NORSK SKOGFINSK MUSEUM/ NORJAN METSÄSUOMALAISMUSEO/ MUSEUM FOR FOREST FINN CULTURE IN NORWAY Den folkegruppen som utvandret fra det indre av Finland til Skandinavia fra slutten av 1500-tallet fikk betegnelsen Skogfinner. Målsettingen med utvandringen var å kunne fortsette å leve innen hele bredden av sin kultur, men opplevde dessverre vanskeligheter, blant annet fornorskingen som startet allerede på 1600-tallet. I 1940 begynner derimot fremveksten av den skogfinske stoltheten, og interessen for kulturen øker også blant folk rundt. Det blir gitt ut bøker og dokumentarfilmer på 40- og 50-tallet. Stiftelser, foreninger og historielag er aktive frem mot årtusenskiftet slik at når Norsk Skogfinsk Museum blir etablert i 2005, var det store samlinger og mye kunnskap om Skogfinnene som kunne samlest under ett. Etter en lang kamp om å få bygt nytt museum blir det nå realitet. I feel like I told almost no one that I booked this trip (3 weeks ago HA!) because I was just sure that it wasn’t possible we would actually make it here. We were supposed to do this trip last November but had to cancel, so I am still pinching myself a little bit about this experience. This little guy is one of the gorillas born during the covid boom. Australia has committed to one billion new trees in forestry plantations to meet our future needs over the next decade. Technological advances are unlocking an array of new and exciting uses of materials derived from trees, such as: 🌲Engineered wood products 🌲The construction of high-rise buildings entirely out of wood (including Mass Timber Construction) 🌲Food additives pharmaceutical and medical applications 🌲Biofuels derived from wood that can replace fossil fuels 🌲Wood plastics that can be turned into anything from car components to recyclable replacement plastic bags. Investments in planting trees today will pay dividends for future generations as these trees mature and become available for wood and fibre supply. A billion new plantation trees will boost the Australian economy, drive jobs and growth in our rural industries and regional manufacturing. THE MONASTERY - ED-DEIR Hidden high up in the rocky hills of The Siq in Petra, is "The Monastery". As a much larger version of "The Treasury", it was originally built as 3rd Century Nabatean tomb. At some stage, it was also likely used as a Church due to apparent crosses that are carved inside. Not just any hike,you walk through The Siq [a gorge], climb over 800+ odd rocky, steep steps along narrow ledges, pass many stalls of locals selling things as well as donkey's and horses along the way. Conveniently, directly opposite the site is a cave cafè! Which was probably one of the best things I saw in all honesty (aside from the site itself) considering The Monastery is a lot further than my brain thought and I didn't research beforehand. So moral of the story, always research before a hike ha! I feel like I told almost no one that I booked this trip (3 weeks ago HA!) because I was just sure that it wasn’t possible we would actually make it here. We were supposed to do this trip last November but had to cancel, so I am still pinching myself a little bit about this experience. This little guy is one of the gorillas born during the covid boom. To celebrate my dad turning 60, we visited Myrtle Beach (his choice). My dad has never been a traveler and I think it’s safe to say that after this trip, he still is not a traveler 🤣 To stay: * We stayed at Sandy Beach Resort and while we had prime ocean views, I think the overall property could use some updates, so we likely wouldn’t stay here again. On a positive note, our suite had panoramic views of the ocean and a terrace attached to each bedroom which was perfect. * If we return to Myrtle Beach, I think we’d consider staying at Homewood Suites by Hilton or even in North Myrtle Beach To do: * 2nd Ave Pier: Our hotel was in walking distance to this pier. It was well maintained and the landscape was beautiful allowing you to walk right alongside the water for miles. You can find the Sky Wheel and the Gay Dolphin here! * Broadway at the Beach * Barefoot Landing * The Market Common To eat: * Peaches (2nd Ave Pier) * Crooked Hammock (Barefoot Landing) * National House of Pancakes (Yummy pancakes but WAY overpriced…I mean WAY!) To avoid: * If you are from the North East, I highly recommend avoiding the seafood buffets at all costs. We went to Captain Benjamin’s seafood buffet and it was god awful. I am not picky at all and I could barely stomach eating at this place. I imagine the other seafood buffets in this area are similar but coming from the North where we have some of the absolute best seafood, there is just no comparison and it’s better to skip in our opinion.
