I have been talking to parents about their struggles to help teach their kids how to manage their emotions for a while now. Do you want to know one of the things that has stood out to me most? SO many parents tell me the same struggle and then tell me how they feel like the only one going through it. They feel like there must be something wrong with them or their kids, and that is making it feel so hard. Well, let me be the voice of truth. You are not alone if you are struggling with helping your kids manage big feelings or with managing your own big feelings. You are not alone if it feels hard. It IS hard. The reason you feel alone isn't because it's only you struggling. The reason you feel alone is because we don't talk about our struggles enough. So, let's change the conversation about this. This month we are doing a deep dive into mindfulness, and for a good reason. Mindfulness practice is a skill that has an enormous impact on how our kids and we learn emotion regulation skills. And it all starts with the brain! How does mindfulness change the brain? Mindfulness is a powerful tool we can use for coping with our emotions. Many of us were not taught to be still during our uncomfortable moments because, well.... it's difficult! This journey begins with mindfulness. What is interesting about mindfulness is how it actually changes brain activity. Mindfulness helps reduce the intensity of the emotion in our amygdala and increases the activation in our prefrontal cortex (behind our forehead), which is the part that helps us THINK about what to do with these emotions. So, in less technical speak: mindfulness helps our brain think and respond to a big emotion instead of simply feeling and reacting to it! How cool is that!? Do you practice mindfulness? I am looking for new mothers to photograph, ideally within the first two weeks of birth (although there is a degree of flexibility with this). This project is close to my heart and is to help make visible that very raw period after birth when not only a baby is born but a 'mother' is made. I am super excited that so far two images from this project have been accepted by VOGUE and I would love to use the best photographs for an exhibition (details to be confirmed). In exchange for your time, completing a questionnaire and a model release I will provide 5 complimentary images of you and your baby in those early stages of motherhood. 😭 Montana asked me to help her ask Jesus into her heart last night. She’s only 4- so I’m going to take it with a grain of salt but I’m crying over here. She asked me why I was tearing up and I said I was so excited for her because it was the best decision she could ever make in her entire life. She told me that she didn’t know the right words, so I told her that she could tell God that, and ask Him to help her with the words. She said she wanted to be a leader, but that she would let Jesus be her leader. This was such a huge reminder to me of why I am here and why I do what I do every day. Thank you, Lord. This morning when I got her up, she had the biggest grin, smiling as she replayed what happened last night. It’s been a 🚴 riding kinda week! After visiting the cycle skills track at Mushrif Park we wanted a big cycle altogether! So we hit the 🏖️ #@kitebeachdubai which is definitely one of our favourite Dubai cycle spots. The track is totally perfect and the views unbeatable. The girls’ bikes fit in my car but when we come down here I hire the @careemuae bikes which are super easy via the app. AED 20 for a day pass and a free 45 min ride. After that it’s AED 10 for every 30 minutes & there are loads of docking stations across Dubai where you can see availability via the app. It’s a brilliant family solution to enable us to cycle together away from our close to home tracks. Mushriff cycle track 🚴 🌳 We love Mushriff park at the moment - so many activities from the @dubaicrocodilepark to @aventuraparks and the hiking trail to the cute little houses in the main park. So one activity left on their list was the 🚴 trail. Sadly the rules changed again a few weeks ago and the main trails, although designed for beginner mountain bikers to experienced cyclists, are now only accessible for over 12s so our day didn’t quite go to plan.
