We went to the Santa Ysabel Open Space Preserve West Trail Sunday-- it was absolutely stunning. Everything is so green and we saw tons of wildlife including large birds of prey, cows, bison, ground squirrels, danger noodles, tadpoles, and more! I'll be slowly sharing the photos but first here's a dump of the photos I took of us (or had Omeed take). This was my first "real" water crossing-- it went up to my shins so we had to take our shoes and socks off to cross. Most people just turned around at the creek but I think that was a mistake, it honestly felt really good to soak my feet. I was a dummy who tried to cross before taking off my shoes though so I hiked like 3.5 miles in wet shoes which I don't recommend. I hit up the new "Oceanside Trail" out at Cabrillo Monument yesterday. It starts at the tidal pools down below and works its way up the side of a steep hill to the lighthouse up above. You can also reverse this, park up top and work your way down if you prefer. The trail itself is very well made with a little crushed gravel here and there, nice stair runs and plenty of switchbacks so it never really feels too strenuous. If you're into California native plants, like I am, this is a good trail for you. I don't recall ever seeing such plant diversity in such a short span. At approximately one and a half miles round trip I'd say this trail is short but sweet. I Haven’t Done Those Yet, So I Can’t Say, But Those Are What The Expert Hikers Are Saying 😬 I Definitely Had To Prepare Myself For This Hike And Made Sure I Did As Much Research As I Can. I Knew I Had To Start At The Trailhead Super Early. So Right After Work I Drove To Anza Borrego That Friday And Tried Sleeping In My Car, Just To Wake Up At 3AM And Start The Hike. Well I Hiked At 3AM But I Only Got An Hour Of Sleep, Do To The Fact That It Was Super Windy, Me Overthinking And I Was All Alone, In The Middle Of Desert, In Pitch Black Darkness “Scary” 🫣 This Hike Is Definitely No Joke As It’s Easily To Get Lost. I Spent So Much Time Guessing If That Was A Trail Or Not. I’m Still Shocked On How I Was Able To Make My Way In Darkness, But Not Just That, I’m Amazed On How I Pushed Myself To Complete Rabbit Peak As Well. It Was So Confusing. I Started At 3AM And Didn’t Finish Until 7PM. If It Wasn’t For Me Taking Pics 📸 I Think I Would’ve Been Done Sooner Because I Was Moving At A Decent Pace. To Be Honest All That Training I Did Helped. STANLEY PEAK ⛰️ This 6.3 mile loop officially wraps up our exploration of Daley Ranch! The trail is well maintained with a 1.033 ft elevation gain which isn’t too strenuous. Gliderport Torrey Pines – one of San Diego's most stunning ocean viewpoints. It's no wonder people glide from here! After taking in the view, you can takes stairs down to Black's Beach or, for the more adventurous, take the Ho Chi Minh trail. For this one I recommend good grip shoes and a no fear of heights. The community of Black birders I’ve found and become a part of (both virtually and in-person) has enhanced my life so much. It’s something I list regularly when I reflect on what I’m grateful for these days. It’s just such a good feeling to feel like you belong, to not be the “only one” and to find people who share your passion and lived experiences. I had the awesome opportunity to meet and bird with Christian Cooper @christiancooperbirder and in case you were wondering, he is one of the coolest people ever. Christian was in San Diego in February for the SD Bird Festival and we went on an all-day birding adventure along the CA and Mexico border. Many good laughs, discussions, bird spottings and sweats were had! I’ve gotta say that one of my favorite life experiences has to be getting to hear him speak on the importance of changing bird names. I’ve not heard or read anything by anyone that has addressed the issue, called out racism and offered solutions the way he did. What a powerful presentation and what a pleasure to have met such an awesome person! Also, I must shout out my friends @tammahwatts and @julianj1987! Every time I go on a bird walk with my fellow BIPOC birders out here in San Diego, I learn so much! I love birds and birdwatching, and I know a lot about birds but among my birding friends here, I tend to be more of a sponge and student - happily! Everyone always patiently helps me find a bird in my binoculars, teaches me the names of lifers and gives me tips for where to explore and find more birds. All aboooard! Monday I had the urge to stretch my legs so I headed up to Mt. Laguna and hopped on the Big Laguna trail heading east for a bit and then caught the Pacific Crest Trail heading north bound. When I started out, the snow was soft, the breeze was mild and there was a slight chill in the air making for excellent hiking conditions. It was nice and I hiked on. By the time I hit the top of the trail, the temperature had dropped, the wind had picked up and was now barreling across the landscape like a runaway freight train! I've hiked that section of trail many times, but this was the first time ever where I was a little uncomfortable standing at that view point looking down on Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. I stayed away from the edge. I dropped my pack, pulled out my fleece gloves, took a drink of water, snapped a few photos and got the the heck out of there. All and all it was still a fun hike. A little cold at the top. A bit windy near the end.
