Differing opinions are always interesting to read. I thought the coexisted versus separation debate among Jinnah and Gandhi reflected the difficulty of decision making and complexity of finding a cohesive medium. An expectation that stuck with me was the emphasis on literature. I never really thought of literature as a defining factor, but then I was reminded how central a shared literature is to sharing culture, reason, and experiences. Furthermore, literature is often the foundation for history and pride that can not only be shared but last longer than a lifetime. Even though Gandhi hoped that “these two communities [could] reconcile and unite and made to feel that their interests are common and they are marching together for a common goal,” the different social orders and way of life really inspired Jinnah to believe that “Hindus and muslims were more than two religions – they were two nations.” (500) #Jinnah #Gandhi #twonations? -EGD

In the Gandhi-Jinnah debate, it was fascinating to start with the section of Musalmans getting a portion of the seats in the national legislature, during which it is repeatedly mentioned that the differences are religious while still being sons of the land. We then transition to the next section, which mentions them as two separate "nationalities." However, I do agree with the criticism of the British approach, where they expected the two to be molded into one without additional reform. This reminds me a little bit about the approach taken in the constitution by Dr Ambedkar in having provisions for the "Scheduled Class" and saw the provisions as an interim solution while the distinctions settled over time. Jinnah indexed heavily on the past in emphasizing that centralized control had never been established in the region; however, one of the characteristics of the new nation would be democracy, and the ideals of democracy could have been the standing point for enforcing ways to bring together two disparate groups. Quaid-e-Azam House or Flagstaff House is a museum in Karachi, Sindh (2022). It is the former residence of the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam, Mohammad Ali Jinnah (1876 - 1948). It consists of the main building, an outside kitchen, other buildings (not open to public) and a display of cars formerly own by Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah. There is no entrance fees but one has to take a guide to view it. It is open daily except on Wednesdays. Timings are from 9am to 4pm with a 1 hr lunch break. 🧵The history of #India and # #Pakistan is a complex tale of political aspirations, communal tensions, & ongoing efforts to improve relations. The partition of #British India in 1947 and the subsequent events have had a profound impact on the region. The region that is now #Pakistan was part of the #Indus Valley Civilization, one of the world's earliest urban civilizations. This civilization flourished between 2500 BC and 1900 BC in the northwestern region of the #Indian subcontinent. Over the centuries, the region was ruled by various dynasties and empires, including the #Maurya, #Gupta, and #Mughal Empires. The Mughal Empire, in particular, left a lasting legacy on the region's culture, architecture, and administrative systems. In 1858, the #British Crown assumed direct control over the #Indian subcontinent, ruling it as the British Raj. The #Raj's policies, including the partition of #Bengal in 1905, sowed the seeds of communal tensions that would later contribute to the partition of India. The All #India #Muslim League, founded in 1906, advocated for the rights of Muslims in #British #India. The idea of #Pakistan as a separate Muslim state was first articulated by Sir Muhammad Iqbal in 1930 and later developed by Choudhary Rahmat Ali. The #Indian National #Congress, led by Mahatma #Gandhi and Jawaharlal #Nehru, sought independence for India from British rule. However, the Muslim League, led by Muhammad Ali #Jinnah, argued for a separate Muslim state to protect the rights of Muslims. The #Lahore Resolution, passed by the Muslim League in 1940, called for the creation of independent states in the northwestern and eastern zones of #India, where Muslims were in the majority. This became known as the #Pakistan Resolution. After #WorldWar II, the British government realized it could no longer hold on to its #Indian empire & agreed to grant independence. The Indian Independence Act was passed by the British Parliament on #July 18, 1947, & set #August 15, 1947, as the date for the transfer of power. The Act also provided for the partition of #British #India into two independent dominions: India and #Pakistan.

Jinnah’s presidential address to the Muslim League at Lahore in March 1940 shows the true complexity of the subcontinent of India. Much of the Indian Independence movement presents a view of a homogenous people opposing British imperialism. In Jinnah’s speech, he demonstrates that India is made up of multiple nations of people who each have their own comprehensive world views. Furthermore, for Jinnah, these worldviews are contrasting enough that there is no possibility for the views of Islam and Hinduism to converge without drastic alterations to those belief systems. Jinnah’s argument prompts many questions. How did this incredible pluralism exist in India for so long before British unification and to what degree were these communities integrated versus simply coexisting? Was this pluralism relatively peaceful or has there been significant Muslim Hindu conflict throughout Indian history? Unfortunately, we have seen that Jinnah’s two state solution has not resulted in peaceful, cooperating states but rather a very precarious and confrontational relationship between India and Pakistan. Last week, we studied Jinnah’s vision of the “two-nation theory” and how he argued against Gandhi. During a speech in 1943, Jinnah expressed his confidence in the progress that “Mussalmas, as a nation, have made” in the past three years. A closer look at those years shows us how Western politics was able to shape the two nations in British India. In 1939, during World War I, the allies requested soldiers from Gandhi and the Indian National Congress Under the Cripps Commission. When they claimed to speak for all of India and refused to provide soldiers, the Muslim league saw this as an opportunity to push for a separate nation by offering to send soldiers to the Allies.
