Fort Collins, CO After we finished at Big Bend, we had a couple of really long travel days. We drove up to Phoenix, put our camper and truck in storage, and flew to Colorado! We used to live in Denver and it’s still on the short list of places to potentially settle down but we wanted to explore Fort Collins for a less populated (and cheaper) alternative on the front range. We were able to head into the mountains for some hiking at Horsetooth Falls trail (pictures 1-6). It was relatively quick to get out into some nice scenery! I imagine the payoff of the actual falls at the end of the trail is much more exciting in the summer but the kids had fun doing a little bit of rock scrambling before we made our way back to the car. We were SO impressed by the amount of bike lanes and green space. The playgrounds (particularly Fossil Creek Park and Twin Silos) got 5 star reviews from the kids, the schools seem decent, and the views of the mountains are what I’ve been craving! But we were less impressed with the number of chain restaurants compared to smaller family owned places and it really did just feel like a big suburb. We got stuck in the Raising Canes parking lot along with half of the town, apparently this is a thing haha. Brian and the kids also went to the Museum of Discovery @focomod , but as usually happens when I don’t go, there is very little photographic evidence. The girls rated it 4.5 and 4.9 stars out of 5 and loved playing the instruments. Mr. E said it was too loud in parts and it made his stomach hurt, so he was less impressed. It's been a feast kind of day! Cousins are here, which automatically ups the fun factor. But we got to spend the morning at our local museum of discovery #focomod (SO excited they're open again). Then we had a picnic lunch at the water fountains downtown. Next we got yummy local ice cream #walrusicecream. We're at the pool now, and a movie is planned for tonight. Can one have a fuller day? It's the sweet things summer is made of. But not every day can be a fun day. Sure days have to be chore days, or simply just bored days. There same is true of homeschooling. There will be days fill of wonder and excitement: field trips, co-op feast days, even the-most-amazing-science- experiment-ever days. But most days are just math, and handwriting, and oral reading. Even if your homeschooling style is hands on and fill of exploration, you're still going to have "boring" days. And that's okay. Mommas, as you plan your next year, take the pressure off yourself to plan stellar lessons every day. Take the pressure of you're kids to find wonder in everything. If you shoot for that, you and your kids will probably burn out by October. Instead still for consistent, measured days off learning.
