We spend a lot of time talking about goals & less time talking about the values that underpin them. So, what are values? Values are the beliefs & principles that govern our life. They give us guidance & motivate us. We don’t “accomplish” values, we live by them. They are a central part of who we are. Values exist in the here and now. They are dynamic - they change as we change & as life changes. Values are freely chosen & unique to each of us. Values are intrinsically rewarding. There is something in living a value that gives us a sense of purpose & meaning. We all have moments in life when our values get lost, neglected, or forgotten. Generally, talking & thinking about values isn’t common practice. The goal in ACT is to help people to act on their values mindfully, purposefully, & flexibly - in the present moment. Many people living with chronic pain deal with a lot of occupational losses & remoteness from values. It’s common to get fused with past versions of self & to want things to just “get back to normal.” Exploring the values that underpin the activities we enjoy but can’t currently do can help us to set new goals & start taking meaningful action. A personal example: I played soccer at a fairly competitive level throughout my formative years. It was a big part of my identity. At 26, I was forced to quit soccer due to chronic MSK pain. I struggled to “accept” this & was angry about it for a long time. When I discovered ACT, I had given up on ever playing again. But, it gave me new insight into my experience. Exploring what I valued about the game helped me to understand what it gave to me - it offered belonging, community, fitness, passion, self-expression, & so much more. Once I understood this, I was able to start to imagine new ways that I could enact these values. Fast forward 8 years & I’m back in the actual game. This won’t always be the case - I’ve let go of many other things over the years. The goal is to work on our ability to flexibly adapt to life’s challenges with self-compassion & to make choices that align with our values. #values #act #commitedaction #chronicpain #ot #occupationaltherapy #wpg

Engageret handling og "hjemmearbejde" er en stor og vigtig del af ACT og med god grund. Der er en del forskning der indikerer, at hvis man giver klienterne små adfærdsopgaver mellem samtalerne, så vil klienterne hurtigere opleve forbedring. Hvad kan man så gøre i de situationer, hvor klienterne har svært ved at gøre noget anderledes mellem samtalerne? Det giver jeg mit bud på her. I den sidste slide beskriver jeg en af mine favoritøvelser i forhold til motivere klienterne til at lave "hjemmearbejde".

Who is Bountiful Bristol? We would like to start introducing some of the people behind Bountiful Bristol. Firstly a welcome to Rachel our Project Lead 🌱 Rachel lives in south bristol and has an allotment @hwdaa_allotments. She began a local donation scheme and then officially joined Bountiful Bristol this summer. Her work background is as a psychologist working in homelessness. ☀️ After completing a permaculture design certificate with @shiftbristol she has been following her heart back to working in closer connection with plants and the land that nourishes us. FOOD FOR THOUGHT FRIDAY: Confidence. Feeling sure of yourself and your abilities is the foundation of confidence, however it is quite literally something I feel like I can’t grasp onto. Common things I ask/tell myself include - There is someone better. - I am going to embarrass myself. - What if I’m not qualified? - What if I fail? - What if I’m missing the mark? - What if I’m doing something wrong? - What are they going to say about me? These are very consistent conversations in my day to day life as a student, a volleyball coach, and as a human being in society. What I’ve noticed over time is the common denominator: I’m predicting the future without understanding my current position and fear what others will think about MY journey. We will never understand what’s going to happen, because we are simply in a different moment: RIGHT NOW. I can’t sit here and tell you I’ve got it all figured out now, because truthfully I’m still struggling with the idea of confidence. Although I’m not where I want to be YET, I’m working to get there. After sitting with the feeling of insecurity, I decided to do some research about how to improve my confidence & here’s what I found. I challenge you today to create a committed action that will push you towards your goal this week. Mine is I will spend one hour this weekend learning about how I can be the reach my potential as a coach this season. I’m not committing to being the best coach I can be this season, but that is my goal and I will take reasonable and actionable steps to get there this weekend. A commitment is action. 🏃‍♂️ The word commitment is a noun but it’s the kind of noun that requires action. We want to see some kind of behavior happen if you are committed to something. 🧠 When you’re committed to some kind of task, process or direction, you keep moving in that direction with your actions. And even if there is an obstacle coming up, you keep moving with your actions through that problem, over that problem, around or under that problem. Action is necessary to show that you are making a commitment.🌿 Action can help us live a rich, full and meaningful life. One where we are less bothered by anxiety and worry. In 2018 I got a DM on IG from a local woman saying to sign up as my first ever 1:1 Client. I had no “business” but I was building the vision of it. I was a match for a Client who had a parallel vision I was showing her ALIGNMENT and FREEDOM - the same feeling she had, and we both were making it our forever. Here’s why it worked: I was devoted to showing up and evolving, being seen and courageously standing fo my beliefs I had NO evidence it was “working” yet, but I didn’t stop I didn’t have any fancy brand, no assistant, no funnels….it was ME. I was trial blazing alignment, online work, and shared my integration process + life �She desired what I was showing. She was COMMITTED, she KNEW she was made for more and was already at a place of trust in her vision before she asked to work with me. She was at a level of personal power than most others. She was vulnerable, honest, raw, and wilful. She did the work. It wasn’t easy. She worked her whole life for her 9-5 and then realized, she wanted to be a present Mom, and work her own hours…she knew she had gifts that weren’t being seen. She worked on her confidence, she has wildly transformed her entire life, her relationship, her finances, her connections, her opportunities, her leadership, her boundaries. We’ve both evolved lifetimes in a few short years….with nothing that “looked” like it should work, skyrocketed for both of us. I went first. I showed her the possibilities and supported her alignment. Life gets to change. Business gets to “work” Risks get to be rewarded ….it’s all about how courageous you are to have a vision, admit the vision and THEN take action relentlessly to the pull, the desires, the vision you have for yourself. She’s watched my life transform and go through highs and lows… She was able to take power from seeing the success and reality of success, and the process of transformation, and apply the trust in her own life. And recently she offered ME an amazing opportunity! Never settle. Don’t let go. Quit the narrative that you need to be “somewhere” before it works. It only works or doesn’t, because of you.

It is hard to know what to say sometimes and that's OK. In fact, it is ok to say that too! Being kind, gentle and warm is a good start point. We can say instead: 1. "I think I would feel similar too, if I were in your position" 2. "This sounds like it is really difficult, would you like to talk or would like to focus on solutions?" 3. "I am sorry you feel so sad AND it is ok to feel this, I am here for you" Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to say the perfect thing! Spring arrived! Yesterday... it's having another rest day today though. After a lot of 'wintering', down time and baggy jumpers. I'm feeling rejuvenated and inspired. Do you find yourself every now and then talking yourself out of things? Like you have a good idea or something that you want to do, but then you come up with a myriad of reasons for why it’s not a good idea, and then you never get around to pursuing it? 🧠Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. 😓Everyone has feelings of anxiety at some point in their life. For example, you may feel worried and anxious about going to a party, having a job interview or sitting an exam. 📈But some people find it hard to control their worries. Their feelings of anxiety are more constant and can often affect their daily lives. 🤯GAD causes us to feel anxious about a wide range of situations and issues, rather than 1 specific event. So lots of worries about lots of different things. 🕯️People with GAD feel anxious most days and often struggle to remember the last time they felt relaxed. ♻️As soon as 1 anxious thought is resolved, another may appear about a different issue. We get stuck in a worry cycle and find it hard to break out. GAD can cause both psychological and physical symptoms, such as: ✨Tension headaches ✨Feeling restless or worried ✨Having trouble concentrating or sleeping ✨Jaw tension ✨Dizziness ✨Heart palpitations Although feelings of anxiety at certain times are completely normal, you might want to seek extra support from your GP or a therapist if this is affecting your daily life. 🤝While friendships are vital to our health and happiness, they can be complex and difficult at times. 🤚If you need to establish more boundaries with your friends, it all begins with the confidence to say “no.” ⭐If you’re a people pleaser, this can be so difficult because you want to make everyone happy. 🧠There also could be some personal work involved. 🤔 Sometimes anxiety doesn’t show up in the way we expect. It is all ok! 🧠 It is due to our fight or flight reaction. We have an in-built threat response system and when we are under threat or perceived threat, adrenaline is released. 📈 This adrenaline is needed to put us into a state of readiness to either fight or flee to keep ourselves alive. It is a human survival response. ❤️ Our heart rate and blood pressure increase so that we can get blood to our bigger muscles fast. 👁️ Our vision changes to become more focused on the threat. In today's world, we rarely need to escape an immediate threat to life but our brain still sees 'threats' in deadlines or conflicts, and thus our fight or flight goes off even when it isn't a life-threatening situation. 🧠 In ACT we look at accepting all of our emotions rather than trying to fight them off or get rid of them. ⭐ We need to shift our energy from getting rid of emotions and start putting our energy into making room for emotions and building our lives. 😵 Of course, this is easier said than done, but over time we can become less fearful of, and more accepting of our anxiety, and in turn, that can mean it bothers us less. Want to know more about ACT? Away moves are actions we take that are NOT in line with our values. Sometimes they feel great, but this is only usually short term. For example: drinking alcohol to relieve stress. This might help in the short term but it might not align with our value of health. We know deep down that this doesn't align with our values, but it is hard to stop doing them. OR We might work too hard but we would like to be prioritising time with our family. Connection👭 There is strong evidence that indicates that feeling close to, and valued by, other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world. 2. Give to others🎁 It could be small acts of kindness towards other people, or larger ones like volunteering in your local community. Don't give too much and don't give over your resources or capacity. 3. Take Notice 🧘 Reminding yourself to ‘take notice’ can strengthen and broaden awareness. Studies have shown that being aware of what is taking place in the present directly enhances your well-being and savouring ‘the moment’ can help to reaffirm your life priorities. 4. Keep Learning 📕 Even if you feel like you do not have enough time, or you may not need to learn new things, there are lots of different ways to bring learning into your life. 5. Be physically active 🏃 If you're a wheelchair user or have disabilities- read fitness advice for wheelchair users. Carers and physiotherapists can also help with this. In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy part of our focus is on making towards moves. 🧠 ✨Towards moves are actions we take in line with things that feel right to us. ✨This doesn't mean they always feel good though! For example: a towards move might be having a difficult conversation with a friend in order to sort out conflict. We know deep down that this aligns with our values but it won't be easy ✨Towards moves can be big (e.g. quitting your job)or small (pausing to take a breath) ✨In ACT we can also call towards moves 'committed action', hence Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
