The children enjoyed being able to fill up their their pots with soil and pop a few sunflowers seeds in. Last Thursday saw the final Good Food Inspirers course with this incredible bunch. We spent the last session at the wonderful Lancashire Wildlife Trust’s Witton Park Greenhouses project to celebrate Soil Association Food for Life first #MyFoodCommunity place-based pilot in Blackburn with Darwen. A day of dreaming, laughter, community, action to create the world we want. It included a tour and #PlantAndShare activities with Andy Mather, incredible food from Dinner at Marias, a foraging walk with Sarah Dickson from Pendle Plant Craft (Free foraging and well-being walks), frogs, a Totoro chair, and a deeper relationship with the wonderful Sustainable Food Places Blackburn with Darwen Food Alliance. Angus and his family moved from Hong Kong to the UK in 2021. He describes how community growing projects and open, cross-cultural dialogue about food culture can be key to “discovering a new way of life”. Angus is one of the 120,000 people to have moved to the UK from Hong Kong since 2021. Of those that have moved, many feel welcomed and 99% plan to stay permanently. New research has shown that despite relatively high levels of social contact, some still feel isolated. For Angus, the move to Bristol was initially disorientating and he tries describing an “abstract” feeling linked to a lacking sense of place., “I think for most new migrants, there is a feeling of having no memory [associated with a place], and there is isolation.” Angus is thoughtful and astute, and our conversation is peppered with micro-observations that illuminate the social significance of food for new migrant communities. As part of The National Lottery 'Plant and Share' project, the Food Hub at Llanhilleth Institute hosted a 'Grow Your Own' session. Ten local families, along with ten young people from the Clwb Llan Youth Club, planted 'tumbling tomatoes' in seed trays and went home with hanging baskets ready to transplant them in six weeks' time, so they can watch them grow and enjoy sweet, juicy tomatoes fresh from the vine in the summer🍅🍅🍅.
