The original Variegated Rocoto cuttings from originally 2022 are growing very slow. I wonder if they think they've done their job and given me seeds so gone into retirement. Still flowering, I find this when taking cuttings from flowering plants. 1st chance they flower like mad. The first batch of Variegated Rocotos were very disappointing, it seemed they lost their Variegation as they got bigger. Nice surprise today a new Variegated leaf on the largest / oldest seedling (2nd photo). The newer seedlings are showing a lot better Variegation throughout. They are just very small, probably very late pods if any. Looks like I've kept a nice one for Kratky / DWC later. Previously I had mentioned earlier in my Creating a DIY Vegetable Garden Out Of Lawn Space gardening blog post, info about how we've recently been starting veggie plants indoors from food scraps. Upon learning how the last Wed. in April is National Stop Food Waste Day @stopfoodwasteday #nationalstopfoodwasteday @nationaldaycal (+ the month of Earth Day) - I was inspired to share this idea about how easy (+economical) gardening veggies grown entirely for free from food (ideally organic) scraps can be! On our very tiny kitchen windowsill, I am using several of my fave jars from one of my fave local women-owned businesses - Orasalla Cherry @orasellacherry that just happen to be the perfect size for repurposing to fit & hold mini gardens (shown growing green onions & romaine lettuce) all from recycling veggies scraps into veggie plant starts! This little garden is so easy to start w/the bottoms of produce cut off & placed into jars of water. From both the onion bulbs & lettuce heads, I left abt 2" of height & w/in 1 day green onions started shooting up new growth/& in a few days, the lettuce was doing the same - ready for planting shortly after. + speaking of saving $$$ & esp. the planet at the same time I'm happy to share info abt another one of my fave women-owned businesses/on-line grocery store Martie @martiefoods where their company strives to fight food waste (you've prob seen many of their products in my food blog posts). The playmobile farmers feel that everything is a month behind- especially as Monty said is was time to sow sweetcorn already. There's still all the squashes and brassicas to get in yet yet. Normally the tomatoes, peppers and aubergines would be twice this size by now. A combination of poor seed compost, rubbish peat pots (a womble last year) and maybe a bit of inattentiveness. DIY mini greenhouse. Essential for me to get my plants outdoors earlier. Added a greenhouse window opener to open the roof when it gets too hot whilst I'm at work. Today I ran a workshop for @prideinluton teaching everyone how to grow delicious food on your windowsill whilst using ‘rubbish’ as planters. Tin cans were decorated to create beautiful herb gardens and ‘micro cherry’ tomatoes were sown ready to be potted on later into recycled yoghurt pots. If you don’t have an outside growing space it’s well worth giving indoor gardening a go. All you need is a sunny windowsill, a recycled planter, some compost, seeds and water and you can create your own little indoor garden for the spring / summer.
