Took ourselves away for a long weekend a week or so ago. Based ourselves just outside Aberfoyle near Stirling. We love this area, and this was our 3rd time staying here since our very first van was converted back in 2020. Treated ourselves to a Loch Cruise on the stunning Loch Katrine. ****Shoutouts**** Pitched up at the brilliant @coblelandcampsite now with new management since we were last there. The coffee and bacon butties from @coull_beans who have a quirky little cart based at the campsite were excellent, and the pizza from @stirling_pizza who arrive in their pizza making van at the campsite late Saturday afternoons was probably one of the best pizzas we've ever had. Creating the route for the weekend was such a welcome distraction for the last couple of weeks. Every chance I had, the route accidentally popped up on my screen and my mind would shift to finding tracks that would deviate or just make that little difference. I wanted the route to start with the Loch Katrine Drovers road. It began as we peeled off the familiar road around #lochkatrine , the ground steadily getting looser and steeper until it stopped trying altogether and the climbing continued over bogs and bouncing moss and marsh. From this point, we were singing the praises of @silasgold1 . I’d asked him if it’s easy to navigate over this section and he pressed, “follow my line”. We were glad we did. Predictably more brazen, Marc ahead of me cleared more than I could at points until out of view came an “argh” (or something to that effect). His front wheel had disappeared into squidgy blackness and the back of his bike followed over the top of him. A wee pause to appreciate that ‘that bit’ really does go deeper than you’d imagine and we pressed on, finding ourselves on perhaps the nicest gravel descent I’ve ever experienced in Scotland (I’m still giving that claim some thought but honestly, it was swoopy, not bum clenchingly steep, loose enough to not permit snot rockets at the same time and kind enough to be able to look up and behold). I was pleased with the route but even better was sharing the thinking and decisions about changes as we went. Marc’s suggestion to add Glen Kendrum and Dubh balanced the improvised road sections. That’s one very rewarding climb up there. Someone explain to me why it took until yesterday to make my way to Loch Katrine 😅 I've known for years that it's a scenic loch, I've been in the area many times, recommended this very day trip to others - but somehow I never managed to do it myself! Well, that's finally over!!! 🙌🏻 I drove to Loch Katrine from Glasgow (about 1h 20min & extremely scenic), hired an e-bike from @katrinewheelz and cycled 14 miles along the loch to Stronachlachar. It takes about 2 hours and there's quite a bit of up and down - the e-bike was much appreciated! 🚴🏻♀️ The @thepiercafe_stronachlachar has a sunny patio and panoramic veranda - it's the perfect place to wait for the @thesteamshipsirwalterscott to take you back to Trossachs Pier! 🚢 If you're smart, you start with the morning boat to Stronachlachar and cycle back - that way, you're not tied to make it there at a specific time or have to wait for the afternoon boat. I just mixed up the times, so we couldn't do it that way... Afterwards, stay in the area for a hike up Ben A'an, a walk around the Forest Lodge, a wee wander through Aberfoyle or to stay overnight at one of the camping spots in the @lomondtrossachs national park! A wee trip on Friday up to the #trossochs way the old man and @ayrshirejax first stop a wee drive around the #threelochsforestdrive and a stop on #lochachray for some lunch. Steamship Sir Walter Scott departing Trossachs Pier, Loch Katrine this morning in some welcome sunshine. The steamer was built in 1899 and began service in 1900, she resumed sailing last summer after a major restoration. She sails three times a day, every day during spring and summer, departing for a return trip to Stronachlachar at 10.30am and 2.30pm. Loch Katrine is very much a childhood memory of mine - it comes from a kiwi cookbook called Edmonds Sure To Rise that most homes I have ever visited in New Zealand have a copy of in some shape or form. When I was a little dot my mum and I had many favourites. This is one - a simple pastry base with raspberry jam, currants, speedy sponge and thin lemon icing - that I still make today. I have switched it up by using canned peaches instead of the currants to give a Peach Melba vibe. A slice of this on a sunny spring day is perfection. Where to start……well I will start at the end of the most amazing week away in Scotland 😍 I have just finished a wonderfully inspiring and creative awakening retreat with @anzbau on the shore of Loch Katrina and it was everything and more than I hoped for. A small group of 7 in a private house overlooking the loch. Photography mornings and creative art afternoons, evenings in front of the log fire and amazing food. I have a million images to share so am a bit overwhelmed right now 🫣 needless to say they will populate my feed for the next few days.
