Good morning !! I don’t think I’ve shown this part of my plot before. My allotment is half veggies and half cut flowers and I’m lucky enough to have a poly tunnel dedicated to each, this particular part was the old compost heap which I’ve dug out, removed incredible amount of historical rubbish, metal and even a bed frame ( baffles me) covered it up and now it’s a great patch for some of my veggies, the pumpkins love it. Yesterday's task was to sew up all the small holes in the scaffold netting that I use over my brassicas. I've seen butterflies simply fold their wings and walk through the holes to be greeted by the smorgasbord of all my brassicas ! I washed the netting first, then hung it to dry in my polytunnel, then bundled it up on a chair indoors. The next morning, a huge bumblebee was climbing the patio doors, trying to get out. Bumblebees fall asleep on the netting.I usually find them on the plot, snoring in the afternoon x Blue is their favourite colour 😍. So, a big shout out to all the cabbage whites planning on visiting my plot. I think I've foiled your cunning plan ! X In other news ...The morning was filled with birdsong and the heavy buzz of bumblebees, visiting primrose, Wallflower, and honeysuckle. The first lot of parsnips have been sown. I started chitting these a couple of weeks ago and hadn’t realised how much they had grown already! There were only about 8 seeds that didn’t germinate. These have been planted into an old wooden slab crate, which is full of a mixture of riddled compost and sharp sand. I chitted a few of my seeds last year and it made such a big difference that I’ve decided to do them all this year. Some serious graft on the allotment today. My husband Steve did an awesome job of digging trenches for planting potatoes and our son even helped with some weed pulling and bramble chopping. I decided, with the price of food rocketing and the fact that I can't even recognise half the ingredients printed on the jars on supermarket shelves, that I would try pressure canning. And use my homegrown ingredients to make my meals. I had this Presto 16 quart pressure canner imported from America via Amazon.com. as it was cheaper than trying to buy one in England. There are alternatives, but the reviews weren't good. I paid my money and waited. I was a bit worried just in case I had to pay anything extra at customs, as I don't know the rules and because of Brexit. And import rules being as clear as fog ! But I got an email and could track it as it cleared customs and arrived a day earlier than expected. The instruction booklet is clear, and it even has a few recipes. So I followed the instructions and fired her up 🤣 It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I can't wait to get started . Between this canner, water-bathing, my dehydrator, and my freezer. The peas have been evicted from the coldframe. They were desperate to go out, and I needed the room. I tend to grow them in guttering as they are so much easier to plant out. The root system mats together, and once loosened, you just slide them into a nice comfy channel of soil. Cosy ! These are Feltham First, Mangetout, and a few Sugar snaps. 😋 The guttering is ready for a refill. On a side note, I am trying to grow enough raspberries, so when I cut them back in late autumn, I can save them for pea sticks the following year. So I can go plastic free ! That would be great 👍 In the meantime, I'm using and re-using what I already have. Good luck, little peas !! I'm forever treating myself to things for the garden, but I think this is my favourite purchase this year. It's called a hori hori knife, and it's basically a trowel on steroids. One side is serated for cutting through roots and difficult weeds while the other side provides a blade for cutting and chopping. You can also use it for planting out using the depth gauge. We did a bit of plot planning and prep over the weekend. My lovely other half put some edging in for me, just makes it look a little tidier I feel. Tiny heads of Asparagus are starting to emerge. It's not my favourite vegetable, but I know it's good for me as it is rich in vitamin A, C, and K. Asparagus acts as a prebiotic and feeds the good bacteria in your gut. I've grown these from seed. 'Connovers Collosal' This is their third year, where I may be able to cut some. But I may leave them to establish their roots more, as have been moved several times. This is now their permanent bed. Hurrah ! The first sowing of aubergines and chillies are doing really well. These are currently in the house on the only decent windowsill that I have, that doesn’t have house plants on it. This year, I chitted all my seeds before sowing them, and it’s made a massive difference. As I sow them all into individual cells in a propagator, it’s nice knowing that I won’t be wasting growing space on a seed that won’t germinate. If you are unfamiliar with this process, it involves using a wet piece of kitchen roll in a sealable tub. You place your seeds on the kitchen roll and put the lid on, then leave somewhere warm. My rhubarb flower stalk reminds me of a broccoli head or a Sedum. I love to play the guessing game of what other plants are in my family ? Rhubarb is a hardy perennial in the Buckwheat family ! Well, I never knew that !! Rhubarb is classed as a vegetable but used like a fruit. It's a native of Asia and was introduced into England from Italy around 1620 by Sir Matthew Lister.
