Post 1,090: Martha and the Muffins (Dec 2023) I was living and working in the East End of London in the late 1990s as an ancestry VISA immigrant from Toronto when the unlikely subject of Martha and the Muffins came up in conversation at my place of work. A colleague of mine, I suppose knowing that the band were Canadian like I am, told me how much she loved Echo Beach. That song had been the band’s sole hit in Britain and in other regions other than Canada. It was a great point of reference for me and my Londoner colleague, both of us working very boring jobs as office clerks. That conversation got me thinking about that song and that band. I’d grown up hearing their singles on the radio and loved them in the 1980s when I was a school kid turned teenager. But by the next decade, I’d kind of thought of them as something of a cultural given. While away and out of my cultural context, I began to be more mindful of what Canadian artists had accomplished on the world stage. As for this band, they are pioneers of Canadian art rock, hitting early as proponents of authentically homegrown punk and new wave out of Toronto’s fertile Queen Street West scene. And they had way more than just one song in them. Todays track is Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins. A keyboard pulse emerges from the ether triggering that lovely riff which twings along, bobbing up in all the right places. The drum and bass pitch up to kick things forward before the keyboard is back to add a touch of fairground as we head for the vocal. A Martha is in - there are two - with an eager but slightly unremarkable vocal but it fits perfectly in the track - the spit and polish of the bed requires an urgency which is there in spades. There is a change up - we get a lovely ascending vocal line which then slips into a sax snippet which resets us for the next verse. There is real pace here and you can’t help but move along to the bounce and drive of the track. We get the frantic ascend again but this time we move into a proper smooth sax solo working a lounge feel. The vocal is back and it’s time for the cherry in this track. It’s a brace of Martha’s now chanting into the distance and overlapping as the sax continues to soar. It’s one of those - you can’t help but sing along and as a Martha drops into a counter vocal, you have to garble out both parts as we head to the fade. Simple New Wave excellence - nothing on fire here, just a beautifully constructed slice of bouncy enthusiasm that will get you on your feet. Poonam Khanna | ARAS Student Feature Poonam Khanna is an emerging Toronto-based artist that works predominantly with acrylic paint. Exploring the world through paint and showcasing her work in exhibitions across the GTA, Poonam invites us to look at the world differently. This takes shape through water, raindrops and reflections. When it rains, Poonam will take photographs through glass - car windows, bus shelters as well as a piece of glass from an old picture frame. Her paintings rely on soft edges and a vibrant colour ground. Poonam is a part of Avenue Road Arts School's student community. Currently she is partaking in Martha Johnson's course (@highpinespainter ), Contemporary Painting, where students explore a range of techniques and approaches while exploring how to translate imagery into the student's unique artistic vision. I am a sponge for all Southern Ontario music, specifically anything from the late 70s-early 80s in Brantford, Hamilton, and Toronto. What came from that specific period in those specific areas was pure magic and critically important. During this time, Martha Johnson had her hands in some pretty key bands in the art/punk scene: Oh Those Pants!, the Doncasters, and of course Martha & the Muffins. One Hit Wonderful # 82 Echo Beach / Martha and the Muffins – No 7, 1980 In 1978 Mark Gane was working in a mundane role checking wallpaper for faults before it got sold. It gave him plenty of time to daydream about places he’d rather be. Echo Beach wasn’t a real place for Gane. He’d heard Ultravox’s (a later one hit wonder) song Hiroshima Mon Amour which also makes mention of an Echo Beach and that same sense of wishing to be back in another place in time, and he thought he’d use it too. Gane’s father told him, after Echo Beach became internationally successful, that the reason was because it was nostalgic; it makes people wistful for places and times past. But there are a great many wistful songs, including Gane’s Ultravox inspiration, which haven’t stood the test of time like Echo Beach has. The vocalist is Martha Johnson. She and Gane have been together for forty years. They still perform and last year released the album Marthology: In And Outtakes which includes a stripped back and darker version of Echo Beach. Another streak of three... Martha and the Muffins: Mystery Walk (1984) 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 ...like the three Talking Heads/Eno albums, like the first Wire albums. This is the third of the M+M/ Lanois streak. Before 'This Is The Ice Age', they weren't as good. Even if 'Echo Beach' was a nice and bouncy little new wave dance hit, it was a bit silly, and they had a reputation then for being a one hit wonder. I guess because their second album, 'Trance and Dance', was, sorry, pretty awful. Seems they needed Daniel Lanois to find their sound. 'Danseparc' was great too, and 'Mystery Walk' no less. Afterwards, without Lanois, they lost it again. I had this on vinyl back then, and lost it at some time, and then it wasn't available until 2016 (CD), and now I finally got me a copy again. It has two of my very favourites by this band. 'Come Out And Dance' is a funk monster. This time they really do sound like Talking Heads. The band at this point was only Martha and Mark plus Lanois plus guests, and here we have Yogi Horton on drums. If this doesn't make you move your ass you're dead. My all time favourite M+M tune is 'I Start To Stop'. It's one of those elegant art pop songs with interesting sounds and a beautiful melody, like what Eno and John Cale or Japan might come up with. We're afraid to call it love, let's call it Swimming Martha and the Muffins: This Is The Ice Age (1981) 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌕 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 Feel like doing a second one today, because my mention of this band in my previous post made me feel like putting on this album. Martha and the Muffins were a difficult case before this. I found their early stuff, even including the widely beloved 'Echo Beach' single, kinda silly, sometimes angular in a no good way and unpleasant. With this album, that changed. As if things had fallen into place, their sound changed from discordant to magical. Could have something to do with Daniel Lanois maybe. This is his debut as a producer. Guess he did it because his sister Jocelyne was a member of the band. Be it his influence or not, this and the next two albums 'Danseparc' and 'Mystery Walk' (on the same high level) play like a Brian-Eno version of new wave pop, but in a different way than Talking Heads. They don't worship funk to that extent. The songs are more in the vein of 70s art pop, like Eno's own mid 70s phase, 'Golden Hours' and the likes. 'Swimming' is the rare case of a single that's actually the standout track of an album. They used to play it in our rock disco back then, and I absolutely loved it. Great dance rhythm, and listen to that guitar. It sounds so avant-70s, it reminds me of times when Eno would mention in the album credits that a "snake guitar" was played. 'Casualties Of Glass' has a great outro (for once reminiscent of Talking Heads). 'Boy Without Filter' is a beautiful ballad.' 'Jets Seem Slower In London Skies' a lovely ambient piano piece in that Harold Budd/Eno vein. 'One Day In Paris' is so sweet and cute a ballad that some might find it kitschy. ECHO BEACH / MARTHA AND THE MUFFINS _ Dindisc 1980 7” Single _ Mark Gane came up with the initial idea for Martha And The Muffins’ most well known and only significant international hit whilst working at a job where he checked wallpaper for printing faults. Repeatedly performing a task he found extremely boring, his mind began to wander “far away in time” to a place he’d love to escape to - the titular (and fictional) beach. Various versions of the cover have been released, all featuring maps - giving the impression that the beach is a real place.
