4/26/24: my last post for awhile I promise! My last day was mixed emotions for me. I was excited to get home to my pups and family, but this was the first trip I truly didn’t want the hiking to end! I already can’t wait to go back and embrace being a dirt-napping, lizard-lounging, tree-hugging hikertrash again soon! I got to hug the Keffer Oak which is the largest and oldest oak tree on the entire trail. The morning was a really fun rock scramble on Sinking Creek Mountain with amazing views of green on green. The afternoon was a walk through a portion of the trail that had just reopened after a wildfire closure. It was eerie and sad to see the devastation. I didn’t film the worst because it was still smoldering and the fire crews were still out working to clear downed trees. I had to skip a few miles for a small section that was still closed. The day ended with some trail magic, and I reflected on how much had happened in the last two weeks. I can’t believe the miles I covered and all the beauty I saw, but I was really impressed (as always) at the people and the entire hiking community. 4/23/24: AT section hike day 11- this ended up being kind of. “Nero” day which is when you only spend a short part of the day hiking. My feet were still recovering from the rocks, and I wanted to spend some time with Jason while he was in town. He dropped me off early at the trailhead so it was just me and the deer on trail for the morning. I had amazing views of Pearisburg from the Pearis ledges and Angel’s Rest rock. I was finished by noon and relaxed with Jason the rest of the day. I travelled about 50,000 steps through the Grand Canyon on Saturday. We hiked Rim to River - down South Kaibab, stopped for lunch in Phantom Ranch, then back up Bright Angel. We couldn’t have planned for better weather. It snowed the day before and was partly cloudy and overcast during our entire hike. My last pic is a video of the snowstorm I drove up in Friday afternoon. Oggi abbiamo dovuto annullare alcune escursioni al #villaggiobizantino a causa del vento forte che rendeva rischioso addentrarsi nel bosco e "dirottarne" altre alla Necropoli di Realmese. Luogo altrettanto straordinario, luogo di silenzi, luogo che è uno dei simboli delle dinamiche insediative di questo territorio nel passato. Abbiamo camminato su un'antica trazzera, tra tombe a grotticella che si aprono su una grande parete di bianca roccia calcarea, orchidee e colori di primavera, con lo stupore di chi le ha scoperte per la prima volta e l'amarezza, soprattutto nostra, nel constatare ancora la presenza costante di rifiuti nel parcheggio e altre problematiche che questo luogo dell'anima non meriterebbe di subire. Andre had the day off yesterday, so naturally, we all hit the trails together! It was a great hike, until we encountered two sets of off-leash dogs. Decided to go for a quick training hike up the beautiful Table Mountain. By quick I mean 17.74 miles with 4,321ft in elevation gain. 4/22/24: AT section hike day 10- the BEST zero day ever! While Jason is in town, we are staying in town, and I discovered that just up the road was Mountain Lake Lodge which is where Dirty Dancing was filmed! I’ve always wanted to visit this place and never knew it was only 5 miles from the trail. A zero day in hiking is a rest day where zero miles are hiked. So instead I went on a self-guided tour of the lodge and saw so many sites of one of my favorite movies of all time! There’s a saying on trail, “the trail provides”. 4/21/24: At section hike day 9- Jason came out to hike with me for a day so we decided to flip up a few miles north on trail so he could see the infamous Mcafee Knob and Tinker Cliffs. It felt so surreal to be standing in this place. It is possibly the most photographed place on the trail, and it made me realize how far I have really come on this journey. The emotion hit me all at once to be honest, and I was really glad to have my hiking partner by my side ❤️ To be fair, my feet were killing me from all of the rocks, and I was physically exhausted from so many days of hiking in a row that I’m sure that contributed to the emotions. 4/20/24: AT section hike day 8: I had a great breakfast at Weary Feet, and Julie even made extra pancakes so I packaged them up in ziplocks and passed them out on trail to other hikers. I soaked my feet in Dismal Falls and had a relaxing day of hiking ending at Sugar Run Gap. I walked down to Woods Hole hostel, which is a legendary AT hostel experience. Jason came to town to meet me so I waited at the hostel and enjoyed the porch and the views. Jason picked me up, and I had the weird sensation of traveling so fast in a vehicle after having only traveled at a walking pace for over a week. 4/19/24: AT section hike day 7: the morning of the grouse! Caretaker Bill had told me the previous night about a grouse that always came to visit him when he came up to the shelter, and sure enough she came to visit me in the evening and then again the next morning. She was very interested in my food and watched closely as I packed up for the day. It rained most of the morning, which really made the forest come alive. I passed the 600 mile marker and decided to head to Weary Feet Hostel for the night. What an amazing place to stay. I immediately soaked my feet in the creek on-site and then took the hottest shower of my life! Julie and her team made an amazing dinner for all of the hikers complete with homemade cakes for dessert. I got to catch up with a lot of hikers I saw in Marion, and we stayed up chatting far too long before I retired to my bunk for the night. This is our hike to the Jacob Hamblin Arch in Coyote Gulch. We drove about 35-40 miles down Hole in the Rock road to 41 mile ridge road and finally to the water tanks parking lot. I’m super proud of my lady being able to both slide down and Spider-Man crawl out of this canyon with me. If you’re down for this adventure, I urge you to bring a rope. It’ll make the hike much easier for all in your group. This is a must see! From the water tanks, it’s a 2 mile hike to the arch. Only other trail to this is from Hurricane Wash that my brother I did a few years back. That’s 7.5 miles each way. 4/18/24: AT section hike day 6: this was an easy day for me, I knew I wanted to take it easy after the marathon day before so I had no real plans for the day. I took a lot of breaks and stopped for a really nutrient dense meal at the Brushy Mountain Outpost of grilled cheese and corn dogs. Another couple of hikers found me napping on a picnic table in the sun and decided my new trail name is Lizard! I accept! I headed for Helvey Mill shelter area to grab water, but the sunshine and the surrounding pine forest were just too nice to pass up. I set up camp and lounged away the rest of the day. In the evening, Bill, a caretaker for the shelter area came up and told me all sorts of history of the area including the eminent domain conflicts between the trail and the locals and how to identify American chestnut trees by their leaves. I would have loved to see this waterfall frozen, but I decided to play it safe due to avalanche danger in the area. This is one of my favourite fall trails with breathtaking views! The hike is called Giant Steps, and you can see why. 😀 This is not a beginner hike as it is a long hike.
