It can feel terrifying to share the content of our intrusive thoughts...even for folks who talk about OCD all the time! As I finish my doctoral work, I was encouraged to integrate more of my personal experience into my research around faith, OCD, and religious scrupulosity. I presented on the new draft today with more lived experience than I am used to offering in the academic setting. It felt vulnerable for so many reasons...and yet also incredibly powerful and transformative - bringing together aspects of my story (as a human, advocate, and professional). I truly mean this...ANYTHING can be compulsive! There was so much awesome discussion on yesterday’s content regarding determining if something is compulsive!! So I thought it might be time for a #repost and update on a graphic I made in October. What makes something a compulsion isn’t about the action...but rather the function behind the action. In fact, something that is value-driven for me might be an exposure for someone else OR even compulsive for someone else. For instance: ⭐ Petting my cats is currently value-driven ⭐ But there was a time that I pet animals repetitively to prove to myself I was a good person (that was compulsive) ⭐ Petting an animal could also be an exposure for someone navigating harm or contamination OCD But it’s ALL about the function!!! It’s about the frequency and the why behind the action, as opposed to the action itself. Does that make sense?! Ever catch yourself mentally rehearsing how you'd navigate the scary scenarios life might throw your way? 🤔 The truth is, I used to be deep in this compulsion! 🙋‍♀️ Spending endless hours planning every detail of how I would handle every possible bad thing that could happen... trying to get rid of discomfort by thinking through every single detail. Guess what? It didn't work. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The more I planned, the more doubts crept in. And I wasn't keeping myself (or anyone) safe! I was just handing over my life to OCD. It was just another way of dodging discomfort. Here's the twist: You don't have to have it all figured out. Embrace the uncertainty, sit with the discomfort, and stick with the ick. 🌪️ The biggest exposure is trusting that, no matter what comes your way, you've got the strength and capability to handle it. I was going back through graphics I made a few years ago and fell right into my own trap, so I wanted to share a little #repostreminder. This is EXACTLY how OCD works when it comes to the attention we give intrusive thoughts. The more we try not to think about something (like a pink elephant), the more it becomes stuck in our brains. (As a side note…check out @ocdopus who has an amazing initiative where a pink elephant stuffed animal is donated to a child in residential for each one purchased). The more we try to stop thinking about intrusive thoughts, the more we think about them! Yes, this includes thoughts about: ⭐Harm ⭐Religion/spirituality ⭐Family ⭐Friends ⭐Pets ⭐Contamination ⭐Gender ⭐Sexual orientation ⭐Morality ⭐Anything else important to you But if you decide to show the thoughts irrelevance, they become way less interesting. For example, if I didn’t write anything about not reading the small letters on my post…you probably would have scrolled right past it without a second thought! I'm so excited to "officially" be back in the office today, with so many exciting things to share about new faith/OCD initiatives coming in 2024 (I'll share soon - I promise!). But in the meantime, I wanted to share a little #repostreminder for you...okay, actually - it's for me, too! 🤷‍♀️ One of my most common cognitive distortions is "discounting the positive." I only do this when it comes to myself. I see the amazing possibilities for everyone else, but my default has historically been to assume everyone secretly hates me and that things will quickly fall apart in my own life. I'm working on challenging this in a big way in 2024 (by simply sticking with the ick)! But as a part of this, I'm also working to stop discounting the positive - where I consider only the negative outcomes as the default when it comes to uncertainty and just to life. Rather, I'm seeking to lean into the fact that things might really just work out...in more beautifully uncertain ways than I could possibly imagine. Uncertainty can be awesome. Oh...and OCD lies. When I'm feeling stuck...wondering how I could possibly stick with the ick while running toward my values...it can be really helpful to remember that my future self is so glad I did the hard thing! 🎉 Sometimes, I'll even ask myself, "Do I still want to be worried about this tomorrow?!" If I don't, it's time to risk all of the scary stuff coming true without continuing to figure it out. In doing that, I know that by tomorrow...most likely this will be out of my mind (even though it seems totally urgent and scary right now!). 🌸 I get it - OCD makes the hard thing (leaning into uncertainty, sitting with discomfort, and sticking with the ick) seem completely negligent. And yet, it's the most responsible thing you can possible do on the journey to reclaiming the big, beautiful, awesome life you were created to live. We all experience intrusive thoughts, which are a normal part of our cognitive process. They range from mild (random and funny) to distressful (scary and disturbing). When intrusive thoughts begin to negatively affect our lives and become more persistent and severe, they can be a symptom of a larger psychiatric disorder. What if... rather than being super upset about getting an intrusive thought... we see each one as an opportunity to make OCD a little smaller? 🤷‍♀️ This is one of my favorite tools, so I thought it was time for a little #repostreminder. Sometimes, this means I physically stand up and shout, "Yes!! I'm so excited I got this intrusive thought, because it gives me a chance to show total irrelevance while I punch OCD in the face!" 🥴 That might sound totally ridiculous, and sometimes I'm "sarcastically excited." And yet, there is power in seeing each intrusive thought as an opportunity. There's empowerment in seeing each stuck point as a moment of choice to step toward recovery. I have had an ongoing headache for the past few weeks, as I abruptly stopped taking my antidepressants out of frustration because although they were helping me mentally, especially with my social anxiety, it was making my insomnia worse, to the point that I wasn’t getting ANY sleep at all. So because I didn’t gradually wean off my meds, and just stopped taking them completely, I have had a headache as a withdrawal symptom. Now, because this headache has lasted longer than usual (usual being 2-3 days), my OCD has come up with this idea that I definitely have cancer. My OCD keeps telling me to see my doctor to take action to ‘just double check’ that I’m all clear. I understand how silly & senseless this is, and will not seek any kind of reassurance, as that never helps me in the long run. But my OCD convinced me of this so much, to the point that I wasn’t even going to post this ‘just in case’. My OCD was telling me not to post this, to prevent looking silly if I did end up having cancer. And to be honest, I’m still scared to post this, but I’m going to do it anyway. Having intrusive thoughts like this are so exhausting, and really send me into a spiral, because my OCD is always in my ear making me second guess everything. Intrusive thoughts are unwanted thoughts, demands, images, sensations, or impulses that occur randomly. We all have them sometimes. I repeat, “EVERYONE EXPERIENCES THEM!” People with OCD attach meaning into their intrusive thoughts. This makes us feel afraid, disgusted, or guilty because of our thoughts and drives us to perform compulsions or avoidance. This is just a little reminder that there isn't a difference between "OCD thoughts" and "regular thoughts." Thoughts are thoughts are thoughts...even the intrusive ones!! (And YES...even THAT one!!!) 🎉 The OCD component is all about the value, urgency, and feelings that attach to the thought...and the way that we respond. It's not about the thought itself or its content. But here's the great news...we can treat ALL thoughts exactly the same (even if these feel different, scary, or urgent because of OCD). Remember, OCD will keep you stuck on the stuff that is the most significant to you in the ickiest ways. But it doesn't mean those thoughts hold any more value than any other thought. Your obsessions are not too bazaar/disturbing/weird to be OCD! Yes...even those. I've received a bunch of questions on this topic recently, so I thought it might be time for a #repostreminder. Intrusive thoughts are just thoughts, and your brain can LITERALLY think of anything. Yes...even that. Your brain is a creative powerhouse, but sometimes that creativity can be hijacked by OCD. Intrusive thoughts can feel like they come out of nowhere, but they are just a manifestation of your brain's natural thought processes. But for folks with OCD...we immediately wonder why we had "that" thought...and it gets stuck because it's something so important to us and in opposition to our values. I know your current theme feels so weird that you worry it couldn't possibly be OCD. But this is just another trick of OCD, and OCD is a liar. Your brain can literally think of anything...so your OCD takes advantage and becomes just as creative as you are. And yet...you are SO MUCH MORE than your OCD. When scary thoughts strike, it can be very jarring and concerning. Moms who experience intrusive thoughts often find themselves wondering what they mean. They ask themselves: “Do these thoughts make me a bad mom?” “Do these thoughts mean that I secretly want to harm my baby?” “Is there something wrong with me?” “Can I even trust myself to care for my child?” It can be hard to separate your thoughts from reality. But thoughts are just thoughts. They are afraid of what these thoughts mean–afraid that they are bad moms, or afraid that others will think they will hurt their baby. Intrusive thoughts are more common than we realize. This is just a friendly reminder that intrusive thoughts are just thoughts (yes...even that one!). Everyone gets them..even folks without OCD. This is a part of the human experience. We have totally random thoughts that pop up in association with and response to the things around us. But for folks with OCD, these thoughts become super sticky!! In particular, the ones that stick are the ones most significant to us and that oppose our values the most. And yet, it doesn't mean they have any additional meaning. Anyone else suffering from one intrusive thought after another? Throughout the day, I keep punishing myself with intrusive thoughts about things that could go terribly wrong for me. Turns out, this is very common among complex trauma survivors. The best way to handle these thoughts is to not engage with them. Acknowledge them as an intrusive thought, and allow them to just float in and out of your brain. Easier said than done. Thank you so much for following along with my #ocdtheme week, where I chatted about all the gross artificial ice cream flavors that make up the same nasty OCD ice cream!! I think it's important to recognize that this was not (by any means) an exhaustive list of themes. Furthermore, themes don't just come alone...they swirl together. I've typically had some combination of: 🍦Harm OCD 🍦Scrupulosity OCD 🍦False Memory OCD 🍦Over-responsibility OCD 🍦Magical Thinking OCD But in reality...it doesn't matter what you call a theme, if it looks "exactly" like someone else's experience, or if your theme overlaps with 5 other themes. This week, I'm excited to share some of the different gross artificial flavors that OCD comes in...while recognizing that regardless of the flavor, it's all OCD! Real Event OCD and False Memory OCD are subtypes that I used to desperately search for information on. And quite honestly, if I saw them listed together...I was so scared that my "false memories" were secretly "real events." Individuals navigating Real Event OCD may say: 💜 But I REALLY did something that wasn't aligned with my values even if it seems really small, so it MUST mean I'm a horrible person. ^^^(OCD is still lying...we are all perfectly imperfect!) Individuals navigating Real Event OCD may say: 💜 What if I did something AWFUL and totally blocked it out/forgot/am just pretending it's OCD? ^^^(This was a big one for me in my journey!) Just like with any form of OCD, the intrusive thoughts vary from person to person...but it's still just another gross artificial flavor of OCD. And yet, I know it feels so real...from the anxiety to the guilt and shame. This is why it's so easy to get caught up in compulsions...but they only make OCD stronger! Harm OCD is a subtype that has been a huge struggle for me throughout my life. It's important to remember that OCD is ego-dystonic, and these intrusive thoughts completely oppose an individual's identity, values, and desire. That's what makes them so distressing! Individuals navigating Harm OCD may wonder: 💜 What if I'm a dangerous person? 💜 What if I hit someone with my car? 💜 What if I wrote something offensive or start shouting obscenities? 💜 What I physically harm those I care about? 💜 What if I committed a crime and forgot? 💜 Literally anything your mind can come up with! Just like with any form of OCD, the intrusive thoughts vary from person to person...but it's still just another gross artificial flavor of OCD. And yet, I know it feels so real...from the anxiety to the guilt and shame. This is why it's so easy to get caught up in compulsions...but they only make OCD stronger! I used to be terrified that giving myself permission to be happy or experience anything fun...would lead to absolutely horrible things happening. 😯 Truly, I thought that letting my guard down opened myself, those I loved, and the world up to total destruction in so many ways. Has OCD ever made you feel like this? 🤷‍♀️ Even though I could recognize the irrationality on some level, it felt so real...and it felt too irresponsible to "selfishly" let myself live a beautiful life. But OCD was lying. I'll say it again for the folks in the back: OCD was lying!!! It was lying to me, and it's lying to you. ⬅️ Giving myself permission to be happy didn't lead to horrible things. Rather, it led to living my life in beautiful, full ways! ☀️ And even in an uncertain world, self-punishment and martyrdom don't keep us safe. They just take away our ability to appreciate the gift of life in the present. I believe with all of my heart that in an uncertain world...you can handle anything that emerges (both beautiful and really tough things). But we don't have to plan for every possibility at this moment, and we certainly don't have to make ourselves miserable as a warped protective factor. Here's my challenge for you today: Give yourself permission to keep returning to the present while giving yourself permission to do something you enjoy (regardless of what OCD says!). Tips on how to deal with intrusive thoughts. Intrusive thoughts are like unexpected and sometimes weird ideas that pop into your head, even when you don't want them to. It's okay to ask for help when you need it, and you don't have to deal with these thoughts all on your own. People who care about you are there to support you. In so many conversations with Jewish clients this week preparing for the High Holy Days, anticipatory anxiety emerged around having intrusive thoughts on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. I recognize that these holy times can be particularly challenging for individuals with OCD, as they are held with such significance. Regardless of your religious/spiritual tradition...this is so common! And yet, that is the EXACT reason you are noticing your intrusive thoughts (because it's a topic significant to you). Y'all...intrusive thoughts are just thoughts - regardless of the day of the year. They are totally automatic, and we just happen to notice them when they're about stuff that's important to us. I'm a minister, and I totally noticed intrusive thoughts during religious observances. And that's okay! Because: 💜 It's okay to have intrusive thoughts on holy days or in the midst of religious observances. By using our #erptherapy and #acttherapy skills, we can allow intrusive thoughts to be there without judgment (even - or perhaps especially - during religious observances or on holy days). Intrusive thoughts are LITERALLY junk mail that pops up in our brains. Every single person gets intrusive thoughts (just like we all have spam pop up in our email inbox). And yet...for many of us with OCD, our spam filter doesn't weed out the junk mail effectively. Quite the opposite, we seem to have a special "filter" turned on that brings any of the scary spam that means the most to us to the very TOP of our inbox. Talk about stressful! 😅 And yet, this doesn't mean these thoughts are any more true or valid than for anyone else. And like we quickly move junk mail that slips through the spam filter to the trash without a second thought, we can disregard intrusive thoughts using our treatment tools. And over time, our internal spam filter will start to recognize the stuff it previously thought was important...is most likely just junk, and begin to file it as such! ☀️ Are you ready to treat your intrusive thoughts like junk mail today?
