BEST OF APRIL (BOOKS): More focused on film this month than literature, being exceptionally busy with my own writing projects, "In a Lonely Place" (1947) by Dorothy H. Hughes is a crime classic essential I'd been meaning to get around to for several years, actually. Along with with Nicholas Ray's iconic 1950 adaptaton starring Humphrey Bogart, Hughes’s classic novel helped to reinvent the noir. What happens when our “femme fatale” (or “fatal woman”) meets her match – or: more than merely meeting her match, becomes the object of obsession for a very, very dangerous man (a homicidal maniac, quite possibly) she is nonetheless hopelessly in love with? We see that here, the genre’s central conceit inverted. The title – “In a Lonely Place” — is probably best recognized in association with the latter, film adaptation (Bogart bought the rights immediately upon its first publication), but I would encourage people to think about these as separate works: one of literary, and one of cinematic imagination. That being said, it is hard to read Hughes’ without conjuring up the eerie noir contrast of the black and white, the three man band music, the images of the smoke fingering its way out of the storm grates of L.A. at that time. This IS a book to read with those cinematic goggles on. Hughes understands men. The usual sense of dread associated with such pieces is accentuated. The film (famously about a screenwriter adapting a novel he hasn’t read) shows the limitations of its medium here, as Hughes is able to see inside the minds of her characters, shifting between memory and ongoing event within a single paragraph to amplify tensions even more, as we come to understand what’s really going on in that mind of our tortured protagonist. New Post up at Finding Lost Voices! I grew up in Sebastopol, CA, a small apple-farming town in Sonoma County where you wouldn’t think much crime happened. But two horrific crimes haunted my childhood. Ramon Salcido’s gruesome murder of his family (including his three daughters, one of whom survived having her throat slit and being left to die in a dump) and the 1993 kidnapping and murder of twelve-year-old Polly Klaas. How could these brutal murders have taken place? Who were the troubled men who committed these crimes? Perhaps these early encounters and the fear and fascination they left reverberating in me made me love True Crime (including podcasts like My Favorite Murder) and Crime Noir. But, whenever I read a book in the Crime Noir genre, the women seemed predictable and not like women I knew. That is until I discovered the work of the classic noir writer Dorthy B. Hughes (1904 - 1993). I first encountered Hughes in my biography writing workshop. One of our members was writing a biography about her and recommended I read her classic novel, In A Lonely Place. When I took her advice, I was amazed. I’d never read anything like it, and I couldn’t understand why I’d never heard of her work. Hughes was hugely popular during her lifetime. Several of her novels were adapted into Hollywood films. I always say weird is good and this dark-hearted weird little noir gem is weird in the best way. Like: weird, suddenly-violent, washed-up screenwriter Bogey in a movie about making movies. Everyone in this is fleeing a wreckage-strewn past filled with poor choices and grasping at one last shot at happiness and fulfillment and…well…I won’t spoil it if you haven’t seen it. It’s based on a novel by one of the most overlooked crime writers, Dorothy B. Hughes, who also wrote a book in 1963 that I just read a few weeks ago that totally blew me away. No spoilers on that one, either, but if you’re a fan of crime fiction pick that one up and don’t read the forward or afterword just start the novel and you’ll see why about a third of the way through. #inalonelyplace #humphreybogart #dorothybhughes

In a Lonely Place (1950). “I was born when she kissed me. I died when she left me. I lived a few weeks while she loved me.” In a Lonely Place is one of the greatest films noir that I’ve seen, easily in my top ten. Bogart plays Dixon Steele, an L.A. screenwriter with a penchant for sudden violence. After he becomes the lead suspect in the investigation of a young woman’s murder, his neighbor Laurel (Gloria Grahame in arguably her greatest performance) provides an alibi. But as Dix and Laurel become romantically involved, Dix’s odd behavior begins to give Laurel doubts about his innocence. But can Laurel escape the relationship without being strangled by Dix? Not even the screenwriters knew until the final scene was shot. Although In a Lonely Place has the trappings of a crime drama, at its core is the love story between Dix and Laurel. But Bogart’s portrayal of Dix, infused with both charisma and menace, creates a sense of increasing dread as the viewer begins to wonder whether Laurel will become one of Dix’s victims. If I can recommend a great black and white flick for you guys. 1950’s In a Lonely Place, is one of these flicks and you will not be disappointed. Especially if you love thriller, mystery and a little romance. Humphrey Bogart is a perfect gentleman and a real mans man in this flick. This is definitely a late night rainy storm movie. Hollywood screenwriter Dixon Steele (Humphrey Bogart) and his neighbor Laurel (Gloria Grahame) are just getting to know each other romantically when the police begin questioning Dixon about his involvement in the murder of a girl he met once. Certain her new love interest is innocent, Laurel stands by Dixon, but as the police continue pressing him, Dixon begins to act increasingly erratically.
