Another weekend, another couple of Munro mountains, this time Cruachan Ardrain & Bein Tulaichean with a combined ascent of 1296m anf 17km. We climbed above the clouds and then as the weather changed the peaks all around us came and went and then finally we had gorgeous sunshine☀️ along with the beautiful contrast of snow ❄️ on the rocky peaks. No food needed until the first too and then enjoyed my hot smoked salmon and boiled eggs. Ketones nicely raised by the time we got home two hours after finishing. Next week I will be sharing the results of my continuous ketone monitoring of another mountain ascent. It wasn’t quite as snowy as this in the Cairngorms on Saturday, but it was definitely more wintry than the west coast! We ticked off our last Munro over east - Beinn Mheadhoin - a hill that’s eluded us more than once, both times in deep winter conditions as a part of longer multi-hill routes. Was lovely being back in the Cairngorms again, exploring the big empty nothingness around Loch Avon, a pleasant wee reminder of how much Scotland has to offer 🏴
Saturday's long run plan got back burnered after a works night out on Friday (life happens!). So instead it was 35km and 1400m elevation on the cards for Sunday. It was a fantastic weekend of walking down Glen Strathfarrar! We had delayed this trip from last year due to some extreme weather and the reward was perfect spring conditions including sunshine, blizzards, snow and fabulous views! Saturday was a traverse of the northern Munros of the Glen making for a great ridge walk. We went west to east after leaving a car at each end to make the finding a wee bit easier. The stalkers path up onto the ridge makes for a relatively easy climb to the first Munro Sgùrr Fhuar-tuill before a sweeping ridge walk to the highest peak of the day Sgùrr a’Choire Ghlais. A little old hard snow below the summit before the walk out to Carn nan Gobhar and then Sgùrr na Ruaidhe. Finishing in glorious spring sunshine. Sunday it was Maoile Lunndaidh. I love this hill and especially walking in from Glen Strathfarrar. The path above Loch Monar is good and has bridges over the major streams with views south to the Mullardoch hills and west to Lurg Mhor. Just brilliant. We had sunshine for the walk in and as we climbed onto the summit plateau the snow and cloud came only to leave quickly giving us a sensational traverse of the summit. There is the ambiguity over the true summit and whether Creag Toll a’Choin is higher - after a survey apparently it is. This mini horseshoe around the impressive corrie takes both in and you cannot tell the difference if you ask me! We spotted plenty of Ptarmigan in their spring plumage pairing up as well as a lone Snow bunting. It was a quick descent before the weather came in and then we enjoyed a dry walk back to the Monar dam. At this time of the year both these walks require you to be down and back at the locked gate before 18:00hrs. Ben Nevis in Fort William, Scotland 🏴 At 4,413 ft (or 1,345m), Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland, the United Kingdom and the British Isles. 🏴 I was in Fort William last week because my partner was racing, so thought I'd give Ben Nevis a go. Being something of a couch potato, and having jiggered my knee doing Ben Lomond the week previously, I was only aiming to get about halfway up. Surprisingly, I actually made it onto the summit plateau but, frustratingly, with the end in close sight, I couldn't complete the last little bit because the ground there was steep and covered in compact snow that my shoes just weren't able to get a grip on. Having a realisitc sense of my own abilities, I decided that bit wasn't safe without crampons and came back down. 🏴 I might not have technically finished, but I'm still proud of how far I got. Knowing I can actually get that high now, I'm hoping to return in the summer when there will be less snow, and next time I'll know to bring crampons too just in case. In the meantime, I'm at home resting my knee and also tending to the sunburn I somehow managed to acquire. In Scotland. In April 😅 🏴

Quick jaunt up to the Fannichs (south of Ullapool) on Saturday night, late season northerlies bringing negative temps overnight and some wintry weather on the hills including a wonderful hour of sideways driven snow - it was fairly roasting in sun further down. 1. Sgurr Bhreac (999m) 2. Still corniced Sgùrr nan Clach Geala (1093m) (hill of the white stones) , the scale of the crags plunging down towards Coire Mor gives some food for thought on whether to trust steps on snow, not wanting to experiment with extra quick descent routes… 3. Winding round the east face of Sgurr nan Clach Geala 4. Ptarmigan, probably wishing they’d kept their winter plumage a little longer later on 5. Meall Garbh Finally got back to finish off the Lawers range! We were so close to this one back in November when we done Meall Greig but didn’t want to loose day light, so decided to cut back down and missed this at the time. Today the weather was decent for most of the walk, but the weather closed in within 30 seconds of reaching the summit. It was probably the coldest summit to date. I took my hand out my glove to take a picture and instantly my hand was in agony with the cold, so it was a fairly quick turnaround. The first time I completed the Fisherfield round, following the usual route from Shenavall bothy, the hours at altitude elapsed in a smothering murk. I can’t quite decide in retrospect whether it was a consequence of my vision being clouded by the, well cloud, or my recalcitrant brain simply choosing not to retain the detail, but when I summited three of the peaks for the second time in full visibility, I could recall nothing familiar about the terrain. Despite a hankering to have another go at the classic circuit, the urge to explore routes less travelled is now more compelling. And so it was that I found myself with @the_victorian_mountaineer and @alternative_ascents under an inky sky on the long approach along the Cape Wrath Trail to base camp at Lochan Fhada - sandwiched between Slioch and the southern Fisherfields, a supreme wilderness. After a brutally cold night under canvas, we continued on the Cape Wrath Trail, peeling off at Loch an Nid and climbing the broad quartzite slabs that characterise the eastern face of Sgùrr Bàn. From the summit, a tricky boulder field had to be negotiated before we could pick up the walkers’ path, a steep descent on loose ground to the col with Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair mirrored in the strenuous ascent to its apex. Beinn Tarsuinn was an easy gain by comparison and it was from there that we returned to the beallach and Lochan Fhada, dismantling tents and making our way back on weary feet to Kinlochewe, spirits however reanimated at the prospect of a hot shower and warm bed at Torridon Youth Hostel. #munros #munrobagging #walkhighlands #hillwalkingscotland #womenwhohike #scotlandexplore #scottishhighlands #mountaineeringscotland #hikescotland #mountainlover

I've been putting yesterday's Munros off for a number of years. Creag Mhor and Beinn Heasgarnich are set quite far back and considered remote for the area. They can be approached from Glen Dochart or Glen Lochay. I opted for the latter. The route is famously boggy and lacks any path for a large part of it. To counter some of this and make the best of the day, I had initially planned to do the route Anticlockwise, tackling the bog early. This idea took a beating though when I came over the pass at Glen Ogle and seen the fresh overnight snow coverage. Unable to determine how deep the snow was, and considering that If I had to wade through snow over a bog, the going would be incredibly slow and possibly make the day unsuccessful, I decided to stick with the clockwise route. The going was fast with a 5km ride before doing any climbing. Once I began to make my way up between the crags, I disappeared into the clag and was fully in the zone. Topping out above the clag, I had reached the snow line and now for the first time the summit revealed itself. Looking at the gradient, I was already regretting my decision to go clockwise. Riding off the first summit showed promise, which quickly disappeared, along with any track I was following. Having now lost half of the height I had gained, it was time to get the head down. This climb also showed promise in reverse, there was no doubt In my mind I'd made the wrong choice. Now at the the summit of my 260th Munro, the best part of the day was definitely behind me. From here on out, it was pathless and a case of dodging crags for the little gradient there was. Now only 2km of bog stood between me and the road back out.
