SHOTS TAKEN IN SOCKS out my back door. I’m standing about twenty feet from my bed snapping this pano, out on the deck. We’ve pieced together a home up here in lightning fashion. It still feels weird and pointless to be taking photos, but after I snapped a few it was almost like therapy for the soul. This feeling isn’t new to me and the camera. I owe so much to being able to capture the emotions of the world I see through glass and electronics. It’s always reverberated in my bones and has always healed whatever it is I’ve gone through. The best part is dipping the bread into the sauce, a classic recipe for #mussels. A tasty meal ready in 15 minutes! It will take you longer to eat them than to prepare them! 1 kg mussels ½ dl olive oil 1 whole garlic ½ bunch of parsley 2 dl white wine pepper, no salt whatsoever 1 tbsp breadcrumbs Wash and clean the mussels so you pull out their beard. Chop garlic and parsley. Slightly heat up the olive oil in a pan, add garlic and mussels. Put a lid on the pan so the mussels can release the salt water. After a couple of minutes pour the white wine in, add parsley and pepper. Cook until all the mussels are open. Add the breadcrumbs at the end to make the sauce thicker. Shrimp with chickpeas #recipe Soak ½ kg of dried chickpeas the night before in loooooots of water /if you don’t feel adventurous, forget the soaking and just get the canned ones ½ kg peeled shrimp 100 ml tomato sauce or 1 tbs tomato paste 100 ml dessert wine 100 ml white wine 3 medium onions 1 whole garlic, finely chopped Half a bunch of parsley, chopped Cook the chickpeas (unless canned). Always with a lid on, in salted water, on low heat. Sauté onions in olive oil. Add tomato sauce and wine. Cook for about 15 minutes and add fish stock or chickpea water. Before adding shrimp, give them a quick turn in the pan, with olive oil, garlic and parsley. Make sure you season them well with salt and pepper. Stir them in with the chickpeas, remove from heat and let them sit for 5 minutes before serving. Yet, amidst the bustling spots I’ve frequented in recent months, this location stood out distinctly. (Want to know more about this location?! That had a more profound impact on me than just capturing these images. It was a simple reminder that I’m not just out here chasing shots, chasing moments... I’m out here exploring because that’s where I love to be and what I yearn to do more of. Although we caught the conditions just right and felt like we had this place to ourselves, it was experiencing this adventure that will have a lasting impact on me, more than these images. That’s a feeling I can’t share here... I can’t convey how it made me feel, so I can share what I saw... but it’s on you now to go out there and seek similar adventures so you can experience that ‘feeling’ of being free from the rules and confines of civilization and being hyper-focused on experiencing the moment. THE FRAGILITY of life is something that I've experienced both as a first on scene as a responder and now participant. I've seen death and have escaped it. I've helped support the evasion of it and watched those that have chosen it. I'm grateful for the depth I have and understanding in which even though life seems most the time pointless, I'm thankful to have it. This day holds a special place in my heart. 6 years ago the guy in the first photo left his job, his hometown, and everything he knew -- and took a giant leap of faith. 6 years ago I began my thruhike on the Pacific Crest Trail. I had never been backpacking before. I had been camping all of twice in my life. And had only hiked a total of 7 miles in one go. I knew how ridiculous it was, I knew it was a crazy long shot. But I also KNEW in my bones that I could do it. That all along there had always been some braver, more adventurous, resilient side of me begging to be released. And that by going, I was walking home to truer version of myself just waiting for me at the end of the trail. So I trusted that calling. The guy on the left had no idea his entire life was about to change. No idea how much he'd grow or how many more thruhiking miles he'd put on his feet or all the times where he would have to trust himself again and walk into the unknown. That once he started he'd never be able to go back to who he was or the life he led. I think if he could see the guy in the second photo 6 years later, he'd never believe that was him. But at the same time, maybe there'd be a deep, ancient knowing - a nod to whatever crazy, idiotic star that guides us. An honoring of how we ignored every other voice and choose only to listen to our deep resounding "Yes. Go." How we still do this. So today I quietly celebrate my gratitude towards my younger self for trusting himself enough to try. Because sometimes that's all it takes. And for anyone who needs to hear it: Comfort be damned, GO.
