79 years ago this week Private Desmond Doss single-handedly saved around 75 soldiers who would have otherwise been abandoned to death. He did so without firing a single bullet. God had placed in him a conviction to serve without killing, and became a medic. Those around him saw his "conscientious objection" as cowardice and a threat until he proved his courage on the battlefield. What they deemed counter-intuitive, foolish, reckless, and impossible ended up saving their lives. 🌱 Oglądaliście „Przełęcz Ocalonych”? Ja nie, ale na długo przed pojawieniem się tego filmu czytałam książkę „Nietypowy bohater”. Parę dni temu znów wpadła w moje ręce, więc postanowiłam odświeżyć sobie historię Desmonda Dossa, żołnierza, który nigdy nie dotknął karabinu. I znów, jak kiedyś, lata temu, poruszył mnie jego życiorys i wiara, jakiej trzymał się w najtrudniejszych momentach. Desmond odmawiał z powodów religijnych dotykania broni i zabijania przeciwników. Przez całą służbę wojskową był sanitariuszem, ratował życie wielu żołnierzy, zarówno rodaków jak i wrogów, a ze sobą zawsze miał Biblię. Na początku wyśmiewany przez kolegów, potem zyskał ich zaufanie i szacunek. Czytając podziwiałam go za odwagę. Wręcz niewiarygodna historia. Actor Highlight Day ❤️ - Hacksaw Ridge - I saw this a few years ago and really enjoyed the film and Andrew's performance it. The fact that it was based off of a true story was mindblowing!. He played Desmond Doss, a man in the army but who refuses to fire a gun, so he becomes a medic who goes on to pull off a miraculous accomplishment. He was honestly so good in this film, it showed the different forms of strength that there are, as he wasn't physically imposing, but mentally he was unbreakable, never compromising his convictions and it makes you respect the character so much because of that ability to stand up for what they believe in. He gave such an emotional and heartfelt performance that i was stunned he never won awards for it!. - Tick Tick Boom - This was a recent watch for me and i absolutely loved it. Which is rare too because i usually avoid musicals, but i loved every moment and song of this one. Andrew played Jonathan Larson in basically a biographical performance. As he transformed his look and mannerisms to match Jonathan's which were spectacularly done. It was another one where i was blown away by his performance, the sheer scope of it, there is moments you are mad at him, feel for him, to hoping for him. I thought he really nailed the role and showed the unique personality and kind of person artists have to be to succeed. That relentless dedication. But too, there were massively emotional moments in the film, one where he performs in the rain after finding out devestating news about a friend in particular really got to me. - The Amazing Spider-Man - I really enjoyed Andrew's portrayal of Peter Parker aka Spiderman. I think its something he brings to each role he does, he just has this genuineness about him and natural charm where you can't not like him. It was also too one of the darker Spiderman stories especially given what happened to MJ. He got to show that incredible emotional side he has to his acting and that ability to portray just a broken man, that gets audiences really emotional. He is truly a brilliant actor and one that never fails to deliver brilliant performances!.

I was a driver for Riley’s field trip to the zoo today. I had a little free time and visited Desmond Doss’s grave close by. I was just struck by how different this America is compared to his America. Now we have men dressed like women in the military and people shouting death to America in our own cities. Nobody cares about our laws anymore. Political division isn’t civil anymore. In just a short amount of time the country doesn’t even resemble what it used to be. I look at men like Desmond Doss and people in his generation with great admiration. I've recently discovered Desmond Doss's story and I became obsessed with it. I've watch the movie twice in two days and I couldn't get Desmond out of my head. Being the good bookworm that I am I decided to go look for the book and here we are. 140 pages of Desmond's life. You'll get his childhood, the reasons he is a vegetarian, the story of his faith, his love life, the war and many other subjects. Desmond was a religious man and he attributes what happened in Hawkshaw Ridge to God so you won't get to read much about it in this book, it left me a bit wanting. But it is really a book to read if, like me, you can't get Desmond out of your life after seeing the movie or after learning about what he did. Harold Doss June 19 1922- March 13 2007 USS Lindsey Known for being the brother of Desmond Doss World War 2: Harold or "HAL", enlisted in the Navy. Served in Europe. The ship was also in the Pacific : In 1945 was a crew member on the destroyer USS Lindsey which was involved in two Iwo Jima landings and in the Okinawa campaign. Ship was severely damaged by two direct hits by kamikaze aircraft April 12, 1945. For a couple of days, Harold was listed as KIA in error. Was not wounded. Que baita filme! Acabo de assistir o filme “Até o último Homem”, que retrata a história do Soldado americano, Desmond Doss, durante a Batalha de Okinawa. O Soldado Doss, seguindo seus princípios e crenças, se alistou ao exército em um período de Guerra e enfrentou seus superiores se negando a tocar em uma arma. Afirmando que ele estava se alistando para SALVAR vidas e não tirá-las. Obviamente enfrentou resistência interna além de desconfianças (os colegas não confiavam em ir pra Guerra com alguém que não estivesse disposto a matar por eles). Ele seguiu firme no que acreditava e no seu verdadeiro propósito de vida e sem jamais ter tocado em uma arma, salvou mais de 75 colegas de farda (incluindo seu comandante que também o desdenhava). Certamente um filme que nos faz refletir sobre nosso propósito e nossos valores, e o quanto realmente estamos dispostos a “pagar altos preços” por conta deles. Desmond Doss February 7, 1919 – March 23, 2006 Company B 1st Battalion 307th Infantry Regiment 77th Infantry Division Known for being the only conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor for saving an estimated 75 men at Okinawa, WW2 His father, William Thomas Doss (17 September 1893- 21 November 1989) served in the Army during World War 1, he fought in the Battle of Belleau wood, and was awarded the Silver Star, and he later suffered from PTSD. Desmond's mother raised him as a devout Seventh-day Adventist and instilled Sabbath-keeping, nonviolence, and vegetarianism in his upbringing. World War 2: Doss was employed as a joiner at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. He chose military service, despite being offered a deferment because of his shipyard work. He chose military service. Doss refused to carry a weapon into combat because of his personal beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist against killing. He consequently became a medic. While serving with his platoon in 1944 in Guam and the Philippines, he was awarded two Bronze Star Medals with a "V" device, for exceptional valor in aiding wounded soldiers under fire. Medal of Honor at Okinawa: During the Battle of Okinawa, he saved the lives of 50–100 wounded infantrymen atop the area known by the 96th Division as the Maeda Escarpment or Hacksaw Ridge. Doss was wounded four times in Okinawa, and was evacuated on May 21, 1945, aboard the USS Mercy. Doss suffered a left arm fracture from a sniper's bullet while being carried back to Allied lines and at one point had seventeen pieces of shrapnel embedded in his body after attempting to kick a grenade away from himself and his comrades. After WW2: After the war, Doss initially planned to continue his career in carpentry, but extensive damage to his left arm made him unable to do so. In 1946, Doss was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which he had contracted on Leyte. He underwent treatment for five and a half years – losing a lung and five ribs – before being discharged from the hospital in August 1951 with 90% disability. After being hospitalized for difficulty breathing, Doss died on March 23, 2006.
