Detour 13.3.24 Another day off from the walk dedicated to exploring my other passions of cinema and photography. What a nightlight to discover the Busan International Film Festival library and a photography gallery/library called GoEun museum of photography. Really worth the trip to Busan alone for these two gems. At the BIFF library, it’s possible to browse an extensive collection of text based material pertaining to film (mostly in Korean but with some English), listen to records from soundtrack composers such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and watch a film from the extensive and hard to come by films that have played at previous years of the festival in a private booth. Following this, the GoEun museum of photography contains the best library of photography books I’ve seen anywhere, not just in Korea. A collection of rare domestic books signed by the authors are available to browse freely, just incredible. The staff are all really kind and the gallery space presented in a beautiful and tasteful style. Some new additions to the VB library! A couple of new grabs from Arrow Video, including another Dan Duryea feature Black Angel! He was always more of a supportive role but he leads this classic thriller. And of course the new Conan Chronicles UHD set! I haven't seen either of these movies since I was very young. Looking forward to diving back into those! The SyFy channel's Dune & Children of Dune were my gateways into the sands of Arrakis when I was in my late teens. With Dune: Part Two only days away, I was excited to add to the collection that which got me into the series from the beginning. Spectacularly crafted by our movie-mad Librarians, each Curated Collection shines a light on overlooked and underappreciated gems in the library’s collection of physical media, celebrating our knowledge of, and devotion to cinema. Themed SILVER SCREEN, our first of the year pays homage to the (sadly near-vanished) ornate Picture Palaces of the golden age of Hollywood. Recreated in miniature and hand-painted in rich colours, this Art Deco/Egyptian revival inspired “Cathedral to motion pictures” is crowded with "more stars than there are in heaven" (as was the motto of M-G-M at the time), the screen frozen on Norma Desmond’s famous “close-up” from that camp classic, Sunset Boulevard. Alongside this fantasy, we've gathered a range of films and books all about Tinseltown and, the glamour and horror of the dream factory. In my research on these lavish theatres I read that some had ceilings adorned with glittering starry skies or blue with clouds... a total escape that transported the audience into a magical realm of make-believe.
