A glorious sunny day for Mary's first Munro on Saturday. We chose Beinn Ghlas as a gentle introduction to hillwalking and Munros. A lovely walk through regenerated woodland, then out onto the open hillside as the views start to open up over Loch Tay. We watched the showers all around us, over Glencoe, Crianlarich, and south of us but we remained dry. Here is a walk I completed a couple of weeks ago on a trip to our lovely Yorkshire coast. It is a short 4 mile walk, along the clifftops just north of Scarborough. The winds were fierce by the sea but quickly disappeared a few metres inland, or so it seemed. The weather didn't quite know what to do, varying from sunshine to cloud, thankfully, there were no showers. Starting at the car park marked on the map, a muddy path led quickly to the clifftops and almost as quickly to a distinctive white wooden building. This turned out to be Long Nab Coastguard Station and Mine Shelter. It was built in 1939 and was important during WW2 as a lookout for enemy mines and torpedoes. Today it is a bird observatory but it wasn't open. The clifftop path is a part of the #clevelandway, I've done stretches of it previously, but not along here. This tiny section had the usual glorious views of sea, sky and cliffs backed by fields. The hedgerows and gorse were coming into blossom. The second half of the route (just an evening walk) was along lanes and a cinder track that follows the line of the old railway, I forgot to take some snapshots along here. This goes all the way to Whitby and I've done other stretches of this too. Back along a quiet road to the car where Scarborough Castle topped the cliffs. I'd visited this earlier in the day, there were fabulous views from there too! I think the forecast for the weekend is good. There were blue skies for this recent walk but it was blowing a hoolie and although only 7.5 miles some of that was against a strong headwind, it was hard work! I've done a couple of walks on the far side of Otley. Quite apart from stunning views in all directions, it avoids the crowds on Otley Chevin on the other side of town which is very popular. There is a small lay-by off the B6451 towards Clifton where this walk begins. I've circled the location in blue. The os app has changed and no longer shows the start/end point in this view. It didn't start well, the first field was mega muddy but once across and reaching tracks the walk was relatively dry underfoot, there were challenging muddy stretches but that's normal these days! The first treat to the eyes were views of Lindley reservoir with Almscliffe Crag in the distance. Then Scargill reservoir came into view with the golf balls at RAF Menwith Hill dotting the skyline. The ruins of Dob Park Lodge, was passed, this was built in the 1600s by Sir Mauger Vavasour, a hunting lodge, to entertain his friends. Turner featured the ruin in one of his paintings. Further on a wind turbine was taking advantage of the weather. No doubt adding enough energy to the national grid to power all the local farms! The only way I could put together this route was to have a short stretch on a main road, but that was soon out of the way, before crossing the moor and going around several farms for the home leg. It was a rare sunny day for this fabulous 9.5 mile walk from Hawnby. It wasn't that far from the popular Sutton Bank and White Horse of Kilburn, but the tiny village nestled in a secluded valley, was hidden from the crowds. Although there was a handy lay-by for walkers and cyclists it was a world apart from the nearby tourist hubs. A slow steady climb from the village through fields was fine underfoot, possibly because the paths weren't too well walked. The splendid Arden Hall was reached to the sound of barking dogs excited by the sight of a rare visitor. (They were in a pound so nothing to worry about). I was rather taken by the Yew topiary, I bet the gardens there are worth seeing. The valley up provided shelter from the wind and a good stop for an early lunch before reaching the top. It was quite warm in the sun. A brief stretch of the Cleveland Way and the fabulous views into the Vale of York below, then across the moors before descending to Hawnby through open farmland (with some mud, can't get away from it!). There were also a few old lime kilns scattered about beside the paths and tracks. On return it was rather disappointing that the teashop wasn't open (especially as I'd lengthened my route to go there) but the pub provided a welcome cuppa all the same. Spotted a #osbenchmark on the wall on the way into the village too, that's always a bonus. I hope the rain holds off enough for some Easter walks. Enjoy your bank holiday whatever you are doing. Extreme biking . . . As we walked up Ben Ìme, we spotted someone ahead, carrying what appeared to be a mountain bike over their shoulders. Not carrying anything like the same in weight, we did gain on the walking biker but finally met at the top, where he was preparing for his real purpose, the downhill ride. While I was quite pleased just to walk up to the summit, descending on a bike takes being out in the mountains to a completely different level, one that I can only imagine is nail-bitingly scary! Arrochar Alps pano . . . Earlier this week I was lucky enough to coincide a trip to Scotland and the Arrochar Alps with two days of amazingly good walking weather. On the first we had a plan to walk up The Cobbler (aka Ben Arthur) via the scrambly south approach. Fortunately, despite facing into really strong winds at the summit, these quickly eased off, giving us every reason to continue on to Beinn Ìme, the highest peak in the Arrochar Alps. Nearing the summit, we stopped to admire the view looking north, and the four shots in this post show the wonderful panorama, with views over to the conical-shape of Ben Lomond in the distance, the ridge leading to Beinn Narnain and finally the rock ridged-top of The Cobbler. Last weekend after the fabulous workshop @coachandhorseshg1 with the amazing @helenjamesflowers featured in my last post I made the most of my trip to Harrogate with a short walk to Harlow Carr. This is a walk I've done before using the 36 bus from Leeds. It can be done directly from The Coach and Horses, bus stop nearby, or as we did from a little further up the A61 at The Hydro where there is also a bus stop. Essentially, the route follows a part of the 20 mile Harrogate Ringway and returns through Valley Gardens. We used my rhs membership to pop into @@rhsharlowcarr half way around. The weather was a bit iffy and after the very wet winter this year the footpath through the woods to Birk Crag wasn't great and in parts in need of repair. The views through the trees at the Crag were clear, that wouldn't be the case in the summer. Harlow Carr is splendid as usual and a tea and Fat Rascal very welcome in the gardens. Returning through woodland to the beautiful park built for the visitors who came to take the spa waters, we passed one of the watering holes, Magnesia Well, which is now a cafe. On leaving the gardens we passed the Royal Pump Room, but I forgot to take a photo there. We could have popped back to the pub on the way back but time was pressing. A pleasant end to the day! This is the first largely mud free walk I've done for a long time. There was the odd patch, but nothing like what I've been wading through recently. The circuit from Burley-in-Wharfedale followed mainly tracks up on to Burley Moor and the paths weren't too bad on the tops. It wasn't a particularly bright day and views were limited except for the odd time when the sun got out for a while . Through the haze it was possible to see Almscliffe Cragg and Otley Chevin in the distance. Burley and Otley could also be made out. This a route I'd like to repeat on a clear day. I think you'll be able to see for miles. On the tops were a number of boundary stones. The first overlooking Carr Bottom Reservoir in my first photo was very difficult to decipher, but I assume the 'H' is for Hawksworth as the moor of that name was on that side. I didn't look at the other side to see if there was a 'B' for Burley or 'M' for Menston! I did make a mistake on the way back and took the wrong track, it wasn't a big deal because another alternative could be taken. Anyway, I've highlighted the intended route at the map at the end. The route I ended up taking was through fields and not on tracks and so probably a little muddier than the planned option, as it was little used, it wasn't too bad. Big one for the scrap book🐾🏁🖤 even if you don't read my essay swipe to the video and enjoy me shouting like a loon and the cutest family finish line if I do say so myself 🥹 Never thought we'd see the day...and we almost didn't when within 45 minutes of arriving at the venue yesterday we got the news that our race had been cancelled 🙃 luckily we'd made plans to meet up friends so pivoted plans for the morning and afternoon finding things to see and do and a pub to stop over at for the evening 🙌🏻 Peggy and I then took part in our first race together this morning and she was impeccable. Given it's probably one of the busiest environments she's ever been in she took it all in her stride, when lining up for the individual start she sat nicely and had fusses and gave me kisses, which I think helped both our nerves. She was unsure off the start line and made a quick dart for the camera man who was crouched to the side 🙈 but other than that she was pretty consistently out in front, not a full on pull the whole time as we didn't have much company for the majority but we passed a few runners and were passed once and she didn't twitch or turn to check anything. This is a walk I've had on the to-do list for a while mainly because I wanted to see the remains of Jonn O Gaunt's castle. The castle is in fact a hunting lodge to the wealthy John O'Gaunt (1340-1399) who was the Duke of Lancaster and father of Henry IV, it came towards the end of the walk which was interesting, varied and well worth doing. After leaving Swinsty Reservoir and passing through a forestry plantation on indistinct paths to a trig point and the Hunter's Stones, a clear track to Little Almscliffe (featured in several of my walks) provided a good spot for lunch. The golf balls at Menwith Hill became clearer on the horizon as did the wind turbines at Kettlesing Head on the approach to Scargill reservoir, the tracks were clear and easy on this stretch . Beaver Dyke reservoir proved empty and has been for a while judging by the established vegetation, but John O'Gaunt reservoir was full. The castle is on private land and rather controversially, because it used to be accessible, could only be viewed from the footpath. Not a lot to be seen it has to be said, but worth it all the same. The walk back to the car park first took a path that seemed to be the remains of the approach to the castle and then crossed boggy ground before a short lakeside walk. An easy 8.5 route. Professional pictures from Sunday...well the 4 I narrowed it down to 😅❤️ god damn love these dogs. I realise I've said it a few years in a row now but I really haven't expected to still be doing racing like this with them so each time we get moments like these captured it both makes me and breaks me 🥹 this unexpected duo of rescue dogs have taught me so much and are the best little team. As mentioned, Baxter has a new found love for running (I think it's the Peggy influence), whereas in a race, Gigi isn't as interested to pull out hard for the duration. The Queen on Crook Hill 👑 Not the Peaky adventure we planned as the weather came in and the top of the moors was an un runnable bog so we called it, so near yet so far from our second Ethel of the day to turn back. I must share with you this fascinating walk taken last weekend in the snow. I'd seen a post by @pixleyclarkehill about Leyburn Shawl. It looked a good walk with great views over Wensleydale towards Pen Hill and I wanted to take a closer look. Now the Shawl itself is a famous local beauty spot, justifiably so. It is said that Mary Queen of Scots escaped from the nearby Bolton Castle and dropped her shawl along the way. More likely it is a Norse word for shelter. However, a fascinating part of the walk arose when stopping for lunch in Gillfield Wood, I was intrigued by all the evidence of previous construction, not only the moss covered remains of buildings, but also channels carrying water and what seemed like a tunnel. It turns out they are the remains of a smelting mill and the tunnel was a part of a condenser flue leading North from a nearby condenser house. The flue extended for two miles taking the toxic fumes away from the valley sides. The industrial history of the Dales belies its peaceful image, the hills above were lead mines, they definitely need exploration on another day. Moving on from there past Bolton Hall (the Bolton Estate is everywhere around here) to Wensley waterfall in full flow, it is worth checking out behind the pub and next to the candle shop. This was followed by a bit of a trudge through soggy fields to a welcome tea shop in the town square. Perfect! Have a good Sunday and thanks Pixley for the heads up on this great day out. It has been a long time since I've been up Simon's Seat but a frosty morning set the scene for a fabulous walk around this classic circuit. The early start was essential to get one of the few parking places at Barden Bridge. Parking is limited around here, or very expensive in the car parks serving the Devonshire estate. A morning mist was rising from the Wharfe and the stark structures of winter stems still fringed with ice, lined the path at the start. The walk along the river is familiar, with views(not shown) down to #thestrid possible through leafless trees. The climb up through the Valley of Desolation to the Seat, much changed since my last visit; a whole plantation had been cleared leaving very different views. From the rocky summit views down to Grassington were fabulous in the clear winter light . The gradual descent down a mossy lane led back to an easy stroll along the river bank and back to the bridge. Coverdale is a Dale of few walkers and many friendly locals. Starting at Carlton in Coverdale and taking a quiet road which eventually became a track heading up the Dale, I missed the path. The plus side of this mistake was seeing a hare bound ahead and meeting a farmer mending a bridge across the stream, “It will save me having to go all the way down and back up again”, he said. It was only after this conversation I realised my mistake, but it was either an uphill to retrace steps or down and back up, the latter was less embarrassing! I redeemed myself when crossing the moor between Fleensop and Horsehouse. This is clearly an area rarely walked; the bridleway, consumed by bog and sedge, was nowhere to be seen. Field walls provided good navigation to a very rough path through High Gill to Horsehouse with a bench in the centre of the village for lunch. A local was roughly pruning shrubs in a garden nearby, his commentary on the proceedings added garnish to the sarnies. It seems this was to allow a neighbouring holiday cottage a view! He said there are only about half a dozen occupied houses in the village, the rest for visitors, the impact of tourism on local communities. To gain time lost a planned section along the riverbank was ignored and the road used. The last section through fields back to Carlton must have the tightest squeeze stiles in Yorkshire. No tightly sprung gate needed, a sheep would never get through these, I had to take my rucksack off! A short section called Turnbeck Lane was clearly the remains of an old road, today going to and from nowhere! Taking advantage of a good weather forecast last Sunday, I headed to the Lakes for a walk with @tovaah.uk . We didn’t really expect snow, but as we started our climb up through Stickle Ghyll, the snow began to fall. Strangely, the Langdales seemed to be in their own snowy microclimate as, on the top of the pikes, we could see to other Lakeland fells that didn’t have any snow at all.
