I arrived at @whitesandsnps on a 105 degree day and the Ranger implored me not to venture too far, but even an abbreviated hike through the gypsum dunefield showcased this park’s uniqueness, solitude, and beauty. #WSNP is located in the #TularosaBasin and contains nearly half of the world’s largest gypsum dunefield. The science behind its formation is fascinating and rain, sun, and winds continue to shape the ever-changing landscape today. It’s remarkable how plants and animals have adapted to life here—several animals have evolved into white or off-white coloration to better their chances of survival (E.g. Bleached Earless Lizard, Sand Wolf Spider, White Moths). I knew little about the desert southwest when I moved here from the Midwest 5 years ago. But this mural seemed to touch the vibes I've found and love here. I remember my first time driving to work early on a Monday and saw these goofy adorable little #Roadrunners waddling up the hill in the road them take off as I approached. And one time I was right off the highway, cutting through a field at the #EPCC #Transmountain #Campus and saw some of those Jack-A-Lopes big as dogs. I nearly crashed. They're very cool. As the summer heat builds up, more and more cactus are coming into floweri are coming into flower. In the garden today the flowers of aka rainbow cactus 🌈 The plant is also native to northern Mexico and the southern United States. It grows in very porous soil with little to no organic matter. In my garden, I have used terracotta pots and cinder to grow it. I can't believe I actually found time for drawing. It's kinda nice to be back but my hands hurt so much so that I could barely hold a pencil (my hands are kinda burdened because of work). I could draw this better, especially the background, but I was too tired. And my drawing skills are actually dying. I don't know how to shade and color properly or even improve my skills. I'm still asking myself why I do art and why I would continue it. But enough with that, I'm hopeless case. (I will also try to shorten my long descriptions, I know they are meaningless). On the drawing you can see a pair of aplomado falcons (Falco femoralis),🦅a species that lives in South America. I watched a documentary about Mexico desert Chihuahua and a lot was said about these birds. With reintroduction program people try to reintroduce these falcons there again becuase they extinct because of destruction of habitat which are dry grasslands, savannahs and marshes.🌾The program is quite successful. Aplomado falcons hunt in pairs. With this technique are much more successful when they hunt small songbirds.🐦 Songbirds need extensive meadows and grasslands which are successful returning thanks to people who returned there to graze their cattle. You see, everything in nature is connected with people. Nowadays we destroy everything but I really admire my ancestors who lived with nature and respected the land so much. A great horned owl in her nest, with extra camouflage thanks to a perfectly placed feather☺️ I’ve been spending a lot of time with owls these days and I’ve been extremely joyous in our moments together. Always short in time and long in distance. These owls are highly adaptable and can thrive in diverse habitats ranging from forests and deserts to urban areas. Newman 6 is now online. This is a huge problem for our health and climate ➡️ Thursday, March 7th El Paso Electric Co. (EPE) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to promote the launch of a new fossil fuel project–a 228 MW fracked gas turbine (Newman 6). This “Newman 6” is the sixth gas turbine El Paso Electric has built at the Newman Gas Plant located in northeast El Paso and Chaparral, New Mexico. “We live less than two miles from Newman 6. We see it from our bedroom window every morning. Me and my wife have suffered troubling respiratory illnesses since moving close to the gas plant. Despite our best efforts to oppose this increase in pollution, it is devastating to see Newman 6 online.” Dr. David Garcia, Chaparral Coalition on Health and Environment. ➡️ Community heavily opposes Newman 6. Amanecer People’s Project and frontline residents closest to the gas plant (including the Chaparral Coalition on Health and Environment) fiercely challenged El Paso Electric’s air permit to build this gas turbine. ➡️ Newman 6 means more pollution and climate destruction Even before the addition of this 6th turbine, El Paso Electric’s Newman Gas Plant was a leading driver of pollution in the region. They emit toxins linked to asthma, respiratory illness, reproductive issues, and cancer (Nitrogen Oxides, Particulate Matter, Volatile Organic Compounds and more). Currently El Paso Electric emits 2.3 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2e). This new gas plant only worses El Paso Electric’s pollution. ➡️ El Paso ratepayers bear the brunt of Newman 6 The company spent $211 million of our ratepayer dollars to build this fossil fuel project. Originally claiming its construction would cost $163 million, the company is $48 million over-budget. They are charging average El Paso rate-payers for this difference via monthly bill surcharges. ➡️ The fight continues Newman 6 was not inevitable. Thanks to climate justice campaigning, their permit was nearly rejected.
