This week's 'Social Sale' celebrates the singular beauty of a flower.... Recently, we highlighted the Itoh Peony as a plant that produces some of the most exquisite blossoms, each one distinct and remarkable. These hybrids, a cross between herbaceous and tree peonies, conclude the peony season with stunning flowers, then remain as a delightful shrub-like plant before dying back to the ground each winter. These are must-have garden staples and this Saturday & Sunday only, you can save $10.00 when you come grab one of your own :) #socialsale #itohpeonies #plantwhatyoulove #brockportgardencenter

The garden Itohs are starting to bloom! This peony cross deserves a space. They have so much to offer: lovely flowers and beautiful foliage. Wonderful! Itoh peonies originated by crossing herbaceous peonies and tree peonies, and they combine the best features of each. While they have the mounded growth habit of herbaceous peonies and die back to the ground in winter, they also produce immense flowers like tree peonies and NO FLOPPING :D Easy to grow in full sun or light shade and will perform well in average soil...now I know everyone wants the names, um, let's see...Copper Kettle, Hillary, Going Bananas, Scarlet Heaven and Purple Sensation oh, and pssst, this is an early social sale hint for this weekend ;) #itohpeony #plantwhatyoulove #brockportgardencenter

This weekend's 'Social Sale' is supposed to appeal to the impatient and seasonally impulsive side of all gardeners ;) We have plant packs and 4" pots of annual flowers, but sometimes you just want something more significant to put into that big porch container. So why not go for the 8" hanging basket! Just pop two or three of them out of the basket and into your lovely container, and presto, it's done! This Saturday & Sunday only, let the impetuous side win....all 8" baskets of ready-to-go color are only $9.99 :) #socialsale #plantwhatyoulove #instantgratification #brockportgardencenter

I went outside to take a photo of the decimated rose, its leaves absolutely devoured. I kept finding beautiful flowers I wanted to photograph, and I realized again that I get to choose what I focus on. Where attention goes, energy flows. There's a lot of beauty and good in the world, and I can choose to focus on that rather than on what's wrong. It's not toxic positivity. It's putting things in perspective and recognizing there's beauty and love even while not all things are beautiful and lovely. (For those of you who are worried, I bought Neem oil for the rose. Fingers crossed.) #plantwhatyoulove

We still have a couple of plots left! We have a lot of interest in our Plot Farmer program, but it is of course a time commitment. 🌿💚🌿 How does the pogram work? We provide the bed space, compost, straw, water, wood chips, necessary shovels and other tools. You prepare, plant and maintain the plot and in return provide 2 hours per week of volunteer time. 👬👫👬 If you are interested, you would meet Tom at the garden to see and select a plot. You can plant veggies, flowers or herbs (examples). 🌱🌸🌿 This is a gardening community! We have families with kids and gardeners of all ages. While you would be responsible for your plot, there is help at times. If you are new to gardening, we will help you. Last season the Plot Farmers started holding dinners at the farm, not mandatory, but so much fun. The first one will be this Saturday, May 11th, 5 pm. If you are interested reach out to Tom Milano at 313-434-5121 or [email protected]. #plotfarmers #gardeningcommunity #plantwhatyoulove

Do you have a memory tree? You know, a tree you remember as a kid that you loved for maybe other reasons than landscape value, but nonetheless, it left an impression? Mine is the Catalpa tree. It turns out that its beautiful, orchid-reminiscent flowers are still the reason we love it today! Catalpa is such a distinctive feature in the landscape, known for its large heart-shaped leaves and showy white flowers...(um, do we have to mention that the big bean seed pods annoy some?) These deciduous trees can reach heights of 40-60 feet and thrive in various soil conditions. They are valued for their dense foliage, which provides excellent shade and habitat for wildlife, including being the sole host for the catalpa sphinx moth. Which we're jumping right into here...the tree is lovely if you have space for one, and the moth thing is pretty sweet too...and if you're a fisherman, you need one of these ;) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceratomia_catalpae #catalpatrees #plantwhatyoulove #nativetrees #catalpasphinxmoth #brockportgardencenter

Some old fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat! This afternoon was spent on outside projects, planting a new garden bed, getting my summer plant wall ready, and cleaning off the potting bench for the season ahead. The birds are chirping, the sunshine is lingering a little longer each day… spring (and even a taste of summer) is in the air 🌼🪴🌸 Also, the fact that I got a bunch of my planting done today pretty much guarantees we’ll have one more cold snap 🤣. Our annual planting of Menton tulip bulbs and CA native baby blue eyes is inspired by a visit our client made to the historic Filoli gardens in nearby Woodside years ago. We’ve been recreating this classic planting on our client’s front terrace in Hillsborough for years now and have to say it’s sort of a ritual at this point, with the resulting show of blooms being one of the spring things we look forward to most each year! These bulbs and starts went into the ground about three weeks ago and should be blooming by April. It’s gonna be gorgeous when the magic happens, so trust we’ll share pics later this spring!! 💗💗💗 📷 by @jessicacomerford #winterrituals #springthings #growflowers #inthegarden #plantwhatyoulove

A winter container can be so beautiful! In our WNY land of lake effect snow, it's hit and miss in any given year how much extra enjoyment can be had from this effort...this season, though, has been pretty satisfying so far :) Planted this past early October with all hardy material, then all can be planted in the spring in a 'forever' home in the garden, and it then frees up your container for the next season. We say gamble on it; it's worth it! #wnyliving #plantwhatyoulove #brockportgardencenter

This week we are reminding you of the beacon in our white garden's east end.... These days, it screams at you from afar while you're in the nursery proper, "Look at me, LOOK AT ME!" In June, it's more of a whisper, but you'll hear it :) Stewartia pseudocamellia is one to start the wish list for the 2024 planting season. This is happily planted with Carex and Geranium sanguineum Album at her feet and Whirlwind Anemone by her side, a lovely white tree peony offers late spring company too. A seedling from our 35+ year old Bloodgood Japanese Maple! Over the years we have heard stories from you of the little maple seedlings from various Japanese Maples, sometimes even in a negative tone, like soooo many that it's not such a happy thing. We never have had that issue....it's pretty rare that one shows itself in our garden beds...and while we might be weeding genies here each spring, we don't think that's the reason ;) Well, we love this little guy, he was green all summer and then graced us with this lovely fall color....feels like a keeper, he'll land in the garden somewhere! #fallisfantastic #plantwhatyoulove #brockportgardencenter

There's still some time to plant! We mentioned this one earlier in the season; it was on our 'must get in the ground' list for this fall....well it's in, and this a.m. walk reminded us how much we love it! We're going to encourage you one last time on Wegelia Midnight Sun. The color it brings to this little green-filled foliage block of garden space is indispensable. And since it carries this color all season, it will be a lovely 'color echo' to its perennial plant neighbors; a gorgeous tree peony who flowers in the same hues and that amazing Astrantia we chatted on a few weeks ago. It picks up the fall color tinge on the Golden Shadows dogwood overhead for this season, and if you add in our tried and true chartreusey lady's mantle....we have high hopes it will be a lovely, low-maintenance, all-season grouping :) (It's in stock if you're feeling the pull) #plantwhatyoulove #rightplantrightplace #colorechos #brockportgardencenter

Birches should always be considered when planting and scheming for new garden spaces..... Their branches of intricately delicate stems of diminutive leaves and spring catkins begging the finches and chickadees to feed on the dust-like seed. The whole family of cultivars has just so much to love. North Dakota State University introduced a variety called Dakota Pinnacle. The bark of this tree evolves from grey-orange to orange-white, and finally, on mature trunks, white-yellow with slightly exfoliating bark. The shape of this one is columnar to pyramidal, the leaves are dark green, and Autumn brings out a brilliant yellow that lasts until frost. This hardy zone 3-7 birch is birch borer resistant and withstands wind; and how could a North Dakota introduction not withstand wind :) It has a medium to fast growth rate, reaching 35' tall and 10-12' wide at maturity. It is adaptable to dry or moist soil types, indifferent to soil pH, and urban or rural conditions, making it an excellent selection for smaller space-limited locations. It excels in full sun but also tolerates partial shade. Because of this adaptability, the Dakota Pinnacle would make a striking specimen nearly anywhere, from specimen to screenings, hedges, groves.... You can underplant with a low grass-like prairie dropseed or blue fescue and certainly underplant with a mix of spring bulbs...you have to imagine the base of these trees blanketed with blue squill at their feet, perfect! Look at that, you're all done :) #birchdakotapinnacle #plantwhatyoulove #rightplantrightplace #fallisforplanting #brockportgardencenter

Idk, 'some' have called this the ugliest tree in the nursery! All awkward and miss-shapen, coarse, weird droop-like look to the leaves, 'some'-one likened it to a peach tree with peach leaf curl disease, except it has multiple stems, and oh yeah, that 'unappealing' peeling bark...hahaha, it's so hard to convince folks when they're looking for a suburban size tree that flowers while you're showing them this gawky specimen.... all you can hear in your head are 'some'-one's negative phrases ringing in the brain! You just have to look to the future with some plants in a nursery setting, the potential (and we didn't even mention the lovely fragrance or the secret pink surprise)....good things come to those who wait :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heptacodium #heptacodium #sevensonstree #plantwhatyoulove #loveyourgarden #fallisforplanting #brocportgardencenter

This Thursday's plant love push is about the weather.....with the consistency of rain lately, you might be finding spaces in the landscape around you,...well, pooling water. These areas just might be a space to consider creating your own rain garden habitat!! The Atlantic White Cedar, or Chamaecyparis thyoides, is a native conifer found at the edges of bogs, marshes, and swamps. It is tolerant of short bursts of standing water and of brief periods of drought but prefers consistently moist soils. In their native habitats, the species tend to create stands on berms where standing water may pool nearby. NY Natural Heritage Program lists this as rare in NYS, a threatened species with a ranking of S2 with typically only 6-20 populations remaining. It's slow growing, at 3" per year with a deep moss-green mature foliage and blue-green young foliage, and small cones like you might find on an Arborvitae or Juniper. Top Point also displays a Plum-Red/Bronze winter color. It is tolerant of full sun or part shade. Because of its tight habit and slow growth rate, this might be an exceptional choice as a well-watered container specimen, or if planted in the garden, try pairing it with perennial Purple Flame iris or Dark Side of the Moon Astilbe. In a container for winter, you can add red twig dogwood stems for seasonal interest....in the garden, or in a container; we love this little guy :) #americanbeautiesnativeplants #plantwhatyoulove #brockportgardencenter
