New Year, Same Me 😁 It's been quite a roller coaster of a year. I didn't get everything I wanted to done, but I'm feeling much better about myself & my playing. 😇 There's a lot to do next year. My main priority is polishing & memorizing the pieces that I know & learning more popular ones (like a Chopin scherzo, ballade, Rach 2, etc.) I also want to do more concertos & self duets as well as collaborate with more people! 🥰 Don't worry, I haven't forgot about marginalized composers! I'm gonna do more in-depth research on them & learn more forgotten gems. Also high on my to-do list is learning new genres like jazz & Latin music, exploring music from other cultures, and finally figuring out how to compose! 🤩 A lot of big overdue life changes are coming next year too. I'm finally getting back on my feet after years of mental health issues. And more exploration, freedom, and life will definitely show in my playing ❤️ Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to listen to my playing & read my ramblings this past year. It means the world to me to have an audience for my music & writing 💜 And for the last time this year, I hope you have a wonderful day! Iconic 🪦 Introducing the king of spooky classical music: Bach's iconic Toccata in D minor, arranged for piano by Busoni. 👑 Starring in the opening minutes of Disney's 1940 Fantasia (in an orchestral arrangement!) & the opening credits of the 1931 film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the piece cemented itself as a Halloween classic. Even though Bach never intended for the piece to sound spooky, it's hard to ignore the drama & suspense as soon as the music begins. 💀 I haven't really practiced the Toccata because I was obsessing over the fugue (as usually) but I'll revisit this and properly work on it in the future! Back to Bach 3.1 🔙 I haven't touched Bach for months, but I randomly decided to revisit this fugue, and I was glad I did 😁 I finally discovered the feeling I get when I practice his fugues: peace. Working through the different voices, identifying all the motifs and parts of the fugues, and practicing them all. I can spend hours exploring the endless interpretive possibilities, deconstructing and putting the fugues back together. It's akin to a meditation. 🧘 It's actually very fun trying out the different articulation possibilities. Touches of pedal in some places to emphasize notes, (scandalous, I know) drawing tenuto and accented lines within staccatos, emphasizing different voices, trying open and closed approaches, and just experimenting with all the possibilities. 🙏 I'm so grateful for your prayers for my dear mother. Could you also kindly keep my aunt in your prayers as she also has lung cancer. By strange coincidence, a couple of weeks ago I started working on a new video for a prayer revealed by Bahá'u'lláh for making decisions. The next day we had a family consultation to help my mother figure out what course of treatment she should take and where to receive it. Needless to say there were a number of weighty decisions that she had to make. After the consultation, I felt the urge to finish the video as fast as I could so that my dear mother could use it in the process of making these important decisions. As I was exporting the video for her, I marvelled at the timing of the creation of it on one of the most important days in my mother’s life. I realised that there are no coincidences. Paul McCartney wrote this song. It was inspired by his mother, Mary, who died when he was 14. According to McCartney, this is a very positive song, owing to its inspiration. One night when he was paranoid and anxious, he had a dream where he saw his mother, who had been dead for ten years or so - she came to him in his time of trouble, speaking words of wisdom that brought him much peace when he needed it. It was this sweet dream that got him to begin writing the song. I played a dozen bars in this piece with the characteristic sound of the music of Keith Emerson & the ELP band.
