Last Sunday at diffrakt, Ann Cotten was in conversation with Shinohara Masatake Beginning from the question as to how and why to start reading – and hence, often, translating – Japanese philosophy in the first place, both soon entered into a discussion of the thought of 西田 幾多郎 Nishida Kitarō, a philosopher-translator himself, all the while circling around notions such as 奥底 (okusoku), 場所 (basho) or 縁 (en) – among a swirl of others –, moving between ontology and epistemology, between architecture and ecology, between language and thought, translating, failing, translating again, failing better. The conversations continued well into the night, cut short only by the last train home. Thank you, Ann-san and Shinohara-san for making this happen, and, as always, to everyone who joined the conversation – we hope to see you again soon! @anysmallsky @yawu1116 #translation #philosophy #japanesephilosophy #nishidakitaro #depth #place #space #undecidedness #ecology #architecture #diffrakt

Philosopher Nishida Kitaro’s central argument revolves around the concept of “basho,” often translated as “a place”. Basho emphasizes the interconnectedness of the self and the world around us. Self-realization is obtained through direct experience and intuition in a specific location. I chose Kitaro’s path, Tetsugaku-no-Michi, to honor Japanese culture by wearing a yukata. It is a casual, lightweight kimono typically made of cotton or linen. Its fabric and innate freshness have transformed this garment into a symbol for the summer. I was fortunate to find Inoue Gofukuten and his hundred year-old vintage kimono store on Demachi Shopping Street. He pulled the most beautiful fabrics, some from the Meiji, Taisho and early Showa eras. However, I was taken aback by the arabesque skulls of the yukata I am wearing. Mr. Inoue is an expert kimono curator and his store a treasure hall you must visit. I approached basho as Mr. Inoue fitted me in his sanctuary, and later again as I saw myself tracing the footsteps of history next to Shirakawa River. • • • • • #nishidakitaro #bashophilosophy #selfrealization #directexperience #basho #tetsugakunomichi #yukata #japaneseculture #vintagekimono #inouegofukuten #demachishoppingstreet #kimonocurator #arabesqueskulls #kimonostore #shirakawariver #tracinghistory

According to Japanese poet, Matsuo Basho "every day is a journey, and the journey itself home" and walking the Tetsugaku-No-Michi , the Philosopher's Path, through Kyoto's Higashiyma district is like walking right into the heart of oneself, somehow... along the path, named after the Kyoto philosopher Nishida Kitaro, there are many shrines and gardens and, in this direction, going from South to North, the path ends near to the Ginkaku-ji temple, with its renowned Silver Pavillion, where even the crowds are unable to spoil the effect of being immersed in such beauty #philosopherswalkkyoto #tetsugakunomichi #everydayisajourney #traveltoarrivewithin #ginkakuji #ginkakujitemple #silverpavillion #japanesegardens #inajapanesegarden #walkingmeditation #matsuobasho #basho #japanesepoetry #nishidakitaro

An oasis of the mind, the Ishikawa Nishida Kitaro Museum located in Japan, is a three-story building dedicated to philosopher Nishida Kitaro. His work combined Western philosophy with Japanese Zen thought which, for a long time, led Japan’s philosophy movement. The museum was designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando. The inside of the building is like a labyrinth; one must enjoy this time to wander around and think. The building holds space for a public library with a collection of more than 9000 books. A basin shaped circular space with curved concrete walls, stretching toward the skylight, serves as a meditation space. You can see the blue sky cut-out in the shape of a circle in the ceiling. It also has two rooms allocated for workshops, as well as an Observation Lounge. This concrete structure stands atop a hill with a spectacular view of the magnificent Kahokugata Lagoon, the spiritual mountains of the Hakusan mountain range and the beaches along the Sea of Japan. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night, when for a split second you're completely lost. No sense of where and who you are, and lacking an understanding of how you are situated in relation to other things. This is a state that Japanese philosopher Nishida Kitaro calls "pure experience" in his 1911 publication, Inquiry into the Good, where he argues that pure experience is ontologically prior to the bifurcation of the self and object. In other words, this instantaneous moment in the middle of the night epitomizes this state of nothingness (mu) before ideas about the "self" (and the first person pronoun "I") and objects (such as chairs, walls, blankets, etc.) emerge. In this sense, his philosophy rejects Descartes' "I think therefore I am." Scholars have hotly debated whether Nishida's philosophy of unity and oneness facilitated the rise of Japanese ultranationalism in the years leading up to World War II. While some of his disciples did indeed incorporate his ideas in such a way, contextualizing Nishida within the culture of his time may unravel a different perception of him and his philosophy that would in fact reject such chauvinistic doctrines. #nishidakitaro #nishidakitarō #kyotoschool #philosophy #descartes #ontology #nothingness #mu #西田幾多郎 #inquiryintothegood #善の研究 #japanesephilosophy #japan #deconstruction #aesthetics #study #oxford #academia

Keiji Nishitani was a 20th century Buddhist philosopher who drew on both Zen traditions as well as Western philosophical and religious sources to inform his existential thinking. This impactful quote from the Japanese philosopher shows the importance of universal care and interdependence in his philosophical vision. Today, one of the greatest issues facing humanity is looming ecological collapse. Can we learn from these cross-cultural Buddhist thinkers how to better address this crisis and build flourishing, ecological civilizations? Jared Morningstar will be hosting a pop-up on this exact topic on April 27th. RSVP at Process & Faith if you'd like to participate in this discussion. . . . #welovejapan #meditartransforma #caminodelafilosofia #nishidakitaro #ginkakuji #equilibrio #vidasana #cuidate #cuidatupiel #skincare #skincarechile #cosmeticanatural #cosméticaeficaz #ingredientesnaturales #nutricionparatupiel #love #amorpropio #autocuidado #selflove #bekeisai

Nishida Kitarō is considered one of the greatest Japanese interpreters of Western philosophy of the 20th century. In this book by Robert E. Carter, Carter does a wonderful job of explaining how Nishida renders Zen Buddhist metaphysics into the language of Western philosophy. I particularly like Nishida’s concept of “pure experience” (reminds me of some of Merleau-Ponty’s ideas). There has been a long intellectual pollination between Japanese and European scholars particularly German scholars (there are currently 19 Japanese translations of Heidegger’s Sein Und Zeit, while in the West it was only a decade ago that the second English translation of “Being & Time” was published). In the 1920s, a group of Japanese scholars of Western philosophy from Kyoto University who also were Zen Buddhist practitioners went to Germany to study with the neo-Kantians of the day. While in Germany they also came into contact with Heidegger through his lectures prior to his writing of Sein & Zeit (Being & Time). It has been suggested that these Japanese scholars may have greatly informed Heidegger’s writing of his masterpiece. What we do know is that they returned to Japan as Heideggarians! Among the scholars of the Kyoto School was D. T. Suzuki whose lectures in the early 1950s at Columbia University introduced Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac & other Beats to Zen. After WWII, The University of Hawaii became home to many Kyoto School scholars with the East/West Center opening in 1955. At its opening, Heidegger gave the commencement lecture. Nishida Kitarō’s masterwork is “An Inquiry Into The Good, ” in which he suggests that Nothingness (Emptiness) can ground an ethical system. As the great Tibetan yogi, Milarepa said, “Emptiness engenders compassion,” by which I take him to mean that in my emptiness I am filled with the Other! The very basis of an ethics based on empathetic response. tinyurl.com/mzd8hhz3
