As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s painful for some, for a multitude of reasons. If you’ve lost a child, I can’t even begin to imagine the boundless depth of your pain. Or, perhaps you’ve always wanted a child of your own, but it wasn’t possible for physical reasons or life circumstances. You might be grieving a mother who was your confidante, the person who loved you unconditionally, and was your best friend. Or maybe your relationship with your mother was toxic or difficult, and you are/were estranged. As a bereavement group facilitator for young kids, I learned that if children are old enough to love, they are old enough to grieve. At the Center for Grieving Children in Portland, bereavement groups begin at age 3. Although we know this to be true, people will often ask me, "Why is a child's grief so often disenfranchised?" This can be due to several factors: Limited Understanding: Young children may not fully comprehend the concept of death or the permanence of loss. As a result, their grief may not be recognized or understood by adults around them. Focus on Parents: In many cases, the primary focus of support and attention after a sibling's death is on the parents. The grief of the surviving siblings may be overlooked or minimized. Expectations of Resilience: There may be societal expectations for children to be resilient and "bounce back" quickly from difficult experiences, including the loss of a sibling. This can lead to their grief being downplayed or dismissed. Difficulty in Expressing Grief: Children may struggle to express their emotions or may not feel comfortable doing so. We know that recognizing and supporting the grief of young children who have lost a sibling is crucial for their emotional well-being. It's so important that we provide age-appropriate explanations of death, create opportunities for open communication, and offer resources that can help validate their experiences and facilitate healthy grieving processes. Beyond “I Don’t Know What To Say.” How to Comfort the Grieving Grief is a wall, and it can, if allowed, divide us. There are so many ways to approach this wall of grief. * Some are overwhelmed by its dimensions, so they walk away. * Some stand and wait for those who are on the other side to carve an opening for them. * Some look for a window to check in but not enter. * Some knock on its door but just can’t go through it. * And some walk right through that door and join you. Now that I’m on this side of the wall, I understand each approach to grief. Grief is a profoundly personal journey, and there’s no universal manual on how to navigate it. I believe that while each person’s experience of grief is unique, sharing what we’ve experienced and what’s been helpful for us can offer valuable insights and comfort to others who may be supporting a loved one in pain. In my recent blog I've shared what has helped me, understanding the different way our grief has been approached and a greater knowledge of compassion than I have ever known for all of them. Here is one perspective from the article. I’ve encountered the mindset: * “I don’t want to say the wrong thing.” I understand this is because we don’t want to say anything that could add to the pain. I would like to offer a different perspective. Saying nothing can be worse than saying the wrong thing. Acknowledging my pain and sharing that you miss Annie, too. has been helpful for me. What has helped you when you've experienced grief due to various losses, including the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, shattered dreams or expectations, or transitions in life stages? Today, the rain makes it harder to find the sun- 🌻 I’ve never read Nahum. But I heard Jill Sullivan read chapter one, verse seven this morning on the While We're Waiting podcast. So I started reading Nahum- Before verse seven, God reminded me that he is the one who fights for me. That He has extreme anger - wrath towards the enemy, infact He is furious!
