For a painter, control over movements, whether you paint with your hand or foot, or mouth, is indispensable. Likewise, for our artisans, it is the weaving construction that demands understanding of controlled movements. This resultantly delivers a smooth finish to our handwoven fabrics. Our weaving arrangement makes our fabrics as sturdy as the Aztec marigold plants, given the inherent way in which Boro women are known to weave. Our fourth shade of green is named "Elaichi" after the Queen of Spices- Cardamom. However here is a fun twist- the color is extracted from onion skin waste, judiciously collected from local wholesale vegetable mandis and further processed into dye pigments giving us a luxurious and vibrant mossy green hue. An excellent example of recycling - from biowaste to a dye pigment to create an elegant handspun Eri Silk fabric. Come to own this beautiful fabric that lovingly gives back to our mother earth. Boro women are celebrated as one of the finest hands in handloom weaving from North East India. Weaving, a living body of knowledge, is practiced, honed and mastered by women, who form the centre of weaving ecosystem among the tribes in this region. As a specialised skill, it is transmitted as familial wisdom to the daughters over several generations. We have Mrs. Mahindri Baro, (affectionately addressed as Madwi- pronounced as Madei and meaning Aunt in Boro), who is captured while she carefully inspects her work on her loom. She started learning the art since the age of 14 and fondly remembers how her mother wove some of the most treasured fabrics for the family. A light breeze gently sways beautiful line drying Eri silk, dyed in balmy lime green. Another shade of our green hue, the pigments of which are extracted from the leaves of Chromolaena Odorota commonly known as Siam weed/ Christmas Bush, a neotropical weed which grows during the winters in our region. We are often asked if our Endi/Eri silk is a vegan silk? Technically, it is not. From our previous posts, you may already know that silk fibre is extracted from cocoons which, as a matter of fact is hardened saliva of the silkworms. Compositionally, it is an animal protein called fibroin which is secreted as saliva from the silk glands of the silkworms/larvae. That makes silk a by product of an animal. Hence, it does not pass the test of veganism. Now we do hear that Endi/Eri silk is often called the "Peace Silk" or "Ahimsa Silk". Please do check out our upcoming posts as we explore more on that! Sikiry’s pure eri silk fabric in verdant and relaxed Forest Green Graph-checks. Human eye is most sensitive to green hues, the reason being it lies in the middle of the color spectrum. You expend the least energy to perceive green and that explains why is it so calming. Indigo and turmeric ( sourced from women farmer groups from Meghalaya) were used as parent pigments to get this rich forest green colour that conjures the most refreshing image of an untamed and primeval resting woodland. Ever wondered what is silk made of? Silkworms use their saliva to spin cocoons around them. When exposed to air, these cocoons harden and are further processed to extract silk fibres. But, not all silk fibres are the same. One of the most crucial differences lie in whether these silk fibres are filaments ( which are long and continuous ) or staple (short and of finite length). This detail decides what happens to the silkworms, pupating inside the cocoons. In case of filaments, e.g. Mulberry silk, if the silkworms are to metamorphose and exit the cocoon as silk moths, it damages the silk fibre which can no longer be reeled/unwound. Whereas, if they are staple/short, e.g. Endi/Eri Silk, emergence of silk moths from the cocoons doesn’t affect the extraction of silk fibres as they can be spun into yarns. The birth of a motif is an evocative artistic expression, influenced by natural elements and/or embedded with social, religious or cultural meanings. Taking cues from our artisans, Sikiry team designed her own motif which is a stylized form of a castor bean plant at the time of harvesting. With deeply lobed glossy leaves and spiny fuschia red seed pods, the plant wears a dramatic look. We took some artistic liberty to create a soft summery mood in our pastel yarns. A motif is a thematic pattern usually repeated to underline its salience or to create a mood. You may find them within any form of an art piece be it music, literature and like in our imagery, as a textile art. Motifs that appear in different tribal attires form a defining part of our material culture and help in distinguishing one tribal group from the other. When woven, it renders a beautiful chromatic contrast and an embossed tactile feel to the fabrics. DM for queries. ❤️
Etymologically, Sikiry derives from the Boro (a tribal language in Assam) word for butterflies, Sikhri, perfectly encapsulating the brand's sartorial story. Sikiry reflects the kaleidoscopic vibrance of the conspicuously bright bugs through its organically dyed yarns. The soft texture of the fabric emulates the powdery touch of a butterfly's wings. Endi/ Eri silkmoth is believed to have originated in the Brahmaputra valley. It is abundantly found in the North East Region of India, specially in Assam and Meghalaya. Endi Silkmoth has been integral to the tribal ecosystem of these states. We will explore more on that soon! Night 1 !! Reaching Dimow ! After our sumptuous lunch with Tutu and her family ( belong to mising tribe )her BIL Gobind took us to the campsite which was some 5 km in the jungle . While walking we met these wonderful tribal people . The woman in the yellow attire is from Boro or Bodo tribe which is from Assam. the Boros have been farmers with strong tradition of fishery, poultry, piggery, with rice and jute cultivation, and betel nut plantation. They make their own clothing. We went to the next small village of Adi tribe which are natives of Arunachal Pradesh ! These people too are culturally very rich and self sufficient . They depend on nature for most of the things and earn their living by selling whatever that grows around on their land. Interestingly both these tribes live harmoniously next to each other . This part gets very cold in winters mainly because of dense forests and huge rivers. The men as well as women wear jackets and woolen clothes so as to keep themselves warm. The old man was the village head or Mukhiya and one interesting fact is that these tribal people solve all their disputes between themselves . They don’t need police or courts to sort it out for them. The old lady carrying a straw basket on her head was his wife . They were happy to pose for the pictures and she was kind enough to hand me her head basket just for the photo op 😊. The little girl in the picture was their grand daughter and she was fascinated by the smooth texture of my workout tights. After some time she gathered courage and ran her hands to feel it and then there was no stopping . she kept on running her hands on that smooth silky fabric and enjoy the feel of it !!! She was just fascinated by that silky feel . Don’t we take such things for granted ! couldn’t even imagine that one can get such pure joy at such simplest of thing !!! The very old lady in the last picture was working in her garden and was sure not very happy to see us . She was looking at us with suspicion .After this wonderful treck we reached our campsite . The 12th Bodoland Indigenous Games Festival, 2021, organized by the Bodoland Indigenous Games Association (BIGA) in association with Udalguri District BIGA at Totolapara field, Bhergaon in Udalguri district with three days mega traditional sporting events concluded on Monday at around 10 pm. Around 400 participants from all districts of BTC including players from Sonitpur and Biswanath took part. There had been competitions on Khomlainai, Gila, Daria Panta, Dongfang Bukunai, Batha, Khikhor, Daobo Aithing, Mwkhra, Dohob etc while Khomlainai tournament was held at state level competition. Udalguri district secured top position with highest number of gold medals in Khomlainai competition followed by Kokrajhar, Sonitpur and Chirang district respectively. Kokrajhar district received highest number of medals in all competitions. There had also been demonstration on certain tradional sports for preservation of indigenous games. It may be mentioned that the BIGA was formed in 2007 by late Chanakya Brahma after prolonged research of more than 22 years by him. He was the pioneer of revival of Bodo Indigenous games. He died in Beijing in China on October 31,2012 while he went to China to demonstrate Bodo Khomlainai (Traditional wrestling) for third time.
