Let that dog out 🐺🐺🐺 #year5 #sub4 The marathon doesn’t run you, you run the marathon. Never underestimate how much of a beast a marathon can be… no matter how many times you’ve done it. 6 months ago I decided that at my 5th #HoustonMarathon I would attempt to run my first sub 4 hour marathon. Last week that dream became a reality. Months of training, long runs, sacrifices, late nights after work, and hundreds of miles, all lead me to this moment. My previous best marathon time was 4:32. Race recap: This truly was the best race of my life so far. The weather was perfect. The morning of the race went perfect. I started the morning at 4am with a cup of black coffee followed by 2 scoops of Gatorade endurance formula, a bagel with honey, and a banana. 1 hour before the race I ate 1 honey stinger waffle and sipped on 12 ounces of BPN electrolytes. 5 minutes before the race I consumed my first Gu gel. I found the 4 hour pace group and stuck with them for about the first 18 miles averaging about an 8:50 min/mile pace. At that point I knew I would finish what I started, and earn what I showed up for that day. I also had the privilege of running this race with my brother Matthew. We both hit our sub 4 hour goals. What’s next in 2024? PR my 50k time at the #BrazosBend50 , PR my 100K time at the #habanero100 , and finally - a 2nd attempt at running 100 miles at the #BrazosBend100
RSD - 2,133. Thursday Morning Run 4 miles with Debi for Thursday. Thanks for the great conversation. It made the miles go by quickly. It was 75 degrees with the feels like of 77 with 93% humidity. It definitely felt hotter than what it was today. My average heart rate was 136 beats per minute, and l was able to stay in zone three for the majority of the run. RSD - 2,093. Saturday Morning Long Run I had not done my half marathon distance this month, so today was the day to get it done. I ran with some of the @championsrunning group at 6 am and did 4 miles. Then, I came back and met the 6:45 am group and did another 9 for a total of 13.16 miles. It was a hot one today. It was 81 degrees, with the feels like of 88 with 93% humidity. My average heart rate was 155 beats per minute, and l was in zone four for the majority of the run. I did good through about mile 7, and then the struggle bus showed up for the next 5 miles. I tried to finish strong for the last mile. I'm glad I got this one done and out the way today. Did a thing over the past weekend. It was hot and sandy, uphill the whole way and miserable. It was the most fun I've had suffering in a long time. ⚔️ Trail racers tend to be good folks anyways but the nutters that go and run in hell on the hottest day of the year are extra fun to hang out with. 😂😂💯🖤🖤🤙🏼👊🏼 ⚔️ Comfort kills and gratitude cures.. it was full of discomfort and I'm very grateful for my comfortable bed and my AC again.. and EVERYTHING again. ⚔️ The things we have access to in this country would make the kings 🤴 of days past look like peasants. The spices in our pantries alone. Access to all the FOOD we could possibly want with year round produce. We can travel across the country in hours instead of months and years. The everyday miracles we take for granted. The list is endless and I will take them for granted again sooner or later. That's why I do hard things. Reminder. ⚔️ Gratitude heals. Comfort kills. Another #Habanero100 in the books. What an absolute beast of a race. Can easily say one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to endure, but also so happy to take home another 100K buckle. Words cannot describe the heat experienced during the first 7 hours of this race. Temperatures felt like 115F. I felt like my skin was burning off while having hallucinogenic thoughts of collapsing on the course. Yet I endured and pushed forward. Once night came, I was able to get some actual running in without my heart rate skyrocketing. The rest is history. Good race and now a 2x Habanero 100k finisher. Fave moments from the weekend: carpool talk with @debirunshouston 🚙, the completely refreshing (and totally necessary) ice bath provided by @mybcfit 🧊 🛀 , watching @sidmallick and @lazy_avenger CRUSH their 30ks with such a positive attitude, running in the complete darkness 💫 , sitting under the tent with friends ⛺️ , talking to a stranger during the first loop about how our teenagers make fun of our hobby of choice but we know that they’re still proud, eating taco truck quesadillas 🌮 , and the Coca Cola provided by @kbrich2 HIT THE SPOT. NEVER HAS A SODA TASTED SO GOOD. 😆 🥤 My not faves: My heart rate 😵💫🤪 It was a dog fight out there. That heat will humble you, but doing it with friends is the KEY. It’s #medalmonday kids! -Was finally able to get some sleep. After those 20km in Satan’s Sandbox, I spent a restless night with fever, leg flutters, hot spots on my feet revealing themselves as they rubbed on the bedsheets, and a mega itchy head 🤣 (always happens to me when I sweat a lot or after swimming). -Was finally able to eat. My Mcds dinner post race was a joke. Ate because I knew I needed to. Didn’t finish my burger nor fries. Spent all day yesterday drinking loads of water and electrolytes up until last night’s pizza. -Was finally able to stop worrying about the hubby. @runpenarun completed another 100miler, and his second #habanero100 Congrats to all the runners! Praying everyone is good and safe after so many EMS scares. Thank you @calneff and the @trailracingovertexas team and volunteers for another fun time. It’s time to head back home, get lots of cuddles and snuggles from @gosethedog and fire up that grill! 🔥

Went out to the 7IL Ranch in Catsprings Tx and either they put more sand on the course this year or I forgot there was that much sand last year. Either way, I only did two loops. Wanna improve your performance in the heat? Learn how to optimize your hydration before a race/workout! I was reminded a few days ago, during an athlete’s sweat sodium test, about a common mistake when preparing for a hot race: drinking a ton of plain water in the days preceding the event. 👎 This inevitably leads to diluting your blood sodium concentration, making you pee right out all that water, not having enough sodium to retain those fluids, and turning up at your event already struggling with cramping and stomach issues from mile 1 (and possibly already slightly hyponatremic, a dangerous condition where your blood sodium levels are low). 🥴 Hydrating normally and adding electrolytes to those fluids will help, but an even better approach is to pre-load, or drink a strong electrolyte drink before a long/hot/hard race or workout, to increase your endurance performance in the heat. 💪 Up to 60-90 minutes before, drink 16oz of fluid with 750-1500mg of sodium, with 750mg the best option if a lot of sodium gives you stomach issues. Eventually, if you can tolerate higher amounts, you can increase the amount to ~1500mg. 🧂 I also recommended the same strong electrolyte drink right after, to help your body retain more fluids and re-hydrate faster. 🔥 Need more help with your hydration or getting ready for your next race? Miles and miles of #prayer #gratitude and solo #reflection Sometimes I run out of things to say, but I know He hears me without saying anything at all. No matter how long or short the run or race, there's always an inevitable moment(s) of self doubt. I had expected to feel rejuvenated as the darkness of the night gave way to morning, but, as the sun rose, anxiety set in and I became emotional. I knew I would finish, but I also knew I was minutes away from obtaining my personal goal. And I felt it slipping away. But then it rained... It was brief. It was beautiful. And it literally (and figuratively) washed away every ounce of anxiety. Thank you @julzd808 for this amazing plaque to display my #100milebuckle and for being my number one fan. Habanero 💯 Race Report:👇 . First I want to say how grateful I am to be physically, mentally, and financially capable of running these extreme races. Thank you GOD! . What you plan for and what happens during a hundred mile foot race are often very different scenarios, especially when it’s your first time on a course. . This was my first time running Habanero. What I had trained for and what I was sure to be facing was heat. . The race start is at 12pm in order to maximize the time under the sun. I was happy it was only 88° at this point with a chance of some rain in the forecast. . This was all just a disillusion as it would eventually heat up to 102°. . Because this race is so tough, the race director advertises he will write you a $280 check at the finish, to cover your race fee, if you complete in under 24hrs. . I remember hearing a saying, if you shoot for the stars and miss, you still might hit the moon. . When my sub 24 hr goal was escaping me I just imagined the satisfaction of crossing a finish line on the moon. . probably around 4am I laid down in a recliner and got very cold. I had to put on a long sleeve shirt in order to stop shaking. . As soon as I started to overheat again and had to shed the shirt, I promised myself I wouldn’t lie down again. . Sitting was bad too. Every time I’d get up from sitting to continue on, my left foot / ankle / shin complex would be so stiff and painful I was sure I’d never be able to run again. . Once the sun came up I had new energy. I stopped sitting at aid stations and my foot and ankle began to perform better. . A couple things I did not plan for were extreme humidity and all the sand. . While I didn’t get my sub 24 goal I did run a PR 100 mile time of 25:24:23! . This was also my first time to run 100 miles with NO pacer. . I’ll never forget the man I came through the finish line with. You learn a lot when you suffer with others. . Special thanks to my Mom @beckyusafa 24 hours with no sleep under a canopy when it’s 100°+ is an extreme act of love. Thank you Mom!! . Ready or not tomorrow I attempt to run 100 miles. I say attempt because well, it's 100 miles, and because it's August in South Texas and this event has a 28% finish rate. When I ran this course in 2021 for my first #50krace, I said I would NEVER go back. I've obviously developed amnesia, because I chose to go back and try to go 70 miles fàrther. I know I'm tough. I know I'm not a quitter. But I also know anything can happen, and that the medical team can decide to pull me even if I say "I'm fine.* Weigh in this evening, and the scale said "Oompf, girl you better go run 100 miles!" 🤣🤣🤣 Super grateful that my two favorite people are here to support me! @ceaton3 @julzd808 I know this is a lot, and I love you both so much. @sunshinerunner6 has agreed to be my pacer (should I need one), and I couldn't be more honored. 🏃🏼♂️I will be running another 100 mile race this Saturday. 🔥It’s called Habanero Hundred and it starts at noon. 🙏🏼If I happen to cross your mind, pray for me. "One run can change your day. Many runs can change your life." I started running about 9 years ago. I started with just 1 mile and had no idea where that mile would take me. I can clearly remember the first time I ran 3 miles without having to walk at all. That's the moment I felt like I was a "runner". Since then #running has completely changed my life. I grew up believing I hated running. What you believe about yourself has a lot of control over the direction of your life. The moment my beliefs about what I was and what I was capable of, changed, my whole world changed with it. It changed me as a father, a husband, a friend, and as a business man. I replaced "that's impossible" and "I can't" with "WHAT IF?". You should start asking yourself "what if?" and see where it takes you. I have a life I would not have if it weren't for running and for that I am grateful. So many people have been a part of my journey as a runner. A few that really stand out are Roy my very first running buddy. Randy, my very first running "coach". Kris who ran my very first hundred with me and Mandy for never letting me get complacent in literally anything I do. Melanie for changing my socks as the most selfless crew member and Dallas for all his support. Benjamin for crewing and making me feel like a rockstar even when I DNF. Kristina for pacing a good portion of my last hundred. My parents for always believing I can do anything. Dale for always being down to crew, pace, run with, and consistently encouraging me in all my endeavors. And soooooo many #gritfam that inspire me literally everyday. You and SO MANDY OTHERS make me better and I hope the feeling is mutual. . . It's time to set some ascending goals for Habanero 100 miler: 1: Don't die. I think this is a pretty realistic goal but not for certain. 2: Finish. I get 30 hours of frying in the sun before they'll pull my charred body off the course. 3: Under 24 hours. You get a refund on entry if you achieve this so it just makes sense economically. 4: Course Record. I know it's a little bit of a gap between my first goal and this one but I can dream, right? Tri Girl Race Report. I didn't die 🤣 I've only swam 3 x since October, and my biking has been about the same. Really long distance running has been my focus (which also means really slooooooow) so I knew this would be tough (and it was)!!! But just in case a triathlon pops up in the middle of #habanero100, I'm ready now 🤣 Grateful to have competed with an amazing group of women and for all the awesome volunteers who helped make this happen and keep us safe!! Slow and steady trail marathon at Montebella, through the long grass around "Sheralee's Lake", and into Mexico. Practicing my walk/run ratios the entire time so I can force myself to eat and keep my heart rate low. My legs were tired today, but I felt so much better overall than last week (I was able to sweat for one thing 🤷🏻♀️ and almost no coughing). Three weeks to #habanero100 My biggest concern is blister management and shoe choice (I'm obsessed actually. Before and After #beachtobay #marathon with 1/2 the #runningraiders crew in honor of #armedforces day. One of the biggest 6 person marathon relays in the world, we were some of the crazies who chose to do the whole thing. It was a privilege to #RunForAHero in honor of @[100080504184700:Xavier Avila Jr.] (As well as all my other friends who have served) This was not an easy event. Dewpoint was 78 or higher. Heat indexes in the 100s. Blazing sun the whole way. Like literally maybe 200 meters of shade total 🥵 Sunburned ✅ Multiple gnarly blisters from my feet getting soaked from dumping water on myself ✅ A trip to the medical tent afterwards ✅ Garmin reminding me how unproductive I am ✅✅😡😡 Overall, I'm really happy with how I did. This race was training for much bigger things. Second overall female 8th overall And first place masters.
