда жены, полного унылой укоризны? Когда смолчал, потихоньку подсидев начальника, словно невзначай? Или ещё раньше, на войне, когда однажды с другими бойцами вышел в белое ватное море - это туман укрыл собой подпалины на шкуре очередного Дикого поля. Now I’m definitely biased, and certain things might not exactly hold up nowadays 😂 and the English dubbing does make a difference on the overall impression, but every time I’m getting ready to watch it, it makes my heart flutter, despite the technical limitations of that era in Russian cinema. The film follows a a young priest who is ordered to preside over the wake of witch in a small old wooden church of a remote village. Seasonal spooktacular the third: “Viy (1967)” [pronounced “Vee”], is a Soviet horror fantasy about a morally-lapsed seminarian who wrongs a witch, adapting the same Gogol source material that Mario Bava called on for “Black Sunday.” It’s beautifully shot with a number of stunning practical effects and a final act to revival any other fantastical film. I love the colours in Soviet films. It’s so unlike American cinema of the time, namely because the Soviets didn’t have access to western technologies and had to invent their own parallel systems. What was true for the space race was true for the arts, too. This Severin edition comes with an interview with Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) about the film, as well as an interview with John Leman Riley on the history of Russo-Soviet sci-fi, fantasy and horror in literature and film. All I knew about Viy (1967) upfront was that it’s about a witch and that it’s the first Soviet-era horror film officially released in the USSR. With that in mind I had my expectations pretty low but it was actually a decent fantasy horror! A young priest has to stay three nights in a church with the corpse of a witch. Needless to stay there’s lot of singing and drinking vodka.
