Tis the season for baking with my moms 🤩 I took the day off work yesterday to spend with my moms and pops, baking up a tasty holiday storm! This has been a yearly tradition for us and I absolutely love it. Baking on my own doesn’t really do much for me, but baking at Christmas, with my moms, using a rolling pin and cookie cutters that are as old as she is, its all heart 😍 The work. The smells. The conversation. The laughs and giggles. And yes, the taste tests throughout too 😋 I love it all!! This year’s creations included: ⭐️ Classic gingerbread (my fav) ⭐️ a newish shortbread (We forgot to replenish our sprinkles, so our decorations were somewhat lacking 🤷♀️) ⭐️ Nutty chocolate clusters ⭐️ And a new orange cardamom cookie that was a definite winner! I remember some time ago that I watched an ad by @ikea about dining tables. I liked the part that mentioned that the dining table was the original family social media. Yes! The dining table brings the family together and many conversations are shared there. I do remember discussing many topics at the table with my parents and siblings and some fun jokes. Food is social. When we eat together, we enjoy food more. When we enjoy food more, we get more nutrients from it. When families eat together, it benefits them in so many ways not just health-related, but also socially. It is associated with better behaviours in children and teens. I think it brings the family closer together too. When little kids know about the table routine, they are more likely to try new foods at the table without pressure. With that, we encourage kids and families to sit together at the table and enjoy at least one meal as a family, if not more. My mother had this rule that we have to have dinner together even if we wait for few hours for everyone to finish classes or work (before leaving parents' home). Do you eat together as a family?

These tips probably aren't what you thought they'd be at first but I want to be real with you.... Thanksgiving is a holiday that while we celebrate gratitude...let's be honest...it's an eating holiday. And guess what...that's ok!! Celebrating with food is cultural. It's social. It's NORMAL! Let's keep it that way. Unfortunately it has also become the norm to guilt yourself around food. We seem to workout more because of what we ate verses how exercise makes us feel. I'm truly a believer of the 80/20 mentality. The guilt spiral leads to an unbalanced life and a recipe for disaster. So take these tips for what they are: reminders that perfection isn't better than consistency. That life is meant to be lived. That being healthy is a lifestyle and not a reaction to a holiday we are meant to fully enjoy. Will I workout tomorrow? Yup! Why? Because I always work out at 5:50 every Thursday. Get ready, Fairport! After years of standing vacant, the former Bank of America building on South Main Street has been approved to transform into an upscale restaurant owned by Jodi and Greg Johnson, owners of The Cub Room. Hubs and I had brunch at The Cub Room not long ago to get a preview of the type of food we may expect in Fairport. It’s brunch, so we started with the very necessary Bloody Mary, and then appetizers: decadent Manhattan Donuts, with a whiskey glaze and jam filling, Devils on Horseback, which was dates stuffed with blue cheese, almonds, and wrapped in bacon (flavor bombs!!!), and a Scotch Egg, a comforting and delicious treat. For our main course Hubs had Avocado Toast topped with two sunny-side up eggs and paired with a side salad. I had the “Left Over” Paella topped with two fried eggs and garlic aioli. For dessert we shared Cub Room S’mores, which was a house made marshmallow and chocolate semi-freddo on a graham cracker brownie. The top of the marshmallow was toasted to that perfect char that makes you want more. I feel so sorry for Jet-Puffed marshmallows and Hershey chocolate bars because after having the Cub Room S’mores, there’s simply no going back. And yes, we each did have an espresso martini (on the menu known as This Is Not a Martini) before we rolled out of the restaurant like Violet Beauregard off to the juicing room (IYKYK). With Hubs spending a few days in the Land of Lobsters 🦞, I decided to get some takeout for dinner. My choice? Two of the new menu items from LULU Taqueria + Mezcal. Joining my chips and salsa were the Buffalo Taco made with cauliflower and the Pork Belly Torta sandwich. The taco was light yet flavorful, satisfying that craving for wing sauce and blue cheese. But the torta… I mean, there are no words. The sticky pork belly is so tender and together with the refried beans, pickled radish and carrots, and Serrano lime aioli, the flavor combination is the definition of chef’s kiss. The torta was a special at LULU back in April, and I was so happy to see it earned a permanent spot on the menu. How do you start your day? Depending on your circumstance and schedule, the pressure on morning routines can feel overwhelming. It seems like there are waaayyyy to many things to do. Here is my checklist each morning that I use as a loose guideline to set myself up for success. 1. Rehydrate. A little lemon and some unrefined salt in water can really help replenish our electrolytes and minerals while supporting liver detox (which does its hardest work while we are asleep) 2. Getting sun on my eyes! Do you go straight to your computer without stepping outside in the AM? Or immediately put sunglasses on? Sun exposure in the morning can help regulate our circadian rhythm for the remainder of the day helping our bodies wake more gently and fall asleep better in the evening. 3. Movement. I’m not a morning exerciser but I usually at least try to go for a walk without sunglasses (killing two birds with one stone). If I have to get up early and do not have time for a walk, a quick stretch next to my bed does the trick to get blood flow moving to my joints. 4. Eat eat eat. Breakfast is so important!!! Especially for you Ladies! Our cortisol is naturally higher in the AM and like all our complex hormone systems, they communicate with one another. So yes, cortisol will effect your blood sugar. Starting your day with a protein and fiber forward meal will give you a few key benefits. When Locals Collide: You know when you read a book and within the first few pages you’re hooked? That’s what happened to me with Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel, the September Wednesday night book club choice. The book club happens twice a month (the other group meets on Tuesday and may or may not read the same book) at Another Chapter Bookstore. Anyway, I was pretty engrossed in this book as I ate my Spring Farro Bowl at FairPour. The bowl was light yet satisfying, paired with their iced black tea with bergamot. Looking for a late afternoon bite to eat or early dinner without spending a lot of 💰? Branca in Bushnell’s Basin has got you covered with their Happy Hour. Every Monday-Friday from 4-6pm, Branca offers half-price appetizers, $6 cocktails, $5 glasses of wine, and $4 rotating draft beers. We shared the house made ricotta with roasted garlic and crostini, crispy calamari and banana peppers with a smoked San Marzano aioli, the Margarita wood-fired pizza, and meatballs with basil whipped ricotta. As you can see, half-price appetizers does not mean half size. 😊 From the cocktail menu I chose the vodka-based White Rabbit while Hubs went for the On The Rocks featuring blanco tequila. We ate at the bar and, judging by the crowd, were not the only ones who knew about Branca’s fantastic Happy Hour. Also, with many restaurants in our area closed on Sundays and Mondays, it’s nice to know Branca is open seven days a week. When I think of things that go together, I think “peanut butter and jelly” or “bacon and eggs.” Also on that list is Clawson’s and breakfast pizza. Those two things just belong together, right? Well, with Hubs back in town after a week away, we thought we’d have Clawson’s for lunch to experience food beyond their wonderful breakfast pizza. We ate at the picnic tables at Center Park, and Hubs had a pastrami sub and potato salad while I had an eggplant parm on a round roll with - no judgment - Buffalo wing soup. So why would I eat a hot sandwich and soup on an unbearably humid day? Because I feel like I’m constantly searching for eggplant parm to match my mom’s, and the perfect Buffalo wing soup, and I won’t let the weather stop me from trying these things. Clawson’s eggplant was thick-cut, still crispy, yet covered in the right amount of tomato sauce and mozzarella. The soup was like chicken and dumplings but with that unmistakable Buffalo wing flavor. I had a Snapple Elements Rain juice drink, which, as a reformed Snapple iced tea fanatic I really enjoyed. Mindful eating techniques remind us to redirect our eating back to the actual act of eating. Too often our meals are squeezed in-between our daily activities. They become an add-on to what we’re already doing like driving, talking/scrolling on our phones or watching TV. By doing this, we’re not only robbing ourselves of enjoying food with family, friends and co-workers, but we’re also robbing ourselves of the human connection, conversations and shared laughs that happen during those meals. And…our distractions prevent us from paying attention to how that meal is serving us. We’re too busy to taste the food, enjoy the food or even know how much we ate. So…try slowing down, eating distraction-free and and tuning in. The social aspect of food is JUST as important as the nutrition aspect. I cannot say this enough. This weekend our friends invited us over for a second summer’s outdoor feast. We laughed. We salivated. We shared stories, as well as recent trials and triumphs, and new updates we hadn’t yet heard. We sampled wines - the Pinot gris was particularly tasty. We devoured our halibut and nibbled at the beautifully presented charcuterie. Upon leaving, I had a huge smile on my face. Dear friends, My mental health being happy and calm most certainly has a domino effect on my blood sugars being more predictable and kind. Blood sugar management isn’t just about nutrition; it’s about the whole picture - social and mental health included! Yes, we do need to carb count and it’s beneficial to be balanced, most of the time for optimal blood sugars.
