Egg labels can be very deceiving. I often see customers returning “cage-free” egg cartons, which I appreciate because they can be reused. However, I felt the need to explain exactly what these terms mean because I only understood them after I started raising chickens. “Cage-Free” basically means that chickens are packed tightly into a warehouse, creating a very stressful situation. These chickens do not have any access to the outdoors and are fed a soy, GMO diet of low-quality layer feed. While these eggs are cheaper, their quality is just as low as traditional $1 dozen Walmart eggs. It’s best to stay away from them. “Free Range” is slightly better, but not significantly when you delve deeper into what that actually means. Chickens labeled as “free range” may only have access to “some outdoors,” which could actually mean just a small hole to peek out of—essentially the same as cage-free. The best eggs you can get from a traditional grocery store are “Pasture-Raised eggs”. These chickens are not kept in crowded spaces and are outdoors all day. However, it’s important to note that all eggs from the grocery store are sprayed with chemicals to prevent the spread of diseases since they are mass-produced. When an egg is sprayed with a chemical, the protective bloom is removed, which prevents bacteria from entering the egg. This is why all grocery store eggs must be refrigerated and have a short shelf life. Our eggs are never washed, ensuring the bloom remains intact until you are ready to use them. Understand that labels are marketing tools! Eggs you purchase from a grocery store are mass-produced, and when food becomes mass-produced, the quality diminishes dramatically. I really love differently colored eggs. All of our hens lay their own, signature eggs. I carefully cultivated our egg-laying flock to include hens who lay all the colors, occasionally breeding them myself to get unique colors. Why? My husband thinks I'm a little nutty for caring so much about the colors of our eggs, but it genuinely brings me joy. I find it amazing that a chicken can create something that is beautiful. Its a fun hobby to collect different hens and have so many neat looking eggs. I enjoy sharing our pretty eggs with family and friends. I like to go out to the coop to collect all the differently colored eggs. It makes me happy. But the truly amazing thing here, is that there is no evolutionary reason wharsoever for egg shells to contain pigment. It doesn't benefit a growing chick, doesn't make the egg more nutritious, doesn't matter for any reason other than being something beautiful to look at. The God of the universe cares about little things. He cares about things that make us happy. He had the forethought to design things of whimsy and merriment, for no other reason than our enjoyment. He cares about our happiness. Before time even began, he saw your face, knew your name, and designed bits of the universe because he knew they would make your life better. Friends, that is an amazing God.

My ducks are great at leaving quite a mess on their eggs, so let's talk DIRTY EGGS 🥚 When an egg is laid, a protective layer covering the shell called a "bloom" is left behind. This prevents any bacteria from getting inside the egg. The bloom keeps the egg fresh for up to 30 days at room temperature - as long as it's not washed!
