Transit to Trails is important for several reasons: Accessibility: Many outdoor recreation areas, such as parks, trails, and natural reserves, are located outside urban centers. Not everyone has access to a car, so providing public transit options allows more people, especially those in urban areas, to access these natural spaces without needing personal transportation. Reduced Environmental Impact: Encouraging people to use public transit instead of driving individually to outdoor recreation areas helps reduce carbon emissions and overall environmental impact. It promotes sustainable transportation methods and aligns with efforts to combat climate change. Equity: Access to nature and outdoor recreation should be equitable for all individuals regardless of socioeconomic status or geographic location. The book “Hunting and Fishing in the New South – Black Labor and White Leisure after the Civil War” vividly depicts how hunting and fishing symbolized economic, cultural, and spatial separation, reflecting the ongoing struggle for control over their lives and labor. Charles Ball, a former slave, recalled the pivotal moment he acquired an old musket, marking a transition to a life of relative independence: “I now began to live well and to feel myself, in some measure, an independent man.” Following emancipation, a disturbing wave of discrimination swept across the South, targeting Black communities. This sinister campaign sought to keep them bound, subservient, and reliant on the permanent labor and needs of white individuals and businesses—one tactic involved restricting the rights of African Americans to hunt and fish. This newfound independence unsettled white agricultural employers, landowners, sportsmen, and tourism investors. They perceived it as a threat to their financial and social standing. To dismantle any hope of liberation, encourage servitude, and maintain Black inferiority, the Black Codes were established on a state-by-state basis, which limited the rights African Americans had on the lands and waters across the South. This led to increased regulation of gun and dog ownership, the enactment of trespassing laws, and unjust vagrants and labor laws. The government wielded these tools to justify criminalization, resulting in insurmountable debt or imprisonment that left Black individuals dependent on their employers and bolstered the cycle of free labor. As I continue to learn more about the historical and present inequities that have cumulatively impacted Black people’s ability to access and feel safe in the outdoors, I am compelled to acknowledge the privilege and responsibility I bear to tell their stories, recounting the love and stewardship that Black people had on the environment and their significant contribution to wealth creation, despite being dehumanized by those who perceive them as less than human.
Today, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s enduring legacy of fighting for racial equality, justice, and community through interconnectedness. Inspiring Girls* Expeditions Alaska actively builds diverse teams, offers a tuition-free format, and provides learning opportunities to create space and community for minoritized youth and early-career professionals within field sciences and outdoor recreation. We recognize the ongoing journey towards real inclusivity and equity, involving vulnerable conversations and intentional approaches to dismantle systemic barriers. 💖"When we love the Earth, we are able to love ourselves more fully." ~ bell hooks "Touching the Earth" To me, this essay reads like a love letter to Black people - a sweet invitation to come home to self and to the Earth, which are one. And, within this calling back, there is a promise for healing from the internalized "white supremacist assumptions about black identity" - a promise for recovering the truth of self as whole and joyful, connected to the abundance of the Earth.
