🥁 Drumroll… ‼️ 🔥 We are so excited to share that we now have our Beer & Wine carryout license, and are beginning to stock up with an amazing selection of curated and unique beers and wines. Our first delivery of wine arrived today. As you can see from the picture, we have a decent selection of whites, reds, rosé, and Prosecco. We selected a couple amazing wines from each varietal, but it is not an overwhelming selection. We intentionally chose wines that are organic, sustainable, and/or biodynamic. We will be adding some locally produced wines as well from the Delmarva area. And don’t worry, we tasted all of these to make sure they are quite delicious. 😉 We are sure you will love them. Sept Obeideh Skin Contact 2022 You might be familar with the Obeideh indigenous grape from Lebanon (which is also part of the Chateau Musar white). Some say Obeideh is a Chardonnay cousin. The skin contact maceration totally elevates the Obeideh grape to another level. I felt the wine was like a wild unrestrained ponny. Beautiful color. White flowers nose, a good grip in the mouth followed by flavors of tamarind mixed with good minerality and low tanins. Subtle complexity + elegance. This wine made me “think”. Intriguing at first, I was transported because it was unlike anything I’ve had before. Grapes from Zahle around 900m. Made in the Batroun region by winemaker Maher Harb who is pioneering biodynamic/low-sulfite winemaking in Lebanon. Sooo natural wine is getting popular in our part of the world, and while we absolutely love it, we feel like some misconceptions, or controversies just to be PC, should be discussed (so adamant that we have to make a whole post about it apparently…) We have seen this in so many marketing message, but sulfites are not as bad as we make it out to be, well… not unless you are allergic. There is no scientific linkage to sulfite and your Sunday hangover headaches (yet at least). Many famous natural winemakers still put minimal doses for protection purposes. So excusez-moi, I’d take a stable, low SO2 bottle over a spoiled one from wine country, please and thank you. And NO, natural wine is not good for our health just because it has zero sulfites. Now onto the flavors. PSA: Natty, funky and kombucha-like are NOT general characteristics of natural wines. It’s like describing colors using only RGB and forgetting about the 50 shades of grey. Natural wines are just as capable of exhibiting the same range of flavors as conventional ones. In fact, we have drunk bottles that showcase exceptional balance, complexity, and freshness without any off-putting traits. In the end, it depends on what flavor profiles we prefer, and there are more than 3 to choose from. In case it hasn't been clear, we are a big advocate and a believer of the philosophy behind natural wine 🥂. It’s important to note though that natural wine is a labelling term that can have different interpretations; and practices also vary among producers. So as the natural wine movement continues to evolve and gains popularity, it’s always good to have a constant, open-minded dialogue. As for us, instead of the label being put on the bottle, natural wine or not, we’d like to place greater emphasis on the story of each individual winemaker, their farming and winemaking practices - that’s where it gets interesting. Trousseau - Domaine des Marnes Blanches 2021 Wow, what a nose and great color that transport you instantly to the south of Jura. This Trousseau smelled like a fresh bouquet of cherries, cranberry & pomegranate. It kept giving throughout. Followed by an earthy, gamy feeling on the palate. Bit of barnyard trace. I hadn’t had such a great Trousseau for a while. Perhaps a textbook Trousseau with all its youth vibrancy. From the village of Saint Agnès where Geraud and Pauline Fromont began Domaine des Marnes Blanches in 2006. Both are native Jurassians. This cuvée comes from 5-40-year-old vines planted on red and white marl. The grapes are fermented as whole clusters for ten days before being pressed off into 225L barrel to finish fermentation. After a nine months élevage, the wine is bottled without fining or filtration. No SO2 is added. #jurawine #lowsulfitewine #trousseau
FUN FACT FRIDAY ~ ❓Did you know that #sulfites are naturally occurring within grapes, and lots of other fruits and veggies, and they help a ton when it comes to preserving freshness and preventing oxidation. It's flat-out impossible to create wine completely free of sulfites. So sulfites are pretty awesome… in moderation. A #notsofunfact is that in the U.S. wines can have up to 3️⃣5️⃣0️⃣ppm of sulfites! Yikes! Thankfully one of the pillars of Scout & Cellar’s #cleancraftedcommitment is our wine must not contain more than 100ppm of sulfites - just enough to promote freshness and prevent oxidation.
