BE OPEN, BE SURPRISED AND LEARN NEW THINGS! Many many years ago, I used to keep ordering my favorite wines and favorite grapes all the time.. I didn´t want to be surprised, I wanted to get what I knew I already liked. It was one way of living of course, but one oh so boring way! Finally I snapped out of it and starting to experience all sorts of wines. Some great, others less so, but all interesting as long as I kept out of the cheap, mass produced generic ones. But too many people still act as I used to, and that´s the reason why something like 90% of the wines produced comes from the 10 most popular grapes! That´s such a pity thinking of how many exciting grapes there are in the world! Also the indigenous grapes are often very well suited to the areas they originally grew in. It was a reason they were planted there in the first place! If we don´t dare to try out grapes we have never heard of they will die out, and so many are just about to! Its thanks to devoted winemakers who want to stay true to their region and origins they are still in use. Let´s help them out shall we? One of all these often exciting grapes is Vijariego Blanco or Diego as it is also called. It´s from Spain and more or less exclusively cultivated on the Canary Islands. It´s a grape with very high acidity and has been used as a blending partner together with the more outspoken Malvasia, but nowadays it´s also used for single varietals. It´s suitable for barrel fermentation and can produce complex wines with fruity notes, spice and and flowers. If you let it age you are supposed to find flavors of honey, caramel and nuts, but I never had the patience to wait that long, so that´s still to be experienced for me! This well made wine on 100% Vijariego comes from Vulcano de Lanzarote. I like it served with food, for example vegetarian or fish dishes with a lot of flavors, not to delicate! Twee nieuwe vondsten van Caves São João uit Portugal: uit de Dão een witte blend van Encruzado, Bical, Cerceal en Malvasia Fina. Een bijna Chablis-esque mineraliteit, puurheid en ziltigheid. Maar dan in een Portugees jasje. Al is dat jasje wat atypisch door het enorm frisse en niet-zondoorstoofde karakter. Goede zuren, bescheiden alcohol en mooie lengte. Een verfijnde wijn voor een zeer vriendelijk prijsje. Nu alleen de schaal en schelpdieren nog... Ook nieuw: bubbels 🍾. En ja, die komen uiteraard uit Bairrada waar al sinds jaar en dag de beste (en de meeste) bubbels van Portugal vandaan komen. Quinta do Poço do Lobo Espumante is op basis van de inheemse Arinto en de wereldberoemde Chardonnay, een fijn duo. Op de Champagnemethode gemaakt, maar absoluut met een eigen Portugees karakter. • Bodegas Nivarius specialises in the production of white wines from cool-climate vineyards in Rioja. The estate vineyard is also a heritage-recovery project, which aims to re-establish some of the rarer indigenous white varieties from La Rioja. • This white Rioja is made from 100% Tempranillo Blanco, a mutation of the red Tempranillo grape variety. The wine was matured in stainless-steel vat for 4 months on its fine lees, with bâtonnage three times per week to obtain volume.
De wijnen van Domaine La Terrasses d'Elise uit Languedoc zijn inmiddels door zowel liefhebbers als sommeliers ontdekt en omarmd. Tel daarbij op dat de oplage per wijn enorm beperkt is (door kleine wijngaarden en lage rendementen) en je kan je voorstellen dat wij enorm blij zijn dat we dit jaar weer diverse cuvées hebben mogen ontvangen. Wijnmaker Xavier Braujou van La Terrasse de'Elise is gevestigd in het dorpje Aniane en heeft twee wel heel bekende buren: Granges des Peres en Mas de Daumas Gassac. Maar ook Xavier is in relatief korte tijd tot de absolute top van de Languedoc geklommen. Hij bereikte deze positie door vanaf de start zijn eigen stijl te ontwikkelen en aan te houden. In de wijngaard werkt hij met uiterste zorg voor de natuur: biologisch, met biodynamische elementen, en met zeer lage rendementen (20-25 hl/ha). Daarnaast zijn veel van zijn wijnen monocepages - waardoor hij zijn wijnen op de markt brengt als IGP d'Herault (i.p.v. AOP, waar blends verplicht zijn). Alle wijnen krijgen de tijd die ze volgens Xavier nodig hebben met daarbij behorende rijping op RVS, oudere barriques of op fles. Zijn beroemde 'Pradel' (100% Cinsault) was de wijn waarmee de faam begon. Maar inmiddels is er een behoorlijke rits aan cuvées bijgekomen. Allen ronduit indrukwekkend, altijd elegant en vol finesse. A ‘trip to Italy’ last night. Our first taste of Elisabetta Foradori’s 2016 Morei Cilindrica, 100% Teroldego from the Dolomite region of Northern Italy. This is a grape variety we’re not familiar with but it was an instant hit. Very fruit forward with black fruits, floral notes and hints of spice. Tierra de Leon ● Pardevalles ‘Albarín’ 2022: 100% Albarin, niet te verwarren met Albariño, is een uniek glas. Spaanse aromatiek, mooie zuren en fruit van grapefruit, peer en anijs. Zeer complex en compleet. ● Pardevalles 'Gamonal' 2020: 100% Prieto Picudo met 12 maanden houtrijping (frans + amerikaans). Vol, veel rood & zwart fruit, goede zuren en fijne tannine. Prachtig elegant. Ribera del Duero ● 3 Ases ‘Joven’ 2021: 100% Tempranillo in een atypische stijl (maar daardoor des te lekker). Super licht van kleur, fruitig en elegant in de smaak. There are some incredible wines coming out of Romania at the moment, and this is one of them from @aureliavisinescu It's made from the indigenous grape Feteasca Regala, which is grown in the hills of the Dealu Mare region. Feteasca Regala is a light-skinned grape variety found throughout Eastern Europe, and in particular in Romania. It is one of three varieties in this part of the world named Feteasca, which means "maiden" in Romanian. This is a refreshing wine, with ripe citrus flavours, but it also has underlying richness and a touch of spice. It is particularly food friendly and pairs perfectly with seafood, spicy dishes and salads. The hilly Montefalco region of Umbria in Central Italy is home to this deeply tannic, woodsy powerhouse of a wine starring the local Sagrantino grape. Montefalco Sagrantino owes its surging presence to the Caprai family, the region’s top producer, who nurtured it from mid-twentieth-century obscurity to DOCG status by 1992. Thanks to their efforts, Montefalco Sagrantino has finally arrived as one of Umbria’s greatest assets, just in time for its 400th birthday. The wine must be 95% made from the local Sagrantino grape and aged at least 37 months to give its rough edges time to soften. Nieuwe jaargangen uit de Savoie! De familie Masson maakt al meer dan 200 jaar wijn in Apremont. Momenteel staan Jean-Claude Masson en zijn zoon Nicolas aan het roer. Zij worden gezien als de beste wijnmakers van het dorp. Apremont is de thuisbasis van druif Jacquère, een druif die in de verkeerde handen nogal dun en scherp kan worden. Maar de familie Masson weet wel raad met dit druifje. Het eindresultaat is dan ook altijd een wijn die mooi in balans, ietwat romig maar zonder dat de fijne zuurgraad verloren gaat. En de oude stokken die de familie bezit dragen daar ook zeker aan bij. Alle wijnen gaan op RVS en zijn dus zonder houtrijping. Beschikbare cuvees: ● 2022 Apremont 'Vieilles Vignes Traditionelle': 100% Jacquère van meer dan 80 jaar oude stokken. Droog, rins en mooi sterfruit. Zeer verfrissend, elegant en toch een hele zachte afdronk. ● 2019 Apremont 'Lisa': 100% Jacquère genoemd naar de dochter van Jean-Claude. Door de aantal jaren flesrijping heeft deze wijn wat mooie ontwikkelde mineralige en ziltige tonen. Slank maar niet eenvoudig of licht. ● 2020 Apremont ‘La Centenaire’: 100% Jacquère van 100+ jaar oude stokken, en dat proef je: intens, lang met verfijnd wit en groen fruit. Super complex en zeer beperkt beschikbaar. ● 2021 Roussette de Savoie 'Cuvée Exceptionelle': 100% Altesse van een mini wijngaard (0.5 hectare, 70+ jaar oude stokken). Frappato is an indigenous red Sicilian grape variety , mostly found in the south-east area of the island (province of Siracusa and Ragusa). The names recall it’s fruity flavors (frappato=fruttato); when vinified pure, it usually age in still tank and produce wines with a vibrant ruby red color, medium/light body and scents of red fruits and red flowers. Exactly as the one produced by @mandrarossawines, which can also be served slightly cool to match with fish based dishes and hot summer days.
