1 year ago today EJayDesign opened its doors! Thank you to anyone who has visited 🥰 It has provided so many opportunities, allowing people from all over the world to take a bit of my artwork back to their home and show their friends. What a journey, starting in France with only a table, taking a print everywhere I went trying to get cool photos, making a MASSIVE welcome sign for my hometown and eventually my own wee shop 😃 It was a big decision to make, needing two months of renovations loosing my mind and investing in such a large amount of stock. It's always risky in small towns, so I was quite nervous. I'm over the moon to see my business has grown immensely because of the little shop and that it all paid off! and today also marks the first cruise ship of the season in the new deep water terminal. Stornoway welcomes 'Ambition', carrying over 1000 tourists. The shop will only be open weekends and cruise ship days during April as I am travelling. In May, normal working hours will resume. I am really proud of this series. It is difficult to get exactly the mood you felt in a place onto a canvas and I feel with this series I can really see the benefit of having a space to practice and make art in. I am hanging on to them for now while I decide where they are going to go - if I want to add more and sell the series in some shops or galleries or if they will go to new homes privately. But they WILL be on the website soon to look at and I plan to have some days the wee studio space can be open for people to come and have a look in person. I am very lucky to have family in Nice that allowed me to escape most of the Hebridean winter this year. Since 2019, I've poured my heart into my business. Now, I'm finally taking a breather, working remotely in these quiet months. It has been beautiful yet strange, returning to live here for a while. To see my name still on the post box, to walk past the bar I used to work at, to remember old faces that have also moved on. Every corner is filled with old memories, of happiness and heartbreak. I was so sure I would make a life here, but the universe had other plans. I wonder who I would have become if I stayed, feeling a twinge of sadness, but then I remember I have the best shop in the world waiting for me in the Hebrides, ready for an even busier summer than last, and I am glad to have chosen home! Gannets, terns and oystercatchers hand painted on driftwood. I put these up on my stories this week and they sold quickly! Thank you to everyone who got in touch, I will be painting more. Hopefully the January storms have left plenty more driftwood for me to collect along the coast. Once dried out, I work on these in layers - painting and sanding. 2019. I was invited for a graphic design interview at Top Marques in Monaco (luxury cars, boats, planes, watches - for the super rich!!) I was given a test before I was invited, just 'make us a poster ' - nothing else to work with. I studied their website design and found stock photos. My whole weekend was spent making TWO posters, and I got an interview 🤠 this photo was taken on my way there, looking down at Monaco. I was desperate to leave my bar job and working in Monaco would be so cool. Anyway, she said she wanted to hire me but as I didn't speak French she couldn't, which was annoying as I stated that at the beginning! I remember sitting under a tree trying not to cry and feeling very silly I thought I could get such a big job. Leaving so much behind to build a new life is incredibly hard and it's easy to feel silly when your new life isn't shaping up to what you thought it would. Now I look at this photo and smile cause I got an even better job !! 😎 😎😎 France holds such special and strange memories for me, I secretly hope to still move back one day. My last commission of 2023 was this Great Northern Diver (Common Loon). They are striking birds with the most perfectly checkered plumage on their back and wings. From a distance they look black and white but they have glossy tints of blue and green on their head and neck along with deep red eyes. They are real life works of art! As its the start of December I thought I would show you a wreath I recently made out of the waste cut offs from Harris Tweed, lace, ceramic bits and pom poms. So a bit of everything you could say. 😆 I have been making these the last few years. It's amazing how all these bits can come together as a whole and work together. It takes ages to make (making pom poms and ceramic pieces) and cutting out and knotting all the bits but i do like how they turn out. Any scrap fabric can be used. If you have problems with your joints i would recommend cutting and knotting etc on various different days/weeks to avoid getting too sore from all the repetitive movements. That's what I do anyway. Haven't decided who is getting this one for Christmas yet. Maybe I will just keep it for myself. 🤔 I have never tried making wreaths out of real foliage before but I'm looking forward to trying that out this year. Planning on going to a workshop that @jennysmithartist is doing @grinneabhat_ on Thursday. Whatever I make that day will be used as a Christmas gift, as long as I manage to make a good enough job of it. So fingers crossed! This piece is called 'Cuimhneachain anns an t-sneachd I' which means 'Memories in the snow' in English. It is one of the pieces I have on show in @tallanamara for the @openstudioshebrides ‘Winter Light' exhibition. There is a great selection of work on display by a variety of artists, so lots to see if you get the chance to visit (painting, photography, textile art, etc). We haven't had any snow yet this winter at lower ground anyway, although it certainly feels cold enough now. I should make sure I get some small paintings done and then frozen, so that I will have them ready to make the most of whenever the snow does decide to come. Drawing and swimming (not necessarily at the same time😉) are two things that immediately put me in my happy place. I loved creating this drawing inspired by a snorkelling expedition on the sometimes choppy south eastern coast of Vatersay. Not on this day. It was sunny and calm and little crabs who spotted me lifted their claws as if to say ‘ho you!’ and then ran away, not expecting a response. I was recently asked how long it takes me to make a drawing like this. The actual drawing process is fairly swift -if you know what you are doing. However, to build up the knowledge of which materials to use, to learn to draw confidently and to become a competent swimmer and carry out on-site research takes considerably longer. How long does it take to travel from the Scottish mainland to Vatersay? Five and a half hours on the boat. How long does it take to learn to steer the vessel? Potentially a lifetime. Most of my frozen painting installations (based around the concept of memories) have been done along the shore in Upper Shader. This is the village I grew up in and I have so many fond memories of playing down there with family and friends or exploring along the rocks. It is planned for this area to be the site for one of the worlds largest windfarms. 66 giant turbines each 380 meters/1246 feet high only 3 miles out from the villages all along the west coast of the island in the inshore waters (details in Northland's recent scoping report). All the associated substations and other infrastructure are planned to be built along our shores and beaches industrialising what is currently one of the UKs most unspoilt coastline. The company is a Canadian company called Northland and none of the power is for the island. It is to be transferred to the mainland via an interconnector and transferred down south. I am all for renewables but not obscenely large profit driven projects that would be destructive to already vulnerable communities such as this. Something of this size would also be destructive to the bird and marine life that live here in (or migrate to) the Outer Hebrides. The size and scale is totally out of proportion to the size of our island.
