Betty's advocacy and documentary work, especially in the Tres Colonias neighborhoods and the Museo de las Tres Colonias, have significantly uplifted Latino and Hispanic voices in our state. This is a personal project, a series about a girl getting into a dream which is a museum of memory. It’s a museum room full of “great people”. Each one is staying in their little glass houses, doing their stuff. But they are not real person, they are only made by people’s memory. In outer space, are the great inventions, some of them are still being used, and others are living in history.
From the distinctive Botero's sculptures to the posh neighborhoods with breathtaking views, Medellin enchanted us. Human beings are capable of terrible actions, but also of amazing acts of courage, putting their own lives on the line to save others'. In 1943, right after the armistice between Italy and the Allied armies put Italy under Nazi occupation, a group of 300 Jews was rescued and saved by the church of Assisi along with many citizens. Assisi, hometown of Saint Francis, has always been a symbol of peace and fraternity. Starting today, and through June 8, the Istituto Italiano Di Cultura in New York hosts "Il Museo della Memoria, Assisi 1943-1944": an exhibition dedicated to the brave ones who made the miracle. Don Aldo Brunacci, former founder of the Opera Casa Giovanni who over the years has kept this memory alive, the then bishop Monsignor Giuseppe Placido Nicolini who pulled the strings of the clandestine organization, Father Rufino Niccacci, friar minor, guardian father of the convent of San Damiano, the religious orders, the conventual friar Father Michele Todde, and all the others (as Luigi and Trento Brizi, the Assisi printers who printed the false documents for the Jews) who did their utmost to save so many people, otherwise destined for deportation. ~ Portrait of a chair. And a father. Designed by Daddy — the artist, the designer, the engineer, the scientist, the eternally restless and curious one. He wore each of those skins with a nonchalance that underplayed his many talents. . Conceived as a set of four verandah chairs, they were designed by him nearly 40 years ago and made in the garage of my childhood home by one of the many skilled carpenters he mentored over the years. A timber technologist and wood scientist by profession, his fascination for all things wood, especially local varieties, took on the form of furniture projects around the house every now and then. While these chairs remained with the family, they hadn’t been used in years and sat languishing in my Mom’s store room. I couldn’t be happier for the timely epiphany I had to rehome them! A quick repolishing and reupholstery job later they now sit in my new living room like they belong. . My Thatha having his morning coffee sitting on one of these chairs before wearing his shoes and heading off for his walk, my Avva exchanging recipes and gossip with neighbors who would drop in for a quick chat, informal work meetings, basically anything that didn’t warrant the more private living room were all witnessed on these chairs. And then ofcourse there were many hours of my adolescent and teenage years spent twisting the coiled cable of the black rotary dial phone that sat next to one these chairs and chatting, often whispering, like our life depended on it, discussing homework, exams and the travails of life with besties from school in the early years, soon replaced by boyfriends a few years down the line — it’s incredible how vivid these memories remain to date! . Not the most comfortable for sitting for long periods of time, a reason why they were abandoned at some point in the later years, they are more objects of material memory in my home now. Something that bears my father’s stamp, a vignette of my childhood home that I miss more and more with each passing year — an heirloom I can continue to use everyday. And for the conversations I have with him in my head now, 10 years after he has passed on.

The room where the exhibition "The Yugoeslavia Folder," which documented the renewed connections and friendships between Clemente Padín and now-ex-Yugoslav mail artists, took place at the @museodelamemoria.uruguay in Montevideo. The room "is devoted to the memory of the dictatorship and how the people produced resistance to the dictatorship," says @franciscotomsich, the project's creator. . In the middle of the room, pots and pans hang from the ceiling. Uruguayans banged on casseroles like these on balconies and streets in protest against the oppressive government. Tomsich first wanted to remove them for the duration of his exhibition. Then he learned that Serbs in the 1990s banged pots and pans from their windows and balconies to drown out the sound of the main evening newscast on the government-run TV channel. So the pots and pans stayed. . BACK IN THE "YUGOESLAVIA FOLDER", 9 The room given to The “Yugoeslavia” folder at the Museum of Memory usually hosts the “Popular Resistance” section of the institution’s permanent exhibition, summoning different kinds of documents and objects “produced to confront, resist and denounce the dictatorial regime”: leaflets, publications, journals, magazines from various banned social or leftist organizations, improvised or hand-made flyers and so on. One of the pieces on display there is a collection of old pots and pans hanging from the room’s ceiling. It alludes to the caceroleadas [cacerola = pot], a mode of collective demonstration against the regime done by banging pots and pans that became very popular (and effective) in the last years of the dictatorship. While mounting the show, I was confronted with the decision of whether to remove them or not, since their imposing presence was evidently neither visually nor discursively in dialogue with the elements I was arranging for the exhibition, but at the same time they look just too accurate, too fused with the space, almost immovable. On 4th December 2019 I wrote an e-mail to a friend in Serbia in which I mentioned, among other things, the pots. His answer included a comment on the photo of the installation that I have sent to him: “we had a similar practice during Milosević times. people banged pots from their windows and terraces at 19:30 each day - when the central news program would start airing on the national TV - and would bang them for 20 minutes or so till the program ended”. After reading this, I just printed and framed the four sheets of our exchange of e-mails and I hanged them from the wall close to the installation of pots, now re-activated and re-signified by an easy-to-grasp, poetical and truthful symbolical bridge built between the contemporary critical contexts of the studied phenomena in both countries represented in the exhibition. In the 1970s and 80s, when South Africa was deeply divided by Apartheid, Chile was going through a crisis of its own half a world away. General Augusto Pinochet had seized power in a military coup, executed the former president, and was hunting down dissenters to his far-right authoritarian regime. So to mark Mandela Day, my travel post this week recalls an emotional meeting in Chile with a friend of the Desaparecidos (disappeared) who’s still looking for answers. I met her in Santiago’s Museum of Memory and Human Rights, their equivalent of our Apartheid Museum, which honours the thousands who were killed, tortured or forced into exile by the brutal dictatorship. Santiago today buzzes with a quiet vibrancy. It’s big enough to be lively and small enough to navigate easily, with a central core of pretty historic buildings. Near the Central Market you’ll find a row of fortune-tellers sitting in colourful booths on the pavement, with businessmen queuing to have their fortunes read as superstition meets sophistication. One evening I lost myself in the backstreets and followed the music to Plaza de Armas, where a nine-piece band was in full swing on a bandstand. Couples from the audience came forward to dance impromptu tangos, and nearby, spectators were clustered around 20 open air tables staging the regular evening chess tournament. "The Kitchen: Jun, Hiromi, Kei, Nata, Tomomi and Isamu" To some of the greatest chefs and artists in japan. In my culture and religion, feeding another person is one of the greater deeds you can do. These 6 chefs (sadly I did not get a chance to photograph Nata-san, but one day!) fed 50 people 3 times a day for 2 weeks. Fed us truly some of the best food I have ever had. Vegan food, Barbecues, Pumpkins, Chicken sashimi, Pasta approved by an italian... A feast every meal. If you are ever in Japan, I hope you have the privilege of eating their art.
