About a month ago we were in the thick of the CrossFit Open. Now, if you don't pay attention to all things CrossFit, you might not know that through these workouts is how people advance toward becoming the fittest on Earth. Out of 343,000+ athletes to participate in the three Open workouts we had 5 of our own athletes place in the top 25% of their divisions... that is AMAZING!! Adriane, Greg, Leah, Ryan and Shelly now have the opportunity to complete the quarterfinals workouts coming up in a couple of weeks. This is no small feat. Make sure you congratulate them the next time you see them and maybe come cheer them on during one (or more) of their multiple workouts. They will have between April 17-22 to complete them. "I started coaching because I am a helper. At my gym, I didn't think I could coach CrossFit. I was fearful of it, but knew I had a passion for helping people and felt that I needed to try. I was quickly encouraged by coaches, athletes, and the affiliate owners of CrossFit Bemidji." "The people are what I like most about being a coach! I have met so many great people at CrossFit. ✨ Win Wednesday ✨ Heather A. is a yoga instructor and mom of two boys. She joined us in May of this year and in just 5 months she has noticed so many amazing changes in herself! "I was already in pretty good shape, but I was tired of home workouts and looking to challenge myself. My primary focus was gaining more strength and maintaining bone density as I age.. I feel like my posture has improved, my grip strength is better, my recovery time is shorter, my resting heart rate is lower. Plus, I love how I feel after a really tough workout - there’s nothing like it!" "CrossFit is something I can see myself doing for the long haul. Rounding out Brachial Plexus Injury Awareness Week, Amy shares her story about joining CFB (it's a must-read): 👇👇 We asked: why CrossFit? "Honestly, it was a last-ditch effort to get out of a chronic pain cycle that was depleting my mental health and stealing away my ability to participate in my everyday activities. I saw a friend get completely off opioids and begin living his life again despite living in massive amounts of pain. Through his experience, I figured I had to give CrossFit a try before giving up my career as a pediatric occupational therapist and losing all of my hobbies." What has CrossFit done for you? "It has given me my life back. I am no longer a victim of debilitating chronic pain! I have gained so much endurance in my injured arm, it has become so much more functional. For example, I never had enough endurance to carry a gallon of milk across my kitchen. Now I can carry it for at least a football field but I can do so much more (like installing windows and hammering in nails!). CrossFit Bemidji has become a wonderful social outlet. I have gained mentors and friends that I never knew I needed. I have also gained more self-confidence and a healthier lifestyle. I won't lie and say it's been an easy journey because it hasn't been easy! There have been workouts I have cried through or cried about after but there have also been workouts where I have celebrated big wins after completing a new skill, lifting a personal best, or performing better than anticipated. It’s all about progress and making my life just a little better at the time. Despite wanting progress to equal perfection and wanting it to always be moving in a straight line, progress doesn’t work that way most of the time. Sometimes progress is taking a step back and looking at the situation through a new lens. Sometimes, progress is reaching out to a coach for a new perspective, sometimes it’s learning to be ok with a set back, and sometimes it’s kicking butt and taking names." Rolling through Wednesday we'd like to share about Amy's upcoming competition 👇 "One thing that I have set my mind to is competing in the sport of CrossFit with other people like myself who were dealt the adaptive hand in life. WheelWOD is an organization that aims to bring adaptive awareness and competitions to all who are interested in adaptive CrossFit. The WheelWod Games are the ultimate adaptive competition." From WheelWOD, “Athletes from all around the world will compete across these divisions for the title of the fittest in their classification. The test of fitness will include Functional Fitness, Strongman, Gymnastics, Endurance, Weightlifting, and many more! These games will have 10+ events over 3 days and will be definitely the toughest challenge the athletes have faced yet. Athletes will qualify as the best in their divisions, through WheelWOD IOQ, Wodapalooza Florida, WODACELONA Spain, Seadog Summer Showdown Florida, Black Challenge Mexico, Oceania Throwdown Australia, and Semi-Finals of the WheelWOD Games Qualifier. This will be a full year of opportunity to make these games and in December the fittest will take the competition floor to show the world what they can do!” Amy said, "I qualified via the online qualifiers where I completed the workouts with my husband by my side (counting reps to keep me honest and videotaping for official judging). Coach Amy's Brachial Plexus Injury story: "When I was born, my right shoulder got stuck on my mother’s pelvic bone. This caused a birthing emergency and some mistakes were made that led to excessive traction being applied to my right brachial plexus nerves and the breaking of my left humerus. There are 5 nerves that make up the brachial plexus. Two of my 5 nerves were pulled out of my spinal cord and the other three were either torn farther away from the spine or badly stretched. This damage resulted in functional deficits that included a loss of feeling in most of my hand and limited strength and active range of motion in my right arm." "Growing up, I was the only person I knew with a bum arm. I did not meet another person with a BPI until I was 18 years old! As a child, many activities took me a little more time to problem-solve and work around my limited function. There were also activities that others decided would be too challenging for me and wouldn't allow me to participate or urged me not to participate in." "As an adult, I have decided to use my experience to potentially help someone else. Despite being told it would be too hard for me, I became an occupational therapist and, later, a CrossFit athlete and trainer. While my limitations provide me with many challenges, I refuse to accept that I cannot do something that I set my mind to." Brachial Plexus Injury Awareness Week is upon us and we'd like to do our best to inform you about what it is with the help of our very own athlete and coach, Amy! She conquers anything she puts her mind to despite of her injury 🙌 We'll start the week off by telling you what a Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) is. The brachial plexus is a network of nerves that control all of the movement and feeling of your arm from the shoulder all the way to the fingertips. Every person has two brachial plexus network of nerves. One on each side of your neck. A BPI occurs when these nerves are damaged or severed. This injury can be caused at birth or due to blunt trauma. ✨ Athlete Spotlight ✨ Rachel J. is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) with Sanford here in Bemidji. She did a brief stint at CFB back in 2020 (pre-COVID) during a grad school rotation and after moving back here, was able to re-start at the beginning May of 2023. 😴 "When I started this year, I was 10 months postpartum and recovering from a C-section, so I had additional abdominal weakness and scar tissue along with the typical postpartum recovery. I had suffered from low back pain on and off following an injury in 2017 and would occasionally take ibuprofen for relief. I often used ice/heat and various pain relief creams (icy hot, etc.). I was consistently fairly tired, but attributed that to having an infant at home." 👀 "After completing each CrossFit workout, I feel so strong and capable of accomplishing whatever goals I set. This definitely has given me a boost of confidence and self-esteem. Although the number on the scale hasn’t really changed, but my pre-pregnancy clothes fit better than before.. I can see more tone and definition in my arms and legs." 👀 💦 "I also love that I am setting a good example for my family, especially my daughter, in the importance of showing up for yourself and taking care of your body. Additionally, I feel more motivation to not “undo” what I did at the gym, so I find myself making better nutritional choices and drinking more water." 🫶 We've said it before, but we'll say it again: we 💕 LOVE 💕 seeing the confidence that our athletes have gained (even after just a few months of being with us!).. 🕯 International Overdose Awareness Day is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died from overdose, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind. While we recognize today as International Overdose Awareness Day, we will also use tomorrow's WOD to serve as an opportunity to reflect on these people, their families and they challenges they all face. ✨ Our spotlight this week is on Dawn E. She has been an athlete at CFB for one year, has participated in our gym challenges, and has made incredible progress toward her goals! 🤷‍♀️ She says, "I was always one to start a program, like beach body, and never finish. I would get bored or lose motivation easily. I wanted to workout, but would find some reason not to. Now I look forward to that hour in the gym. I know that even on the days I would normally try to talk myself out of, once I show up, I will be all in. No one ever regrets that." ✅ "If you are just starting out I would say you made it through the hardest part! Once you make the commitment to bettering yourself you will not want to stop. I was terrified to walk through the doors but I have never regretted it. Some days are frustrating when you aren’t able to do something, but it gives you more of a reason to show up and put the work in. It’s a pretty great feeling when you finally accomplish something you have been working hard to achieve. It is also amazing to watch everyone around you crush their goals as well." 🤩 "CrossFit has made working out fun again. It is a part of my routine that I will not give up. I have also been guided on how to properly fuel my body to meet my goals I am very happy with the progress I have made over the past year. I have lost 6% body fat and I am starting to see some pretty muscles. That is a definite confidence boost.. 🥑🍳This is one of my favorite recipes – it’s indulgent but still good for you – and even more importantly, it’s delicious! TIP: It’s not just for breakfast 😉 Sriracha Avocado-Egg Toast (serves 1) 1 tsp olive oil 1 egg 1 slice of sprouted grain bread ¼ avocado, mashed Sriracha sauce 1 Tbsp hemp hearts (optional) Salt and pepper, to taste Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Crack open the egg and put it in the pan and cook until it’s sunny side up. While it’s cooking, place your slice of bread in a toaster. Once the toast is ready, spread the mashed avocado on it. Top the toast with the egg and a drizzle of sriracha sauce. If using, sprinkle the hemp hearts on top. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately. Yum! 🧑‍🍳This super healthy pumpkin pudding makes a delicious anytime snack. It’s also great for refueling after a workout. You can make up a batch ahead of time so they are ready to go whenever you need a sweet(ish) treat – top with walnuts just before serving. Pumpkin-Vanilla Pudding (serves 1) 6 oz (170 grams) nonfat Greek yogurt ⅓ cup (80 grams) 100% pumpkin puree Dash of cinnamon Splash of vanilla 1 tsp maple syrup or honey (to taste) 1 Tbsp toasted chopped walnuts Combine the yogurt, pumpkin, cinnamon, vanilla, and maple syrup in a small bowl and mix until well combined. ✨ Rebecca has been a member of CrossFit Bemidji since the summer of 2019 and working on the base movements of push ups and pull ups. ✨ She says, "being super persistent and working on both movements in and away from the gym I feel like has really helped. I have been trying to get more upper body strength movements in as well to hopefully improve on the quantity I am able to do of each movement." ✨ Her advice to you is "just keep trying. Trust the process it happens very quickly over a long period of time! I never understood that until one day it just happened naturally!" ✨ In regards to mastery of these skills she said, "I feel like you can always improve on form more or the quantity you are able to do." ✨ She's really been knocking these movements out lately and we're so excited to continue watching her progress. ✨ 15 year old Greer has been working so hard on her handstand walks for the last year and here is what she has to say about it: "I have not MASTERED it yet, because every skill can ALWAYS use a little more improvement. But I have progressed. I practiced each day for five minutes hand stand walking to the wall in my warmup or after the workout. I would see how far I could go by distancing myself from the wall. Then I would have someone hold a pvc pipe as my target so I could get more comfortable without the wall. I struggled for a while with not using my core and bending my back. But just doing regular CrossFit strengthened my core and wall walks helped with having a strong back and core." Her advice for someone looking to work on this skill is "only practice for five minutes with rest periods in that. If you don't, you will stress muscles which will slow down your process. I had to learn to not over do it or else I would stress my wrists." ✨ This just goes to show you that if you keep working on something (even for as little as 5 minutes per day) you will improve. 🇺🇸Our Memorial Weekend Murph WOD will be held on Saturday, May 27 with heats starting at 7am! 🙌This event is open to the public and all drop-in fees will go to our local DAV (Disabled American Veterans) chapter. 👕We will have some pretty cool shirts for sale for $40, with proceeds going to the DAV.. there is a limited quantity so make sure to come in early! 💵We are hoping to have a DAV representative here the day of the event to accept any free-will donations. 💪If you're not sure what the Murph WOD is here's a little rundown for you: Rx is a 1 mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 air squats, 1 mile run with a weighted vest (20/14lb) partitioned (meaning split the reps) however you choose. If you're looking for an Rx+ version you can throw on a weighted vest and do it unpartitioned.. If you're looking for a Scaled version try it all with no vest or grab a partner and split up your reps.. Come join us at 8:30am on Sunday Jan. 8th! We will be completing a special workout in honor of our December Fundraiser for the PLAA project! Here's the challenge: Seated with hip- 4 min AMRAP (will complete barbell and rowing movements from a chair) 10 hang snatches with barbell (abmat on lap for safety) 85/45 5 cal bike Rest 2 min Upper 1 pt - 4 min AMRAP (will not be able to use one arm throughout the entire workout) 15 Wall Balls 14/10 10 cal Row Rest 2 min Lower 1 pt - 4 min AMRAP (will not be able to use one leg throughout the entire workout) 10 Goblet squats to 20” box 35/25 20 Singles Rest 2 min Sensory - vision - 4 min AMRAP (blindfolded with a guide if desired) 20 Box step ups 20” 15 abmat sit ups Score will be combined rounds and reps. 👉The above workout showcases 4 of the 8 current disability categories that are able to compete in the Adaptive CrossFit Open. 👉These 4 categories were chosen because they are the easier disability categories to simulate.
