Hailes castle is very special to me. I have visited and snapped it in all weathers and am now enjoying spending time there with the Tiny Tyrant. Our almost daily visits are always lovely. It’s sad to see it fenced off as it has been for a while now while @historicscotland carry out repairs. Todays visit included an adventure along the river with the puppies. Lovely day out in East Lothian today. First stopped by Hailes Castle, sadly could only see it from the outside as its yet another HES site affected by the masonry issues. We then went on to Smeaton Nursery and Tea Room for a coffee and scone (didn’t realise we had been there before until we walked in). Finally, a great boat trip, courtesy of Sula Boat Trips, around Craigleith and Bass Rock. For the first time in my life I saw wild puffins and they are bloody adorable. Hailes Castle and Traprain Law. The castle stands on a promontory on the Scottish River Tyne, The castle was founded as a fortified tower house by Hugo de Gourlay before 1300, making it one of the oldest constructions of its kind in Scotland. The superiority of the lands was held by the Earls of Dunbar and March. The de Gourlays, a Northumbrian family, supported the English in the Wars of Independence, and their land was forfeited by order of the Scottish Crown. Hailes Castle and lands were then confirmed upon another Northumbrian, Sir Adam de Hepburn (d. before 1371), who, in the reign of David II, had a charter of the lands of Traprain, and Southalls and Northalls (now united and called Hailes) in Haddingtonshire, as well as the lands of Mersingtoun, Cockburnspath, and Rollanstoun in Berwickshire. On 20 December 1451, Sir Patrick Hepburn, 1st Lord Hailes, had a Crown charter of the Lordship of Hailes and other lordships and lands, which his predecessors formerly held in heritage of the Earls of March, who again held them of the Crown in chief; also the lands of Prendergast, above Ayton, and others in the sheriffdom of Berwick, with all rights in the lands formerly held by George Dunbar, Earl of March, and forfeited by him: the whole erected into a free barony to be called the Barony of Hailes. He was one of the conservators of truces with England in 1449, 1451-7 and 1459. It is thought that Sir Patrick Hepburn dramatically extended the castle. A massive tower of at least four storeys was built to the west of the original construction, and a lower tower to the East to form a long north range, looming above the River Tyne. The thick curtain wall of the castle may date back to the 13th century. On 19 October 1507 James IV visited the castle and gave a tip to masons working on the building. 📍Hailes Castle One of the best preserved stone castles from the 1200s, Hailes Castle can be found in the glen of the River Tyne, near East Linton, East Lothian 🏰 Holding a long history, the castle was thought to have been built in the early 1200s, and has ties to Mary Queen of Scots, who stayed here en route to her wedding with James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, in 1567. A place I visited often with family as a bairn, it’s a lovely place to visit, with lots of interesting nooks and crannies. The grounds are open all year round, but as you can see from the photos, access to the actual castle is currently restricted for masonry inspections. #HailesCastle is shut to visitors but you are allowed across the wee stream to peer through the fence, which seems reasonable. The #snowdrops (image one) are beautiful this year. Image two is the castle. It's taken keeking through the fence. And image three is the whole castle- there really were no straight horizon lines. It suffered in the #RoughWooing under #HenryVIII who had an extreme line in entitlement, and was further wrecked by #Cromwell.

Hailes Castle & Amisfield Walled Garden - East Lothian Two hidden gems nearby each other. Hailes Castle is fenced off from visitors but you can still wander round the grounds. It isn’t a big place but would be a good picnic spot if you’re in the area. The castle itself looks like it would have been impressive in its day. If you don’t like driving on narrow single track roads - this isn’t the place for you. Amisfield is one of the largest walled gardens in Scotland and dates back to the 18th century. It is in the process of being restored back to its previous grandeur but with 16ft high walls it is still an impressive sight. Probably best visited in the spring/summer but even now it’s a nice and peaceful walk. Premier Inn (A1 Musselburgh) to Dunbar (22/10/22) The day started out mizzly, past the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh on our way to Wallyford. Short hop on the train to Longniddry, with a meander along the roads to Myreton Motor Museum. On the hills ahead we spotted Hopetoun Monument, down a "track" we went trudging through the fields to a B road. After a steep accent and decent to the monument, lunch was found in Haddington. Onwards to Hailes castle, hedges flying by and roads were good. Tyne Bridge between Haddington & East Linton. This concrete bridge came into use in the early 2000’s when a new duel carriageway section of the A1 was opened. The bridge is unique in that there are no other bridges in the south east of Scotland that have been built on the scale. A goodly lump of 14th-century ruins. • It started as a state-of-the-art towerhouse in the 13th century, built by a powerful cross-border English family.
