In the 19th century Samuel Keir and his family were business people who among other things were in the business of drilling for salt brine, a very important commodity. What came up along with the desirable brine was sticky tar - bitumen. Initially Kier disposed of it by dumping it into the near by river. His neighbours were not pleased as it polluted the water. This got him thinking about how to use it to make a profit. He bottled it as a medicinal tonic, and sold in half-pint flasks for fifty cents each. It was advertised to cure ills, aches and itches. At some point when he was still dumping oil in the river it caught fire and this got Kier thinking about making it into fuel for lamps. Coal oil had already been distilled into kerosene by Canadian Abraham Gesner. So Kier got right to it and used whiskey stills to distill kerosene from the bitumen and succeeded. Purtroppo Polidori non godrà mai della fama scaturita da quest’opera, per anni erroneamente attribuita a Lord Byron nonostante le numerose lettere in cui Byron stesso ne negava la paternità. Ispirandosi a un frammento scritto proprio da lui, Polidori ci descrive un affascinante dandy che ama frequentare i salotti inglesi, Lord Ruthven, un uomo al cui fascino è difficile resistere, dedito ai vizi e ad attività immorali. “A quanto pareva solo le risatine sommesse delle belle riuscivano ad attirare la sua attenzione, ma solo perché potesse soffocarle con lo sguardo gettando il terrore in quegli animi in cui regnava la civetteria. Coloro che provavano questa sensazione di sconcerto non sapevano spiegarsi da dove provenisse: alcuni l'attribuivano ai suoi occhi grigio spento che, pur fissandosi sul volto di un bersaglio, parevano incapaci d'inoltrarvisi e d'insinuarsi con lo sguardo attraverso gli intimi ingranaggi del suo cuore; ma che ricadevano sulle gote come piombo, a gravare su una pelle che erano incapaci di penetrare.” Il vampiro descritto da Polidori è una figura che mi ha incantato in modo molto simile alla mia adorata Carmilla, seducente ma terribile. Nello stesso modo Lord Ruthven incanta le sue vittime, seppur in lui emerga in qualsiasi istante la severità di uno sguardo giudicante nel cogliere le bassezze che persino donne sposate sono disposte a compiere per attirare la sua attenzione e godendo della vergogna che ricade su di esse. Eppure da grande oratore, il suo carisma lascia passare in secondo piano gli aspetti del suo carattere. Polidori non si sofferma sul suo aspetto fisico, ce lo descrive solo come un uomo di bell’aspetto e dotato di un’ambigua moralità; alle apparenze sembra un rispettabile aristocratico senza alcun vizio, eppure si circonda da chi è schiavo di dissolutezze e piaceri e gode egli stesso nel portare miseria nella vita di quest’ultimi. Let me just tell you about the insanity of this sale and how all of these different individuals’ lives were turned upside but then ended up finding each other and created one fitting masterpiece. Try to follow along — it get’s SUPER entangled My Seller’s of Minota found me on ✨INSTAGRAM✨ needing more space for their growing family After creating a game plan together, they knocked out their listing-prep punch list and we put it up on the market; finding a Buyer quickly In a not-too-far-off neighborhood of #Akron , there were some Seller’s of a home on Herbert who were listing at the same time and also found a buyer pretty quickly. A hop, skip and jump away, a Buyer also had begun her home search and found a home she adored and put an offer in on, which was accepted! Little did they know, all 3 were about to each come upon a huge unfortunate plot twist. The home’s contract on Herbert fell through just 1 week before closing because of an unfortunate and sudden passing of the buyer 😔 so they were forced to re-list. But because they re-listed for a lower price because of the market shift, my Seller’s of Minota were able to afford it and got their offer accepted! However, their home’s contract on Minota fell through the day we were expecting a clear to close because the Buyer was not being honest to both loan officer and agent, and the loan officer and agent were not being honest with me. My Seller’s could not purchase Herbert without selling Minota, so their family member was able to purchase it cash as long as we re-listed Minota asap. Meanwhile, the Buyer who was a hop, skip, and jump away also fell out of contract because of unforeseen costly repairs that came up on the inspection report which she was not comfortable taking on. This Buyer’s timeline matched up when we re-listed Minota and she was able to snag it up quickly! Wow! What a whirlwind!! Moral of the story — (pinned to the top comment)
